The Carlsbad Sports Editor is working on a article for the Eddy County War to be published in their paper.
Asked me for some stories, events, history and so on, here is what she said.
I was hoping you’d be willing to help put a little color into the story on the traditions behind the Caveman vs. Bulldogs games, maybe some little known facts, or speak to what makes this game one of the bigger events in the county, etc. Not that this article isn’t about the sport itself so much as it is about the history of the ECW.
You guys are my best resource so if you got some stories about the game, history, etc please post and share them. I'll get these passed on to their editor. Thanks!

The only thing that comes to mind right away is the Artesia/Carlsbad game of 1975 that was played in Carlsbad.....and the brawl.....melee.....riot.....all out war, that broke out immediately after the game ended. Bulldogs and Cavemen fighting on the field, Artesia and Carlsbad fans fighting in the stands, just about everybody was involved. Thought I was going to have to crawl out of Caveman Stadium on my hands and knees to avoid getting hit with a rock or a bottle! Felt very lucky to get to my car in one piece. It lasted for a couple of minutes after the game. It was so bad that they cancelled the Artesia/Carlsbad game for a couple of years after that, if I remember correctly. I am sure that Charliedog could share some info on the exact particulars.
It was indeed a night to remember! I have forgotten most of what happened on the field during that game, but I have remembered what happened AFTER that game for 40 years. But what I just described is probably not what the Carlsbad Sports Editor had in mind......because it's not a tradition, and it was just an all-round bad situation.....she's probably looking for "happier" things. "Feel good" things. The only reason I brought it up is because whenever the Artesia/Carlsbad rivalry is brought up that 1975 game and what happened after the game is the first thing that comes to mind.

I remember that game I was a senior playing defensive end and my wife also remembers that game also, I think the school took a bus to the football game that night, after the game was over we were getting ready to go across to the locker room and that's when Carlsbad was kneeling like praising us and that's what started the fighting and the Carlsbad fans running out to the field to help Carlsbad players, one of our players Jeffery Baca was getting beat and I went to help him out and I got into a fight myself I think it was uncalled for all of that to happen it was just a game win or lose Carlsbad beat us by 5 points we can take a loss and they broke our 22 winning streak and after that we went on to win the state championship game against St. Pius X

One memory was the 2004 game in Carlsbad. Artesia had won and my family was enjoying a dinner at wendys. A brawl broke out where I saw 3 guys knocked out cold. 2 were from Carlsbad and 1 from Artesia. One of the Carlsbad boys was left there a bloody mess knocked out cold then a few minutes later a truck pulls up throws him in the bed of the truck and leaves. Those guys were using bats sticks brass knuckles or anything they could get their hands on.

I have a couple of friends who may or may not be employed at Artesia schools who would be interested to know if the statute of limitations is up. Hey the 1976 game was not cancelled. Carlsbad elected to not show up to play, knowing full-well they were fixing to get their tail kicked. It's really Charliedog's story to tell if he chooses. . .

It stinking snowed and almost stuck on the ground and they called and said We are afraid to come over there. Yea they cancelled and we objected. They went to their knees in the 75 game and started chanting the KING IS DEAD. Then several Cavemen started attacking some players and all heck broke loose. Ronnie Maskew got hit and it was ugly. Really bad blood. "they" burned C on the berm when the games started again. They then had students in 79 paint several cars of the players on Wednesday night before the game while players were watching film. Coach Larry Ray and I ran out and saw the car and then had to testify in the trial. I saw a car and saw it drive away and spent over an hour on the witness stand. Each of the kids who painted the cars had their own lawyer. One lawyer asked me if I hated Carlsbad and I replied No I don't hate Carlsbad and he said do you hate the Carlsbad Cavemen and I said well hate is a strong word. It brought a laugh from the crowd in Court Room. Yea I could tell a ton of stories including the mystery blue plane in 74 that dropped leaflets that had BEAT ARTESIA and hand written notes on them. OK guys you are going to have to read between the lines here but I do remember Brenna Green having an article in Daily Press about that plane and even had a picture of one of the leaflets and the hand written not on it and I went into instant panic.

I'm pretty sure it was the 2005 Game, I remember my mom and little sister being at the game with me in Carlsbad. It was halftime I believe and two boys in blue speedos ran out onto the field and were doing Jumping Jacks and the cops were trying to corral them and they started running off the field. I got a good laugh out of that.

This is an interesting topic. When I started at the ADP in 1977, I wondered why Artesia and Carlsbad weren't scheduled to play a varsity football game that year. That's when I found out about the 1975 game at Carlsbad.
Looked up some back issues, and it seems that in the wake of that game -- all the Dave Perini-inspired bowing, the fights and whatnot -- the schools decided to cancel all scheduled varsity matchups between the two for the rest of the 1975-1976 school year, regardless of sport.
I think it was just varsity sports; it might've been JV, too. Can't recall what they did for the 1976-1977 school year -- they might've resumed the series in all sports, and the varsity football game was the lone casualty.
I heard several interesting snow yarns about that latter non-game. John Gunderson even told me once that the Bulldog football coaches once promised him a case of beer if, late one dark night, he'd burn a large letter "C" into the Bulldog Bowl turf.
He said he was caught in the act by some Bulldog football players.

My guess would be that Coach Maskew (aka Barney Rubble) was swinging away at their knees, and the other guy was swinging at empty air and wondering where Coach Maskew's head was.

I remember that, we had only one loss and it was to Carlsbad.....and Carlsbad had only one win, and it was against us. Not really sure which year, but pretty sure it was back in the '90s. I am thinking it was the year that Texas high school coaching legand WT Stapler was the head coach at Carlsbad. Coach Stapler was only at Carlsbad for one year. Was that the same year that Carlsbad beat us with the fumblerooskie???

Carlsbad led by WT Stapler, defeated Artesia in 1994 via the fumblerooskie. Stapler was my boss for my first Andrews stint in the early '90's. He retired in Texas, in the spring of 1994 and went to Carlsbad. He asked me to go with him to coach in Carlsbad. I told him the truth, that my parents would be very hurt if I wore Carlsbad blue. My dad took his extreme dislike of Carlsbad to the grave. He wouldn't spit on Carlsbad if it were on fire.

Bones and I sat next to him for 6 years after that Carlsbad chicken out game and yes he did not like the Cavemen. Man I just wish I had written down all the quotes he had about Carlsbad
