That interception at the end was a heck of play.

St Pius gave a tougher game than I thought they would. Has anybody ever got hurt on the bottom of the dogpile?

That interception was awesome! Great shot of it. It was hard to see online. Check out the QB's reaction afterwards.
See y'all Saturday. My and family and I will be down for Thanksgiving.

Great as usual. I did notice the qb from the Sartans. The Agony of defeat. I also noticed the qb from Artesia. Don't you think he needs to protect the football a bit better? ,

St Pius gave a tougher game than I thought they would. Has anybody ever got hurt on the bottom of the dogpile? I've never heard of anyone getting maimed. There has been some air knocked out of people and a errant knee to the groin on occasion but never heard of an injury. I remember hearing, "Get the heck off me!" on almost a weekly occasion from the folks at the bottom of the pile. But you know the same fellas would be right back at the bottom the next week.

Really I wouldn't be upset if they did away with the dog pile. They won't till someone gets really hurt.

The dog pile is one of the greatest traditions Artesia football has! I can remember a couple times being on the bottom of the pile where I felt my helmet caving in on me, and once I over jumped the pile and got the infamous knee to the groin (Which was also noticeable on that years highlight video haha). There was never any serious injuries doing the dog pile, since we start it in junior high, everyone pretty much knows how to tuck and cover, or avoid the bottom!

I recall one player whose name I will not mention, getting a broken arm in the dog pile. When my oldest son was a sophomore in '98 he raced out in front the team the 1st game of the year and was smack dab in the middle of the dog pile. (I was watching from the pressbox). (Laughing), My recollection is that he did get up a little wobblely. Talked to him later, he said he nearly passed out because he couldn't breathe, because of all the weight on top, and would never be on the bottom again. The dog pile is a one of a kind tradition that never should be discontinued, unless, of course, you want to go with a soccer mentality..(hahahah)

Anyone know who came up with this great tradition? Coach or player and year?

Anyone know who came up with this great tradition? Coach or player and year? No idea! But if I had to guess I would say maybe somebody like assistant coaches Max Ratliff, Bill Waters, or Harold Kirkpatrick. I seriously doubt that Coach L.G. Henderson would have particularly cared for the idea, but he might have gone along with it if one of his assistant coaches really wanted to do it. If one of those 3 guys didn't come up with the idea......then they probably know who did. Although, coaches Waters and Kirkpatrick are no longer with us. But if I really had to put money on it, I would say Coach Kirkpatrick. Sounds just like something he would have come up with.

I don't remember them doing it when I was in school (graduated in 1971). Maybe the group of coaches after L. G. Henderson left. Coach Allen might know. Personally, I love it. As far as I know, no one else does it. They used to have a special link on the web (Artesia Bulldogs game entrance ends up with bodes on the turf) immortalizing it but guess it's gone now.

Oh they were most definitely doing it in 1971.....no doubt whatsoever! The very last season that we played at Morris Field was the 1966 season, and they were doing it then. How I know is because my mom and dad......both AHS alums......were dragging me to Bulldog Football games at Morris Field since before I can even remember, and as a VERY young child the dogpile was my favorite part of the entire game. At 6-7 years old I didn't give a rat's you-know-what about the game, I was all about the DOGPILE. And I was born in 1958 so you can do the math. If I had to guess, I would say that the dogpile goes back AT LEAST to the very early 1960s............and MOST DEFINITELY '64 '65 and '66.

Not for sure who started it but we always practiced it. Many opposing Coaches use to make their players turn their backs so not to watch and get further psyched out.
