St. Pius X the rest of the story..... From toothlessdog ( I save this article )
In 1974, two things happened that changed the shape of NM football, Mike Phipps was named the Head coach at Artesia and we dropped down from 4A to 3A because of enrollment figures. In our district that year was St. Pius X the two-time defending state champion. The 74 team after beating teams like Eldorado, Mayfield, Goddard, and Roswell went to Duke stadium in Albuquerque and put a 48-0 thumping on Pius. The next year, Pius was removed from our district. We played at Kirtland- Central in the Semi's. After a long bus ride home, we found out we had to go back to Albuquerque to play Pius for state on a Friday night. The game was played in a drizzle on and off. We were down 17-0 until a minute left in the third quarter. We scored our first td after 95 yard drive and converted on a two point conversion. The clock was out on the scoreboard, so time was kept on the field by the referees. they showed the minutes on the baseball scoreboard. You didn't know if was 2 minutes and 59 seconds or 2 minutes and 1 second left. We scored again in the fourth qtr to get within a fg 17-15. We get the ball back for one final drive and on a 4th and 1 with two minute left, we get stopped short. Pius ball, a big 1 on the baseball clock. they run the ball, the big fullback fumbles and RAPID ROY recovers the ball. Coach Phipps calls a play action pass, Jerry Brown slips and puts the ball on the ground to hold himself up. He throws to the end zone and As I turn for the ball my feet slip out from under me, the ball drops right to me as I am folling down. Coach Phipps gets State Championship #8. He never panicked, stayed with the running game and we won. The next spring, He went to University of Florida and brought back a 3,5, and 7 step drop back passing game to add to his wishbone attack .....
