Journal Reporter Faces Charge Of Battery By ABQjournal staff Tuesday, 03 November 2009 00:20
An Albuquerque Journal sports reporter is facing a battery charge after allegedly shoving another journalist while in the Rio Rancho High School press box following a high school football game, according to court records.
James Yodice, 42, was charged last week in Bernalillo Magistrate Court with battery, a petty misdemeanor. Yodice, who has worked at the Journal since 1998, covers high school sports.
According to a criminal complaint, heated words were exchanged and a physical altercation occurred between Yodice and online journalist Eric Maddy after the Clovis-Rio Rancho football game on Sept. 25. Rio Rancho High athletic director Vince Metzgar entered the room during the altercation and pulled Yodice off of Maddy, according to the complaint.
Rio Rancho police were dispatched to the press box following the incident; they said Maddy had a welt and swelling on the right side of his head.
“While there are different versions of what happened and who initiated the confrontation, we do not condone James’ role in this altercation,” said Journal editor Kent Walz. “We have apologized to the school and taken what we consider to be appropriate disciplinary action based on what we know at this point. That may be reviewed depending on facts revealed in the legal process.”
The investigating officer reported on Oct. 23 that he had tried to contact Yodice but had not heard from him. For that reason, a criminal summons had been issued. No arraignment date had been set.
