Arguably one of the greatest Coaches in the History of American High School Football is retiring. Who takes his place?

He didn't retire. He is still the AD. My vote is Jeff Willingham. If I had a vote.

Little suprised, he leaves at the top of his game with back to back titles. A total of 14 he brought to Artesia and 1 with Ruidoso for 15 total. I kinda figured we would have a good shot at a 3 peat next year, didn't expect the Centennial game to be the end for Cooper.
End of an Era in Artesia.

I'm honored to have played for Coach Henderson and win two state championships under his guidance. He is an outstanding coach, and an even better person. He is a true leader of men, and Artesia will now have some huge shoes to fill.

By ELIZABETH LEWIS - Daily Press Staff WriterPublished: 2:12 pm (Elizabeth Lewis - Daily Press) (Elizabeth Lewis – Daily Press) www.artesianews.com/1239952/bulldog-football-coach-henderson-announces-resignation.htmlLongtime Artesia High School head football coach Cooper Henderson and Artesia Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Crit Caton came together this afternoon to make an announcement that has quickly sent shockwaves through the community and the state – after 27 years, Henderson is stepping down as coach of the Bulldogs. “Our community is well aware that the football program is a rich tradition and good things that have happened through the years with all the different directions,” Henderson said today at a press event at the APS Administration Building. “One thing we’re all interested in is the long-range of success of the program. “From time to time, that’s going to include some changes. I feel like it’s the right time for the transition of head football coach.” Henderson said he’s not quite ready to completely retire. “I’m looking forward to continuing to be the athletic director for the high school as well as help any way I can to make that program successful,” he said. “I just feel like it’s a good time for a transition. I’m certainly not ready to retire and to stop working. I still have hopes to find ways to work with young athletes.” Caton expressed his gratitude to Henderson. “I’d like to tell Coach Henderson personally, on behalf of the Artesia Public Schools and the Board of Education, we appreciate the service that he’s given,” Caton said. “The young men he’s developed throughout the course of his career, not only as athletes but as young men that ended up productive citizens – he’s done a tremendous job, and he’s part of the reasons – one of the main reasons – why Artesia is the City of Champions. “We’re extremely excited about the potential we have in our other programs as he continues to be our athletic director. We understand that there comes a time when everybody chooses the moment to step down. I did my best to talk him out of it, but we’re extremely pleased for Coach Henderson and his family. He told me he prayed a lot about it, and he feels this is the right decision. Today, I’d like to tell him thank you for being our head football coach.” Henderson thanked his athletes, past and present, and his wife, Judy, for her support during his career. “It has been a real joy. It was a very meaningful part of my life, and I definitely enjoyed the young men that came through the program,” said Henderson. “I would also like to thank my wife who was a huge part of my ability to do whatever I was able to contribute. I do look forward to hopefully making things happen for our young people.” The APS will be posting the position of head coach and begin the search for viable candidates soon. “We’ll probably post the position pretty quickly – before next week,” said Caton. “We feel like we have a number of viable candidates from inside. More than likely, we’ll take a look inside first and if we feel like we can’t find a replacement from within, we’ll do an outside search. We’ll accept applications from everyone, but we’re going to take a good look inside first.” According to Henderson, he will not be a part of the hiring process for the next head coach. “I will probably excuse myself if family ends up applying for the job,” said Henderson. “Honestly, I think we have a lot of good coaches on our staff. I really think that’s why we’re able to be successful and do what we’ve done. I would certainly hope that one of the people in the system would meet the needs for the next head football coach.” Henderson has been coaching football since 1977, coming to Artesia in 1989 from Ruidoso. Over the course of his time with the Bulldogs, he compiled an overall record of 293-103-1 and appeared in 16 state championship, 14 of which resulted in state titles for the program.

lol
Still hard to believe, you know it couldn't last forever, he looks the same to me as he did in 1997 but he's put in his time. I thought my kid might get to play for him, redeem my name ha ha. I'm a little concerned with the uncertainty, I hope the tradition continues on, I believe it will but no one can say for sure until it happens again.

Good luch Coach Henderson, in my opinion the best coach in any sport in the state since I have came back to the state (May 93) in any sport, college or high school. Don Flannagan of UNM lady Lobos second. One of the local sports channels said he had 250 wins, what was his overall record Randall? Thanks.

There appears to be a bit of confusion about his overall record it seems, depending on which source you use. Or maybe it's just ME that is confused. According to the NMAA he has 269 wins (1984-2014)......note that it only goes up to, and includes, 2014. Last year (2015) we had a 12-1 record. So add the 12 wins from last year to the 269......and that SHOULD mean 281 total wins. Here is the link. Scroll all the way to the bottom and it is under.....Coaching Records, Most Career Wins In New Mexico. media.wix.com/ugd/c49f6e_a99121df1d6e4c378f0bbf4a68cee930.pdfBUT, according to the very last paragraph of the Daily Press article that Randall posted above...... "Over the course of his time with the Bulldogs, he compiled an overall record of 293-103-1" So, the Daily Press says 293 wins, ALL of those from his time in Artesia. BUT if you do the math with the NMAA numbers and add the 12 from last year it it comes up to an NMAA figure of 281 wins. And the NMAA included his wins from when he was in Ruidoso in the 269 figure.......it says so when you check the link. More total wins in Artesia alone than Artesia and Ruidoso combined??? Makes absolutely NO sense to me!

I know two things, #1 Artesia forfeited some games one season for violation of a NMAA rule. This might have muddied the issue some and caused confusion. #2 As of 2011 he had 214 AHS victories. You fill in 2012,13,14,15. He had either 40 or 41 Ruidoso wins. I cant find a record for 1984 but we beat them in the seimifinals that year so they played 13 games. They won 12 in winning the 1985 title and 12 in losing the 1986 title, and 8 in losing the 1987 title. That's gonna give him in the range of just over 290 wins.

The TV report I heard was wrong, the Journal also went with 293 wins, never have seen a loss total but I know he has a great winning percentage.

He was an assistant in Portales I had no idea that he ever coached in Portales in any capacity.....interesting! Me putting Portales in my post was an honest mistake, but I think I figured out why I did it. Our son is an graduate of ENMU Portales, and his mailings....newsletters, bulletins, etc.........all come to our house. AND I just happened to have the latest edition of "Green and Silver" right here on my computer desk.....using it as a coaster, lol. Probably glanced at it and had Portales on the brain. Anyway, went back and edited my post. Like I said, I had no idea he was ever in Portales. I knew about Ruidoso and Perryton TX. Also, didn't he coach somewhere in Amarillo? Not sure which school in Amarillo. Anybody know?

Ok, if Coach Henderson had 41 wins at Ruidoso from 84-88 (ask Coach Willingham he probably knows since he was playing from 84-86 The won/loss record from 1989-2015 247-87-0 at Artesia. I have a copy of every record and score since 1953-2010. My other source is New Mexico High School Football www.nmhsfb.comso 288 wins didn't know anything about vacated wins... A more relevant for record for Coach Henderson and the Artesia Bulldogs is playoffs. 55-9-0 (and just a couple of trophies)!
