Our cruising loop in the 80's was Circle K to Sonic. First street was never part of it, for us.

Crispysdad, Cool pic of the old high school. It was taken a year or two after I graduated (63). Clicked on the picture and was taken to your photo bucket (crispysdad's Bucket). Hope you don't mind but you have some really neat photos in there from way back when. A&W, the old Dairy Queen, old Morris Field, Frenchy's and others. Was kinda surprised to not see a picture of the old Mac's Steak in the Rough on S. 1st (actually Mac's started in Artesia). Our "cruising" loop was from A&W to Mac's and back about 25 times a night. Naw, I don't mind. A lot of those pics in my photobucket account have already been posted in this thread. I know the A&W pic is on page 3 for example.

Our cruising loop in the 80's was Circle K to Sonic. First street was never part of it, for us. I graduated from AHS in 1976, so my high school years were 1973-1976. Back then our cruising loop was from Sonic all the way to Roselawn, then right on Roselawn for one block to Quay, right on Quay for one block to 4th Street, then right on 4th back to Main, hang a left on Main and back to Sonic and do it all over again 25-30 times. So basically when we got to Roselawn we just turned right and made a block. Pretty sure that Sonic has been the turn-around point on the west end for as long as Sonic has been there. But the east end of the loop seems to vary from year to year. I remember coming home for a weekend after my 2nd or 3rd year of college and went out dragging Main with my younger sister who was still in high school. She was driving! I remember thinking how strange it was that everybody was turning around in the Circle K parking lot. It just didn't feel right, lol. And no, we NEVER cruised 1st Street when I was in high school. That just seems weird, lol. Oh, and just one more thing.......WHO ELSE has ever been in this boat besides me? When you were in high school you use to cruise Main every Saturday night and you knew EVERYBODY who was cruising. THEN, after you graduated from AHS and have been away at college for 1 or 2 years you come back home to Artesia for a weekend.....or maybe even for the summer.....and that very first Saturday night that you are back in Artesia you decide to "hit the strip" expecting to hook up with all of your old high school friends. And there is NOBODY out cruising Main that you know! NOBODY!!! Just a bunch of danged "kids". And that my friends, is a very sad and depressing feeling. At least is was for me! Anybody else?

I guess that the reason we used 1st was that when you got low on gas or tired of cruising you either parked at A&W or Mac's and set and watched who came by and who was riding with whom. My first visit back after graduation the west turn around had changed from the A&W to the Tastee Freeze. I went cruising the first night back and never have I felt so old in my life watching the new crowd that night! Still had 2 sisters in AHS at that time and from that time on would not go cruising with them (or anyone else).

Photo courtesy of "Rapid" Roy Lawson. I found it on his facebook page and asked him if he minded if I posted it here. Thanks Rapid! Here is an old pic of the 1974 AHS 440 and 880 relay team. Left to right: Mike Gray (Sr), Richie Crockett (Jr), Roy Lawson (Soph), and Cole Boyce (Jr). As for where these 4 guys are today: Mike Gray, I have no idea. Richie Crockett still lives in Artesia and is a local crop duster, I use to see Richie flying all around Artesia in his yellow spray plane but I'm not sure if he still has the same plane. Roy Lawson works at First American Bank in Artesia and posts under the name "Rapid" on this board. Cole Boyce passed away just last week. RIP Cole!

Time to revive this old thread again! This old picture was taken in front of Artesia High School in either 1942 or 1943. The reason I know that is because I know who Donald Simons is, and he was in the Cadet Corps at AHS during those 2 years......his junior and senior years. Also, I got this old photo from one of his family members, and she tells me that it was taken in 1942-1943. I have no idea who wrote on the photo, or what it says.....it was like that when I got it. Donald Simons was part of the very prestigious Simons family of Artesia. That family ran the Simons & Simons Insurance Agency here in Artesia for many years. This photo was taken by the flag pole in front of AHS.....from in front of where the commons area is located today. In this photo you can clearly see the front steps of the OLD high school building...the building that is no longer there. And beyond that, you can see what we use to call the OLD girls gym. The old girls gym is the building that has the Bulldog painted on the front today. I had never heard of the High School Cadet Corps. I am assuming that it was pretty much the same as what the Junior ROTC programs are today. I know that some high schools across the country today have Junior ROTC programs. Meet you on the football field you say? Heck no, we're just gonna invade!!! LOL. It was a very different world in the early 1940s, and I had NO idea about this part of Artesia High School's history. I just thought this was SO cool and wanted to pass it along.

Not an expert on Artesia history. Just a great place my family migrated to from West Texas for a little while. But I thought Artesia/Miller Siding was a fairly young city. If this is late 1800's and those structures were already there, it must be older than I was always assuming. This picture is pretty neat. Thanks for sharing. Think anyone in this picture wore an orange helmet? Regarding the building on the right at the next corner, is not the original First National Bank building. It was torn down. The building you see is now Heritage Inn.

NaylorHammer...is this you Jades? Anyway, all you did was quote my post...just wondering if you meant to make a comment. If you added a comment then I am not seeing it. Are you related to the Naylor kid in the picture? If this really is Jades I know that your family goes WAAAY back in the history of Artesia, almost to it's founding.

Artesia's first season playing in Bulldog Bowl was in 1967. The 'Dogs beat El Paso Bowie in the first varsity game ever played there. I don't know if they did the Dogpile back then or not. Yes, we did dogpile in '67. I played in '66, '67, and '68. I can't remember if we dogpiled in 1966 but I would bet we did. Artesia 55 - EP Bowie 26. Wayne Mansell scored the first 2 touchdowns in Bulldog Bowl in 1967.
