Can anyone shine some light on this for me. I now live in Odessa TX and been having some friendly arguments (LOL). Have we ever played any Odessa Permian or Odessa High teams in the past or any other Texas teams other then El Paso and Seminole teams? I know there has been more but is probably before my time. Any information that help me back my arguments will be much appreciated.

Here you go...every Bulldog football score from 1953 all the way up to 2010... artesiabulldogfootball.com/Past%20Scores.pdfAs far as the Odessa schools go the only thing I know about for sure is a 7-on-7 passing game that we did with Permian twice sometime back in the 90s, I am thinking mid to late 90s. I know that Roy Williams was on the team but I don't know if he was a soph, junior, or senior. I remember talking to some of the Permian coaches after the one in Artesia and asked them who the tall black kid was that was catching every thing they threw his way and they told me.....Roy Williams. That was the first time I ever heard his name, and also the first time I ever saw anybody spike/dunk the ball over the goal post at Bulldog Bowl. We did 7-on-7 with mojo twice that year, the 1st time at their place and the 2nd time at Bulldog Bowl. The first one in Odessa we handled them rather easily from what I was told...I didn't go. The second one at The Bowl it was just the opposite. "Rapid" would probably remember it and he might even know for sure which year, I think he's been to just about every Bulldog game, scrimmage, and 7-on-7 since the beginning of time. OOPS! Every game up to 2010, NOT 2012...Fixed it!

Alumni96 I thought it was you guys that scrimmaged Odessa Permian before the start of the season, maybe like a 3 team scrimmage or something like that. I remember the Permian busses parked at the Bowl, could have sworn it was you guys or maybe the year before you that scrimmaged them. That's all I remember is a scrimmage no regular season game or anything like that, the link crispy posted goes back through most of the years we played.

Used to play all 3 Odessa schools occasionally on junior varsity. But I know Artesia has never played Permian or Odessa High in a regular season game. I have talked to people who played against Ector High years ago.

Just something that I have wondered about for quite a few years..........In 1960 Artesia played Lake Worth TX. The Bulldogs won that game 51-0 at Morris Field. Lake Worth is a suburb of Ft Worth. Ronnie Null has (or had) a copy of the game program from that Artesia vs Lake Worth game at his antique shop on Main street. It was NOT for sale, just hanging on the wall in a zip-lock bag for display.
What I always wondered is this......How did that game come about? Always wondered WHY we played Lake Worth TX, that would have been one heck of a road trip for either team. Pretty sure that was even before LG Henderson's time, not sure who the Bulldog's coach was back then. I always wondered why they played that game, maybe the 2 coaches were friends or something? I have never talked to anybody that knew the answer.

But the Bulldogs DID play Odessa Permian in the championship game of the Artesia Invitational Baseball Tournament one year.....I am thinking it was in the late 80s or early 90s, not really sure which year and too lazy to look it up. And we beat their A$$. That made me smile. What I do remember is that it was Mike Winchell's senior year, so it shouldn't be too hard to track down exactly what year it was. Winchell was in the Mojo pitching rotation but he did not pitch that night from what I remember...they had him playing some other position, short stop or 2nd maybe. I have the newspaper clipping from that game somewhere. I am thinking that Luigi Bratcher pitched for Artesia in that game.

They close down Odessa Ector High School I can't remember what year.

I didn't see the Artesia/Permian baseball game but I know what you say is true. I heard a lot about it. As for Ector, I beleive it is still in operation as a junior high. My dad was an Odessan. Despite it's relatively long distance from Permian High which is located on 42nd street,(Ector was between 1st and 2nd street)when Ector closed down in the late 70's, many kids still found their way to Permian, rather than to OHS which was about 7 blocks away. My dad, thought that was odd. It would have been like someone living on 18th and Runyan going to Roselawn Elementary. Old timers will tell you it had much to do with a youngster's football prowess.

I actually knew that T.W. was from Odessa believe it or not. He was an Odessa High Bronco wasn't he?

Yes he was a Bronco, they were the only high school in town in his day. He lived on the corner of 10th and Texas, which is much closer to OHS than where Permian was eventually built. I think he would have been a Bronco anyway. I have many relatives living in Odessa, out of all of those who came later, and it is a ton, only 1 girl cousin that I know of ever went to PHS, and she eventually graduated from Midland Lee. Still, my dad was a Permian fan and a friend with many Permian coaches including Tam Hollingshead and Gary Gaines. Incidentally, Larry Gatlin of the Gatlin Brothers is a distant cousin. He was also a Bronco.

Really? My dad met him once or twice. We have so much family in Odessa it's hard to know them all. I know I never met him. Roy Orbison was also a family member but again, i knew him not. Never met him. My parents were around him in the early '60's and had nice things to say. I do know his son Wesley, who is the only one of the 3 sons that survived past childhood. By the way, as far as I know the Gatlin's and Roy Orbison were not related.

Artesia did play Permian in the baseball invitational. Mike Wenchell who was the qb in the movie Friday Night Lights pitched in the tournament in 89' I believe and also made the all tournament team.

That movie was on a lot the past couple weeks, maybe because the Texas Playoffs were finishing up. I like that movie, I was reading about it and seems like most people from Odessa despise the movie, they exploited story lines and just showed them in a negative light, a win at all cost program, and Boobie Miles could barely read or write but was playing football. Does anyone think West Texas can reach that success again? I think it would take one heck of a stud for them to win titles again ala Cedric Benson at Midland Lee was just unstoppable in the early 2000's man what a bum he was in the pros, he could have been great.

Speed, athletes and development programs are all in DFW and Austin and affluent Houston areas. That is where the Titles come from in the foreseeable future

The small schools are still anybodies game. You can win with smash mouth football. In fact Katy came darn close with smash mouth principles this year in the 5A class. But the rest of the state will have to resort to a different type of football than trying to match the speed of the metro areas in a spread offense. Football is a circle. It'll work it's way back around. But no west Texas team is gonna take down an Argyle, Guyer, or Cedar Hill by trying to match them talent wise. While we are talking about Texas football, if Art Briles goes to the University of Texas, It's over for everyone else in the Big 12. He's that good.
