For the first time since 2002, the Aggies have a winning football season, and for the first time since 1960, they're going bowling! What a day! Bulldogs win historic 30th State Championship and Aggies are bowl eligible. Expect to play December 29 in the Arizona Bowl.

The Aggies finished 7-5?

OK, that's slight exaggeration, LOL. They actually finished 6-6 (so it's not a losing season either), but it was the first time they've had that many wins since Coach Samuel.
Of course with the Aggie's luck, we may be one of the few left out of a bowl game. I think I heard 81 eligible and only 78 bowls or something.
You also have to realize that, as an Aggie football fan, it doesn't take much to put us over the moon. I was beginning to think that hope really does spring eternal.

I know exactly what you mean (I went to UTEP). For the Miners, a 6-6 season would be a major success.
Good for NMSU. Several years ago, the Aggies upset Arizona State, so in celebration I went up to the Corbett Center and picked up a couple of Aggie T-shirts to wear in El Paso. Still have 'em.
You're absolutely right about the absurd number of bowl games. Let's see what happens with the pairings. NMSU has earned a bowl bid ahead of any 5-7 team.

Have seen several projections with the Aggies going to the Arizona Bowl paired with Utah State.

I was really excited myself. My husband said he saw tears in my eyes after our last touchdown when we were watching it. While Warren Woodson was there NMSU was pretty good but they decided he needed to retire and that's when the Woodson Curse took over. Think that was around 1968 or so. I was there from 1971-1975 and we were bad enough even then that someone painted the I-10 sign to say Interstate 10, Aggies 0. I like to think of Woodson looking down on this team and smiling because the curse is (possibly) over.

One thing that shows how well Coach Martin is doing (and how lucky NMSU is to have him) is to compare compensation.
Davies compensation: $823,940 base pay, plus max bonuses for a total = $1,313,940 with a buyout of $1,725,984 Martin compensation: $376,044 base pay, plus max bonuses for a total = $ 511,044 with a buyout of $ 30,337
Quite a difference, huh?

Happy for the Aggies but still cant get excited about a 6 win team going to a bowl, rewards mediocrity. If the NCAA made it 7 wins against D1A competition it would eliminate some useless bowls.

Supply and demand. All of these bowls with 6-win teams must be making money or they'd quit. Glad the Aggies are going to get to take advantage of it. Maybe it will help at least a little with recruiting and it's a very nice reward for Coach Martin and "his first" team. Also doesn't hurt to let the standouts like Rose, Scott, Hanks and Lofts, et al, get the national attention. Seems like I've heard about more pro scouts checking them out this year, too. Even if they don't get to go on to the NFL some will at least get a chance to make a team. Even a CFL team will continue some of their dreams ... look at Buck Pierce, Chris Williams, Warren Moon and Kurt Warner.
I admit I probably wouldn't be watching the Arizona Bowl if NMSU wasn't in it but I hope it will put more butts in the seats in Las Cruces next year and we can build on it.

Congrats to the Aggies and there fans. I am happy for them. Rodgers didn't have a good game but I counted at least 5 drops. I hope they can carry the momentum of this win into next year.

These are probably my 2 favorite articles about the win: 'Pure emotion' carries New Mexico State to thrilling overtime winNMSU Wins Absolutely Unbelievable, Wacky Arizona BowlI just hope we can carry this forward. Also, after losing our basketball coach to UNM, I was expecting a rough transition season this year, but Coach Jans has proved me wrong. Basketball team now stands 12-3 with a sweep of both UNM and UTEP and wins over Illinois, and in the Diamond Head Classic, a win over Davidson and #6 Miami, before falling to USC in the championship game. Hopefully, the basketball team and build on the first part of the season to finish strong.

Unfortunately my Aggies lost several hundred thousand $$$ on this bowl game. No school makes one on Bowl games unless you play in a New Year's 6 game. It's exciting that we get this reward but the down side is we lose more money. The Bowl game makes money. This Bowl is hanging by a thread but this year should help. At least they got CBSSports to televise it. Last year they were only on the internet.
NMSU raised about $32,000 this last week to help offset costs. They advertised for donations that ended last night to help offset costs. Howany schools do that??
Next year won't be as good as this year. It's also getting really hard to schedule games as an independent. No TV contract. No Bowl tie in. It's going to be tough. The NM Bowl has a contract for at least 5 more years that leaves out any chance of NMSU being in it. They are tied up with the MWC and CUSA with the PAC12 as a back up to fill in if one of the conferences can't fill their commitment.
If NMSU we're to have an undefeated season they cannot qualify for a New Year's 6 game because they are independent. Only conference affeliated schools can qualify unless you are Notre Dame.
Great year to be an Aggie.

2017 ended great for our Aggies. Maybe not in 2018, but I've chosen to look at the bright side for a few days. It's not like we get a whole lot of them. I understand the money problems but we have them anyway. Maybe we could get UNM to donate some of their ill-gotten gains. Just please let us enjoy this one win, especially the kids that worked so hard for it, and we'll go back to raising money, furnishing snacks, etc., tomorrow.

Just read on the Aggies website that RRHS offensive tackle Evan Tafoya-Vallo is now going there, he switched from UTEP. Don't know if he will redshirt or not but hopefully he will have success with the Aggies like his ex teammate Grant Hermanns who started as a redshirt freshman at Purdue before getting injured in the 2017 season. Great news!
