I'll have to do better on getting defensive plays but how about the play of Codey Scott on defense.
Pretty sure he had at least 4 sacks, listening to radio station on the way home said maybe 4 or 5. Had 3 sacks against Belen as well. Is their a sack record for Artesia? Caleb Choate(2006) was the last guy I remember to really terrorize the QB on a consistent basis and rack up the sacks, I was thinking he had quite a few and maybe held that record?

Randall, I was just telling somebody at the game Friday night that Codey reminded me a lot of Caleb Choate. The guy was like....Who? And I was trying to explain to him that he was the kid on the 2006 team that wore #45....transferred in from Big Spring TX his junior year.....his mom worked at the hospital...etc etc. Tried everything I could think of to get the guy to understand who I was talking about, and I still don't think he got it and he's been going to Bulldog football games forever, lol. Glad to see that somebody remembers Caleb Choate besides me. He was a monster! Before that, the last one that really sticks in my mind is Tyler Deans who was a senior on the 2000 team. All 3 of those guys.....Codey, Caleb Choate, and Tyler Deans.....are like they were from the same mold as far as getting after the QB goes.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know who the new announcers were on the radio? I hated the way they complained about all the missed the calls (especially holding). Temporary replacements or permanent fixtures? Sounded like they might be students to me.

You no GoDogs, I think we were thinking the same thing....One of the announcers however said that the Hobbs offense were too quick to set up formation and run the play the the referees were not catching all the penalties including the one where Artesia had 12 men on the field. Yea, I was thinking the same thing. I think it happened with Artesia played Belen too...

The announcers are not students! They are Joby Houghtaling and Kevin Baggerly! They are so much better than the guys the last two years! give them a chance, it is just their second game! They are not professional football announcers. They will be fine, they are both avid Bulldog fans. We can't replace Coach Wilbourn overnight as the last two years have proven! Hang tough, guys, you have my support at least I can tell we are listening to a football game this year and we don't have all these really stupid conversations going on about who knows what!!!!

Joby definitely knows football but I do think he calls plays a little too early way too often. Luckily I was able to watch the game online but I would be irritated if I had to listen on the radio. I don't know how many times I heard "catches the ball...no wait he dropped it" or "he's gonna sack the qb...the qb escapes" or "he's gonna run it in for the td/first down etc...looks like he's short by a yard". I'm not sure if I'm the only who noticed that. Other than that, he explains and understands the game well and announces it clearly.

I don't care whether they are professional or not, I just don't want to hear OUR announcers complaining about the refs, etc. He kind of reminded me of Tom Brown, Jr. sometimes because I remember Tom saying something like he's broke through and running hard and then when the play was over he would say something like - for a gain of 1 yard. That used to crack me up but I always waited for the end of the play and didn't get excited too soon. They were a little bit emotional at times too, like with the catches ... I know I heard at least once "damn it, he dropped it." I'll get used to them but please lay off the refs. You can mention it once or so but every other play is too much. At least it was a home game so the other team couldn't say we were complaining about their refs. I know we can't all have Jack Nixon, but it would be nice!

Sorry, but that is hilarious.........because I remember Tom Brown Jr. doing the exact same thing! My parents use to get so frustrated listening to him on the radio. Don't get me wrong, Tommy is a great guy and he LOVES his Artesia Bulldogs...but with him you had better not get too excited...just wait until the play was over. I remember him calling games on the radio back in the late '60s (I think) and most of the '70s (definitely). I didn't know anybody else on here was old enough to remember him. I think he called games with Dave Button for a while, they were like a team! In fact, if I close my eyes I can still hear Tommy and Dave calling Bulldog games on the radio. Great times!

Cody Scott is one of the best I have ever seen at defensive end and as previously noted there have been some really good ones. As for announcers I think Joby is doing a great job. That is a pretty tough job especially when you follow someone like Jim Wilburn. As for complaining about the officiating Joby did a lot less than all the people in my section. It's also hard for me to argue with him when he was right. Hobbs was holding all night long. Not an excuse but call a spade a spade.

Good morning Bulldog pro boards nation. My name is Joby Houghtaling and as mentioned above, I am one of the guys doing the call on the radio station for the Artesia Bulldogs. I would like to say that all those that came before Kevin & I as the broadcasting crew did a good job and I am sure they all loved the Bulldogs and did their best. I am an Artesia Bulldog through and through and bleed orange. I played for the Bulldogs and then came back to title town after college to work and raise my kids here. I have already had two go through and graduate and my wife and I have our last coming up through the schools now. I appreciate all constructive criticism as well as the compliments. I made a comment to the radio station guys last fall that I would be interested in doing play by play for the Bulldogs if the opportunity ever presented itself. In January I was approached and given the opportunity to do the basketball games. It was a lot of fun and when I was asked to continue and do the baseball games I said you bet. Then somewhere in the middle of baseball season it was discussed if I would do football and I agreed as I truly love the game. Although, as it was pointed out, I am not a trained professional in radio broadcasting, I always try and do my best at everything I do and this is and will be no different. For GoDogs, we definitely announce our names as to who we are several times though out the games, but I do not expect everyone to know me, so I will let you know personally that I am not a high school student. I guess this means I (we) sounded pretty poor as typically when someone says something like that in this context the inference is that a poor job was done. I will try to improve. Erik, I will also try and not get ahead of myself when calling. Generally speaking, I am very familiar with our program and the plays we run on offense as well as the defensive schemes we use. Due to this, I guess I am tending to get out in front of the play - I will work on this as well. Additionally, I see the field fairly well and when I see a penalty happen, I speak of it as that is part of calling the game. I do understand, however, that if the refs don't call it that I shouldn't be so negative towards them. Again, I will work on this as well. Next, I generally don't use curse words, really ever, although I probably did say dang-it which was heard as damn it. I will make a conscience effort to not use negative words at all much less slang for cuss words as I agree that there is no place for them in any ones vocabulary, much less heard in a public way. Lastly, now that you all know who I am on this forum I would appreciate if I knew who each of you are that have concerns about the fun job I get to do broadcasting our games. My cell number is 575.308.3146 and I would love to hear from you personally as to how I can do better. Give me a call, introduce yourself, unless we already know each other, and lets have a soda together and discuss all things Bulldogs! Thanks again for the feedback and I hope to see all of you at the games the balance of the year and in future years to come!
Go Bulldogs! Take State!!

Hi Joby..... I am bloodrunsorange and I can speak for myself as well as my husband we truly enjoy listening to you and Kevin you can tell you both enjoy the game and make us laugh as well. I wouldn't want to even try to announce a game. As far as the penalties that were happening I feel as a fan listening on the radio it's good to know whats going. You both are doing a great job and will continue to do so and grow in your talents the more you do it.
Appreciatively,
Randy and Leta Scott

I had to make a quick trip to Amarillo this past weekend and I thought you did great calling the game Joby, I was able to get to my destination in time to watch the livestream the second half, and only issue I had with that was my sound was out of synch with the video but sure it was something I was doing wrong lol. Keep up the great work Bulldog Tradition lives on. Michael Grantham

Thanks for getting on here Joby, as I mentioned I definitely appreciate that you have great football knowledge and IQ, you can call the plays and formations very well. My only critique (and take this with a grain of salt because I cannot do live broadcasts for the life of me) was that sometimes you called the play before it was over and the outcome was different than you had stated. Ie, he's gonna get sacked and then the QB escapes. But anyway, I enjoy the commentary as well as being able to watch it online. Keep up the good work (btw, I heard you call basketball games last season I think and you did amazing...definitely a fast paced game to announce).

My name is Gilbert Guerrero. I usually listed to the 4th quarter of the game as I'm driving home from seeing the team where my son is a coach. Since we are an hour ahead I'm able to do that. You guys are doing a great job.
