www.currentargus.com/carlsbad-sports/ci_18310008Mike Smith, former player and assistant coach at Hobbs High School has returned to his alma mater to fill the void left when Russ Gilmore resigned his position after 13 seasons that included 5 State Championships. Smith says that he will return to an up and down the floor style, something some Hobbs fans have said was missing from the program in the past few seasons. The press will be back says Smith, who lead Las Cruces High School to 2 semi final appearances in his tenure there. Smith went on to say that the Sixth Man will see about 80% Tasker, and 20% Smith in the 2011-2012 season. Smith said he will meet with current players Monday at Tasker Arena. There is alot of work to do for these kids, as they will have to adjust to a new coaching style and new systems on offense and defense for the upcoming season. The Eagles return several players from last year's team that faltered down the stretch. Other finalists for the job included Jamaal Brown and Vince Taylor, two assistants under Gilmore, and former Clovis star and Artesia coach, Bubba Jennings, who was most recently an assistant at Texas Tech.

Clovis Job is supposed to be filled soon as well, Jennings might be in the running for it as well. CHS narrows coaching search to 10 www.cnjonline.com/articles/chs-3588-enmvarsity-five-coaching.htmlThe candidates for the boys basketball coaching position at Clovis High have been narrowed to 10. CHS athletic director Brian Stacy said Tuesday night that a committee working on the hiring process went through applications earlier in the day and plans five in-person interviews today and five more on Thursday. “It’ll be Thursday night late by the time we finish the interviews,” Stacy said. “None of the central offices are open on Friday, but hopefully we can have a second set of interviews for the superintendent (Terry Myers) on Monday. “Hopefully, we’ll have a coach by Wednesday.” Stacy said he was unable to release the names of the candidates. The position came open earlier this month when J.D. Isler, the Wildcats’ coach for the past 10 seasons, accepted the head coaching position at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas. CHS is also looking to fill its girls soccer position. The main problem is trying to match a teaching position with the new coach.

Well I guess he is staying put at Texas Tech now, this was from a few days ago unless a better opportunity comes along. lubbockonline.com/interact/blog-post/courtney-linehan/2011-06-16/bubba-jennings-rejoins-texas-tech-mens-basketballFormer Texas Tech men's basketball assistant coach Bubba Jennings has rejoined the Red Raider staff. Calls to Jennings and head coach Billy Gillispie were not returned Thursday morning, but multiple sources are confirming that this is Jennings' first day on the job. His exact role in the program is not yet clear. Jennings worked as the video operations manager under Bob Knight, then became an assistant coach under Pat Knight. Jennings returns to the staff as two longtime Tech basketball employees depart. Administrative assistant Leslie Hartline accepted a position with the Red Raider Club, and Jason Imes, director of video operations, stepped down last week. Team athletic trainer Jon Murray also recently stepped down. Jennings is a Clovis, N.M. native who played basketball at Texas Tech under former coach Gerald Myers, earning recognition as the Southwest Conference's Basketball Player and overall Athlete of the Year. After being drafted by the Dallas Mavericks and playing professional basketball in Europe, Jennings began a coaching career that included leading Coronado to district and bi-district championships.

So sad. I saw this guy on the basketball classics NMAA when the 'dog defeated ABQ Academy. I thought he was a good coach

It was also interesting to note that Russ Gilmore, the departed Hobbs coach, applied for the job at Clovis. He didn't get it, which kind of surprises me. But I think it also speaks volumes of how he must have been treated in Hobbs lately.
