I liked the Belen game. Having that comparison with that district for seeding time was a good thing. I wonder why we lost that one. The Las Cruces game I can understand because of the new "super-district" the brilliant NMAA created. Cleveland will be a tough game, that is a big school and a great program.

Are we for sure that this info is really legit, and not just word of mouth? Seems awfully early! I didn't think that schedules were set until later in the off-season. I have just never heard of scheduling information coming out the first week after the championship game before.

Game with Cleveland is official. Friday September 23 in the Bowl I believe. I know the Bowl for sure but the date may be off. We had to drop Belen because we needed to fit Carlsbad in for the first game of the season. either we drop Carlsbad and play Belen or we play Carlsbad and drop Belen. The actual redistricting was done by the Superintendents in this state and the southern portion were the ones behind how Clovis, Hobbs and Carlsbad were split. Clovis, Hobbs and Carlsbad admins were happy with the outcome. No plans to appeal at all. The only people who don't like it are the fans. Coaches are happy. It looks like Goddard is dropping Hobbs and Clovis from their schedule in favor of playing Chaparral and another 5A school to be named later. Times are a changing as they always do. We used to schedule Texas schools every year as did Clovis and now it's tough to schedule them with how they have done their redistricting in Texas. You think we are crazy just go see how they do things over there. Leaves you scratching your head. Year in year out we were playing teams like Pecos, Kermit, Seminole, Fabens and such. We don't play El Paso schools because of the way they treat us before the game with their facilities. Schedules are getting done now and lots of new matchups not seen before. Some old matchups being lost because of redistricting and scheduling conflicts. Clovis and Hobbs will play the first game of the season. nmpreps.n.rivals.com/news/cleveland-and-artesia-set-to-play-in-2016-football-seasonYou need a subscription to read stuff at NMPreps but this one is for free. Wish i had a subscription to read the reaction to this.

Thanks for the info! It's just hard to tell sometimes where all of this info is coming from. Not too long ago I heard from a very reliable source.....some might even call it an official source.....that Alamogordo would be dropping down and moving into OUR district. And now it appears that is NOT going to happen.

Wish i had a subscription to read the reaction to this. This is light-hearted humor, do not take it the wrong way! I just find this statement quite humorous. True, more teams over here make the playoffs than don't, but we don't seed teams in the playoffs. That embarrasses me when one of my buddies hears about that and asks me if it's true. I think you were referring to the wide travel range of our districts. But we now have 10 11-man classes, so the teams are as close as possible. We also have 2 6 man classes, which brings up something else. And you guys don't give a rip, I know. But why does NM play 8 man football? That handcuffs people severely. They just need 2 classes of 6 man football if they think it necessary. The worst thing it does is, that it cuts the number of potential in-state opponents in half. Say you had Lake Arthur and Tatum wanting to play. They can't because Tatum is 8 man and Lake Arthur is 6 man. I mean don't hamstring your own folks. The second reason to do away with 8 man football is because they can't play anyone out of state because no one in their right mind would play 8 man football. Before you say Kansas does, note that I said, "anyone in their right mind." The third reason to do away with 8 man football is because I know of at least 1 school, Tatum, who wants to play 11 man football and petitions every year but the NMAA won't let them because they need more 8 man schools to fill out that classification. I know none of this is what doglover was referring to, I'm not chastizing him, just the NMAA.

Las Cruces for Cleveland is a pretty even trade I think, would have been a very tough matchup this year but year in and out I think we can compete well with them.
Their coach Heath played for Lovington, and at Eastern. He knows what Artesia is about, looking forward to this one next year.

I think it is great that the two defending state champs play each other the next year. I only wish it was RRHS, I believe in getting better by playing good teams. I would rather have a loss against a good team going into the playoffs than a victory aqainst an opponent that pads the schedule. I remember when RR v Artesia was on ESPN, dont think they do that anymore on Friday nights but this would be a definite game to televise. A lot of colege scouts will be there.

I recently heard we did lose the Las Cruces game and picked up Los Lunas. If that is true I guess the way to look at it is Los Lunas for Belen and Cleveland for Las Cruces. Carlsbad first game of the year ought to be interesting.

Hey Mike, I remember that as well! But ESPN didn't show the entire game.....instead they would show highlights of the Artesia vs RR game in progress. I think there was an NFL game that ESPN was broadcasting that night, and the Artesia vs RR game was going on at the same time. ESPN would cut into their NFL broadcast and show highlights of the Artesia vs Rio Rancho game.......usually just a couple of plays when they were coming out of a commercial break. I do remember that they talked quite a bit about the Artesia vs RR game during half-time of the NFL game that they were broadcasting. One thing that I do remember for sure.........it happened during Chris Williams' senior year at Rio Rancho. EDITED: It might have been a college game rather than an NFL game, not really sure.

Carlsbad first game of the year ought to be interesting. I heard we lost them because of their big district which will require them to have a district game on the date we normally would have played them. I think both schools desired to keep playing but other obligations prevented that. Darn glad they saved the Carlsbad game. Always fun beating those guys.

Read yesterday, Belen's head coach's contract was not renewed! That seems a little crazy! AD recommended renewal, Superintendent said no, no other explanation. He was like 73-21 and two State game appearances. I just don't get it, have never heard anything negative about him!

I agree Jades. From everything I have heard on the local sportscast he was well respected. When they showed him in the teaser before the commercial I thought he retired. You were close, record was 71-22, I dont think high school coaching should be "what have you done for me lately?" like college and the pros.

I think the world gets dumber every year. No one seems to have or at least doesn't use common sense any more.
