Mr. Pitch.......THIS is a picture of the brand new sub-office where they now deliver the mail from. The long building to the left is the back of the ABO Shopping Center where the old Furrs Grocery Store use to be. If you get on that sidewalk and walk 3 1/2 blocks to the right (west)......and then cross the street......you will be in the parking lot of Abo Elementary School. Furrs was there Crispy? I remember Furrs on MainStreet but not there maybe I'm too young lol. Great Picture by the way of the old post office, love those cars and that American Flag on the Pole out front.

Yes, Furr's grocery store was originally in the ABO shopping center on 13th street. When they had the grand opening for the ABO Shopping Center back about 1966-1967 (give or take a year) Furr's was the biggest attraction. It was there since day one. Furr's was at the north end of the building...next door, to the south was T.G.&Y. There were some other businesses in there, but the only other one I remember was ABO Drug way down at the very south end. ABO Drug had a grill and some booths in the back corner and they made awesome burgers, shakes, you name it! All of those places I mentioned were the original businesses in the ABO Center...WAAAAY before the video rental place was there, lol. The ABO Center was built and had it's grand opening about 1966-1967 or so. I remember it vividly. I was probably in 2nd or 3rd grade. We lived just a couple of blocks to the east, near the corner of 11th and Mann. The night that they had the grand opening...yes, it was a night...they had a huge party in the parking lot. They had a big flat-bed trailer parked near the south end of the parking lot that they used as a stage for a county-western band, and they had a huge dance in the parking lot. Half the town showed up. It was really a big deal! But remember, back then we had NOTHING here...no Walmart...no Kmart...no Blue Quail Center...NOTHING! All we had was little places like Wacker's and Sprouse Reitz. The ABO Shopping Center was the biggest thing this town had ever seen at that time.

Back when I went to Zia (Aug 1964 thru May 1967), Zia and Park were then competing junior highs. The Zia Hornets and the Park Trojans (both grades 7-9). When I was in 7th and 8th grade I ate at either Pete's (now Eileen's) where you could get hamburgers for 25 cents and a bottle of coke for a dime) or Bud's Minute Mart for junk food (last I noticed it was a child care facility across 13th Street from Zia). In 9th grade we mainly walked over and ate at Abo Drug (great taquitos and cherry limes at the fountain). It was located on the far left of that shopping center. Furr's was on the far right when it was there, but not sure if it was open back then. That was also where the Richardsons had a music store where we spent a lot of time looking at records (remember those?).
There was also H&J Food Stores and Safeway. Safeway was where Terry's is now. We'd "drag" up and down Main Street doing a Turn around Tastee Freez (now Busters) or A&W Root Beer (loved them cherry lemon lime root beers in a frosted mug), located somewhere between the 13th Street Shell and 15th Street. You could park sort of like at Sonic but without the speakers back then and a carhop took your order at both places and brought your food/drinks to you on a tray that fit on the window). When you got tired of cruising you parked at Safeway to see who else was out and about. Of course, back then, we could all chip in a quarter to put in a dollar's worth of gas (probably about 2 1/2 gallons or so) that would last quite awhile even in our muscle cars. Heck when I was a freshman at NMSU, they would have gas wars where you could get gas for about 25 cents a gallon.
Now I really feel old! Maybe I'll go take a nap (ha-ha).

Yep, I remember all them places. H&J Food Basket was located on the NE corner of 13th & Main in the same building where Artesia Builders is today. Yes, Artesia Builders was a grocery store a long time ago. H&J was owned by 2 local businessmen, J.T. Haile and Bert Jones......thus, the name H&J. And yes, Terry's use to be a Safeway. Two grocery stores at the intersection of 13th & Main...right across the street from each other. If I remember right I think it was Gayle Richardson and his wife Eileen that had the record store at the ABO Center. I think it was back in that little nook where there use to be a beauty shop.

I think there was an empty lot on 13th an Main at one time where I started playing baseball. I was playing for the eagles in minor league ball. I think was about 9 years old.

DEFINITELY! Had the cherry lime or lime coke instead of phosphate though.

Get a load of these 2 old pics of the intersection of 1st & Main. I have heard that Guy Chevrolet has been here forever. I guess it really is true! The very first time I saw the first picture the thing that jumped out at me immediately was the traffic light hanging over the intersection. Probably just flashing red in one direction and flashing yellow in the other direction. I would guess that back in those days maybe 20-30 cars went through that intersection per day? TODAY, that intersection is a mad house! Go through there today at 12 noon or 5pm and you would think you are on the LBJ Freeway in Dallas...it crazy busy! And in the 2nd pic........The Conoco gas station is where Stripes (the old Town & Country) is today. I have no idea really when these pictures were taken.....1940s maybe? Anybody have a clue? ALSO, if you look VERY closely at these 2 pics (especially the 1st one) you can clearly see that there are at least 3 gas pumps under the awning at Guy Chevrolet. I have heard from a lot of the old-timers here in Artesia that Guy Chevrolet use to have gas pumps right on the corner. The place where those gas pumps are in the pic is now all closed in, and it is now their show-room.

What might be fun, Crispy, if you have time and a digital camera, is to run a "Then" photo along with a "Now" photo that you've snapped from as close to the original camera position as possible, perhaps even at the same time of day as the original? For instance, unless my sense of geography fails me, these two photos look like they were taken in the late afternoon, judging from the sun's angle.

There are other locations that look odd. For instance, pictures of Morris Field before Safeway sat on Main Street.

Rick...I don't have a digital camera but I think I can pretty much line up the same shot using Google Earth Street View. That's how I've done a lot of the other modern-day pics on this thread...the new post office at the top of this page for example. I might do that later this evening or tomorrow when I have more time. Can't really do anything about the time of day though.
And as far as your sense of geography...both pics are looking SW.

In the picture that shows the Conoco station, if you look next door to the west of Guy Chevy you can see the old Hardwick Hotel. It was next door to Guy Chevy and faced onto Main Street. At the top of the building (on the side) it says "Hotel Hardwick European Plan". Not sure what European Plan means, but I have heard about the Hardwick Hotel before. But this is the first time I have seen a picture of it.....just now noticed it.

It has been exactly one year since this thread has seen any action. The last post to this thread was made exactly one year ago today. So I thought it was time to bring it back to life! Here is a really cool night-time pic of downtown Artesia. As you can tell from the Landsun Theater in the picture, this pic was taken from the intersection of 5th and Main.....looking east. This picture was obviously taken during the Christmas season, as you can clearly see the Christmas lights strung across Main Street. Also, notice the traffic light at the corner of 5th and Main. Believe it or not, I actually remember when that traffic light was there......I think it was taken down in the early 1970s. It was there when I was in grade school, that much I know for sure. Looking at this pic, and seeing the wet streets, I can almost SMELL the rain and the aroma of fresh popcorn coming from the Landsun! I just wish that the picture of the marquee at the Landsun was clear enough to tell what movie was playing that night. This picture was taken in 1954.....4 years before I was born. Man, what I wouldn't give for a time machine to be able to go back in time and walk up and down the sidewalks of Main Street back when this picture was taken! MUCH simpler times back then! I just found this pic and wanted to share it.

This is an old picture of Artesia High School that was taken in 1964. I know that it was 1964 because I know the lady who took the picture, and she said in was taken in 1964. This was the main building on the AHS campus......in other words, THE HIGH SCHOOL. This building was torn down in the late 1960s to make way for the current high school building. Not exactly sure WHEN in the late '60s it was torn down, but I am thinking probably 1966 or 1967. I remember going down there and sitting in the car with my parents and watching it being demolished.....and I know that I was in elementary school at the time. The front door of this building (where the kids are in the pic) lined up pretty much with where the front door of the Commons Area is today, but the building sat much closer to the street. You can see what we use to call "the old girl's gym" on the far left side of this picture.......the old girls gym is the one that has the Orange Bulldog painted on the front today.

I remember going to plays there when I was in grade school. They would have "semi-professional?" plays that would come through town (like Sleeping Beauty and kid type stuff) and all the kids from all the elementary schools would pile onto school buses and be bussed there to watch them. I can still remember how the auditorium looked and how big every thing seemed. At that age, it was all magical!

Crispysdad, Cool pic of the old high school. It was taken a year or two after I graduated (63). Clicked on the picture and was taken to your photo bucket (crispysdad's Bucket). Hope you don't mind but you have some really neat photos in there from way back when. A&W, the old Dairy Queen, old Morris Field, Frenchy's and others. Was kinda surprised to not see a picture of the old Mac's Steak in the Rough on S. 1st (actually Mac's started in Artesia). Our "cruising" loop was from A&W to Mac's and back about 25 times a night.
