Job will be closed to applicants on Jan 20th. There have been interviews and will continue through the end of the week. Expect an announcement sometime next week. Some really good coaches from Arlington Martin and Cedar Hill in the metroplex have applied. Will be interesting to see if the admin decides to bring someone in or just promote someone from within.

For some background, the athletic director is Robert Arreola. He is married to ex Lovington Coach Faith's daughter. Sources around Lovington say that it'll be Faith. This does come with some controversy. Is this the right hire or should Lovington go outside?

This does come with some controversy. Is this the right hire or should Lovington go outside? Lovington should go outside Why, what is your reasoning, Coach Faith was successful there before. He is a good man and a good coach. If I remember correctly, he wasn't fired, he resigned to take a position in Texas. If he is the best candidate, why not him? He should not receive preferential treatment because of his son-in-law's position but should not be hindered by it either. I do realize Lovington is in a different, more competitive class now than before but any coach will have to deal with that issue, the same as Cooper has had to over the years. I remember Cooper's response to moving to a more competitive class was to put on your big boy pants and put the work in and get better so you can compete. I think we have seen that exact thing, particular with the OL and DL getting bigger and stronger and being able to run the ball when needed. Not trying to slam your response but just want to know your thoughts on why go outside.

Lovington is not a good job. Well has run dry of the athletes needed to compete. Their Junior Highs use to finish high in Border Conference. How have the done the last 3-4 years? I keep hearing they are not doing well. Speed use to be prevalent and the speed is gone. Not for sure if I would want the job. It will take someone like Speedy to get kids back out and get them in the weight room and to develop some kids for their Senior year like Artesia does.

It wasn't only the "athletes" they had, but Speedy was always good at getting the most out of the guys who weren't "athletes" when he was at Lovington......he was great at getting the most out of the "regular Joes" and getting them to give 150% and play over their heads........over achieve so to speak. So...when will we know something? At the next school board meeting? If so, when does the school board meet? EDIT: And just one more thing. Didn't Speedy Faith coach and teach in Artesia at least one year? I was at AHS from 73-76....Class of 76......and I could swear that I remember seeing him roaming the halls at AHS.

Coach Faith was my 8th grade football coach. That season was 1980. He was gone by the time I got to HS. Staff was top heavy but if I remember right he was moved up to HS at one point by a skiing accident that left Coach Norton with a broken leg. I'm remembering now that he was definitely on the Lovington sideline my 9th grade season which was 1981. He treated me very well. He was a great teacher also. We loved him but his blood was blue. I would go to war for him but he ended up where he needed to be. He coached with a chip on his shoulder sort of like our coaches did. I always felt like our coaches had no use for anyone not wearing black. I feel the same way about Speedy and blue.

Speedy came up to Coach Secondary in football season of 79 and I moved over to O-Line to replace Coach Norton while he healed.

Good hire in my opinion. Lovington had to go outside the box and try to change the culture on the joke that Lovington has become. They were 1-9 last year and the city of Lovington isn't ideal to live in. Going back to old roots with Speedy wasn't going to change anything. The talent level isn't what is used to be, but most of all is the lack of strength these players have now. Someone who comes from the Dallas area and has played against top level teams should be able to at least change the culture in Lovington. I don't know how it took so long for the hire to be made, but going outside the program was the best decision made.

Lovington has hired Ft Worth Dunbar defensive coordinator Anthony Gonzales. Interesting! From what I remember, FW Dunbar has historically had a bad to mediocre football program at best. And believe it or not, I have actually seen FW Dunbar play in person although it was many years ago. Back when I was attending college in Abilene one of my best friends was from Benbrook TX and had played football for Western Hills his senior year. But he was originally from Roswell, and had played 2 years for Roswell High Coyotes before his family moved to Benbrook TX and he finished his senior year as a starter for Western Hills High School. Anyway, back around 1978 or 1979 he and I decided to take in a Dallas Cowboy game at the old Texas Stadium.......stayed with his parents at his home in Benbrook the weekend we were there. The Friday night before the Cowboys game we attended a high school game of his alma-mater......went and watched Western Hills vs Ft Worth Dunbar. I don't remember who won the game, but what I do remember is that the football I witnessed that night was extremely bad. Not typical Texas high school football by any stretch of the imagination. Both teams were VERY bad! Penalties...interceptions...fumbles....fights....absolutely no discipline...you name it. Players were even visiting with their friends in the stands whenever they weren't on the field, and coaches didn't even seem to care. Just all around very bad football. We were sitting there watching the game and I asked him.......since he was familiar with Roswell High.......who did he think had the better team. He laughed and told me that Roswell High would mop the floor with either of the teams we were watching that night. But that WAS way back in the late 1970s, so it's really neither here-nor-there. Just an interesting story that I thought I would relate.

Ft. Worth ISD football is rotten with a capital R. Copmpares to El Paso football. They do put out their fair share of DI athletes but they do not reflect other programs in the DFW area. I do know that at one time Dunbar had the national record in the 400m relay. They are also amazing at basketball. None of this is necessarily a reflection of Gonzales. Often times the collapse of a program is a direct result of things beyond the coaches control. I could go on and on about that, but it was not long ago that everyone's(myself included) opinion of Coach Q was very good. But I would hesitate to think a coaching change is all they need. One thing I do know is that probably on some level HS principal Mike Michaleson was involved in the process. He's as good as they come.
