I'm 90 miles away and I've been told of much anticipation regarding next football season. I never doubted that Coach Henderson and the coaches would rally the kids despite some unfortunate setbacks last year. I know people are tired of hearing me say it but the defense is going to get better and better year after year as the kids spend more time in the new defensive philosophy that is in place program-wide.

When I was in school, we played more smash-mouth football and it could sometimes get boring so I've enjoyed the new phase. However, IMO, nothing beats a goal line stand, a hit you can hear in the stands, or, more nowadays, a pick six. I'm looking forward to the new defense and the new season.

I was fortunate to play defense for the Dogs under Coach Harvey and Coach Dickerson (my position coach) We played a smash-mouth style of defense. IMO we had too, the wishbone offense we run was more of a ball control offense than today's wide open attack. So you need it a defense capable of holding teams to low scores. In 1981 my senior year even after all the injuries we had, going 6-4 and 0-1 in the playoffs we were not blown out by any team.
vs. Hobbs: 15-14 vs. Roswell: 3-28 vs. Carlsbad: 3-30 vs. Fabens, Texas: 28-0 vs. Goddard: 19-13 vs. Seminole, Texas: 13-33 vs. Tucumcari: 38-10 vs. Portales: 0-26 vs. Lovington: 35-19 vs. NMMI: 41-13 vs. Aztec: 0-27 I often wonder how good a Bulldog team will be with a Coach Harvey Defense and a Coach Henderson Offense.

Rapid you need to get some of those high school athletes in your family who live in Texas to move to Artesia so the thought of having a good season can become a reality.....LOL

Of course, Rapid was no slouch either!!! He was a stand-out DE for the Bulldogs...1973...1974...1975. Now, I don't remember if he was actually a starter his soph year in 1973, but you know what I mean. Those were Rapid's high school years. You've heard of shut-down corners? Well, Rapid was what I would call a shut-down DE. A game changer! Nobody wanted to go to Rapid's side of the line, he had that intimidation factor. The only one that has come along since that I would even put in Rapid's league was Marc West who played quite a few years ago. But Rapid was bigger and faster than Marc. Also safe to say that without Rapid, Artesia would have lost that 1975 state title game to St. Pius...I know because I was there. Pius had the lead, and the ball, and was driving to run out the clock in the last few minutes when Rapid jumped on a fumble. That enabled a last second, diving catch into the endzone by Corey Tolle on the very next series from QB Jerry Brown. Yeah, yeah, I know...we have all heard that story before but I never get tired of talking about it, lol. And yes, Rapid has had some outstanding Texas high school football players in his family. I believe that one of Rapid's Uncles played with Earl Campbell on that legendary Tyler John Tyler team back in the 70s.

If I lived near Artesia, I would be there at the games. I will be attending the games when they come to Los Lunas, to play Valencia. One game at a time, hope they take the blue trophy.

I think if not, He went to school with Earl, I have to ask my uncle again. But I had another cousin from Troup Texas (1973)play against Earl, he told me they never could beat John Tyler Lions. John Tyler was too good but Troup hang with them. Troup alway had a good football team.Hey crisp I wonder if you could those pic of Troup on this site for me. I cannot post any more pic on here because my storage box is full. Thanks
