Artesia's first season playing in Bulldog Bowl was in 1967. The 'Dogs beat El Paso Bowie in the first varsity game ever played there.
I don't know if they did the Dogpile back then or not.

This bit of trivia should be easily figured out. Or at least narrowed down.

Here is a VERY old picture of the inside of Morris Field. The pic shows the south endzone, but is looking to the east. The rock building is the BACK of the swimming pool concession stand...showers...lockers...etc. The old swimming pool was on the other side (east) of this building. I couldn't find a date for this picture but I am guessing probably 1950s...ONLY a guess!

That's more or less how it looked as our practice field in the eighties.

That's more or less how it looked as our practice field in the eighties. Yeah, pretty much. Immediately to the north (left) of the swimming pool building you SHOULD be able to see the red brick building that is the old boys gym and the cafeteria, but it's not there yet. You can see straight through to what we use to call the old GIRLS gym when I was in school in the 70s. That's what I was basing my 1950s guess on, not sure when the old boys gym and cafeteria were built but I think it was sometime in the early 60s. That red brick building that I am talking about (cafeteria and old boy's gym) also served as the varsity football fieldhouse and locker room for Morris Field in the 1960s.

At Morris Field, the home side was the Wooden bleachers on the East side of stadium.

At Morris Field, the home side was the Wooden bleachers on the East side of stadium. Well, I guess they learned their lesson when it came time to construct the Bowl. In my career I've coached against several teams in West Texas where the home side was on the east sideline. That sun setting in the west can blind you and is often HOT! When we played our JH games at Morris Field (at Park), I can't recall which sideline we used. Maybe Bulldog11 can recall.

Actually I was told the reason the Dogs use the west side of the Stadium is because both sides were originally supposed to be identical but they ran out of money before the east side was finished so the home side was on the west. Don't know if that is true, but that is what I heard.

The Junior High did stand on the west side of Morris Field for a few years but moved across the field after the Park Band would "play" right behind the team and the coaches could not hear. Coach Ray said "lets move across the field and let the visitors deal with the band".

As a child I attended every single varsity home game at Morris Field with my parents on Friday nights, and also play-off games and state championship games. We always sat on the west side rock bleachers with all the other Bulldog fans. That is the side the AHS band sat on, and it is also the side where the Bulldogs bench was. I remember the Bulldogs standing on the west side right in front of us. I never remember sitting on the east side wooden bleachers, and I never remember the Bulldog football team standing on the east side either.

You young guys pay attention. : ). The home side was on the West side of Morris Field. Look at the photos on page 3 and see where the band and the cheerleaders megaphones were. My parents always sat on the West side, in fact if someone happened to be sitting where my Dad's thought his personal seat was he would stand there staring at them till they got up and moved!

Here is a cool old pic of the post office. Check out all of the old cars! I heard from a car expert that the blue & white Dodge is either a 1955 or 1956. So make your own judgements about when this pic was taken, I'm not really sure...late 50s or early 60s maybe? I know that there is a plaque inside the post office and I think it says when it was built, but I didn't pay attention last time I was in there...

Sheesh. I remember going there with my mom when I was a mere rug rat. Don't know that I've ever been in there since. I assume it's still the post office today? Everytime I go home something has been redone and is awesome. Not that this is an eyesore but the people who make those decisions have done a heck of a job making Artesia look like not just another oilfield town. Granted many of the landmarks pay homage to the oilfield, but they are stunning as well. Thanks, Crispy. I enjoy these.

Probably 6-7 years ago they built a brand new "sub-office" or "distribution center" DIRECTLY behind the old ABO Shopping Center. It is on Centre Ave just a few blocks east of the old Abo Elementary School but on the opposite side of the street from the school. Directly behind where the old Furrs grocery store use to be. The old post office, the one in the pic above.....they don't deliver mail out of that office anymore. All of the mail trucks are parked at the NEW building and they deliver mail out of there. However, the NEW building is always locked, even during business hours with the mail trucks coming and going. If you want to transact any business you have to go to the OLD post office. The OLD post office is as busy as ever! The PO boxes are still at the OLD building and if you have to mail a package or buy stamps the old original building is where you go. The new building is locked up like Ft Knox, but the mail trucks are running out of there like crazy.

Mr. Pitch.......THIS is a picture of the brand new sub-office where they now deliver the mail from. The long building to the left is the back of the ABO Shopping Center where the old Furrs Grocery Store use to be. If you get on that sidewalk and walk 3 1/2 blocks to the right (west)......and then cross the street......you will be in the parking lot of Abo Elementary School.

Uh... I never heard of Furr's grocery store. Shhhh! Quit showing everybody how old we are! I remember getting my 4 year old rear end worn out by my momma for eating grapes without paying for them at that Furr's.

Good, but anyone who does that now will be reported to CYFD or another authority.
