Unfortunately thats how things roll in Artesia. How Carlsbad pays teachers so much more than Artesia does just boggles my mind. To lose a talent like Jeff Willingham just bothers me. We need to take care of our own. I almost feel like the school takes advantage of kids who grow up here and want to come back here to teach. Well take care of them like Carlsbad takes care of theirs. Jeff happens to be a Ruidoso kid who played for Cooper Henderson in Ruidoso and had great success. Coach Henderson eventually hired him in Artesia. He has been one of our best defensive coordinators ever in Artesia. He was the best since Mike Worley was around. Kids play out of their mind for him. Yet we just let him walk away like that. I'm not going to elaborate on other factors in his decision to leave but the administration knows. That's what really bothers me. Sorry for my rant but I don't expect an assistant to leave for another assistants job. I expect a coordinator to only leave for a head coaching job. That kills me.

Well that stinks for us.
He's done a good job here that's for sure.
I know nothing of the situation but he did apply for the Clovis job last year, so I feel he probably wants to move up the ladder and be a head coach someday somewhere, chances are probably better in Carlsbad, or he helps them build up that defense there and it's another solid addition to his resume for a Head Coach Job.
Thanks Coach Willingham, good luck to you.

Artesia is way behind in a lot of areas. I won't expound on them as I respect your site and don't really want to polute it with this. If anyone wants to know more about this sitation PM me and I will tell you what I know. I love Artesia but I hate how things are happening or not happening in some cases. Suffice to say "PitchGod", whose name is poking fun at me I beleive, is more right than wrong and only touching the tip of the iceberg. I'm angry that this has happened, understand that before you contact me.

As I stated in an earlier thread several months ago, problems coming for a small town 30 miles north of Carlsbad. First shoe drops. Willingham is the new DC in Carlsbad. Bulldog assistant coaches leave all the time. They are in high demand! Maupin went to Los Lunas......Olivas left for Hagerman.........Barry Chambers went to Deming. Heck, even the GODFATHER of Artesia Bulldog Football LG Henderson himself left Artesia to coach in Alice TX. Yet the State Titles just keep rolling in! And the reason that those State Titles keep rolling in is because Bulldog Football is bigger than any one coach. I wish only the best for Coach Willingham, and I hope that he and his family is are happy in Carlsbad. But I will make a bold prediction right now.....Artesia will win #31 before C-bad wins their 2nd (their first and only title was back in the early 1960s). There is a saying in Bulldog Land for when a player goes down........"Next Man Up".........Well, I would like to change that to......"Next Coach Up"!!!

That's the kind of thinking that is causing the problem. What happened when the "next man up" was the guy Willingham replaced? But keep patting yourself on the back. Coaches can't afford to think that way, even though I don't coach in Artesia, I love it as much as anyone. Those state titles didn't put themselves on the press box. You just had a great coach walk out the door. How can you spin that to be not a bad thing? And I'm with you on the Carlsbad title thing. Pretty safe assumption you made. They aren't gonna win. But are you gonna be happy if the titles don't come in near as often for Artesia? Also, I stated there are problems. PROBLEMS BIGGER THAN ANY ONE COACH, to spin off your pretty original quote. I think Johnston will do great, but he will need help. No ones knocking down the doors to coach in Artesia. Didn't we not replace the last coach who left? Why was that? But keep pretending that there aren't problems. It's tough to watch.

Find out why those guys have left. Yes it was to move up the ladder. There is no ladder to move up here. If you get promoted to a coordinator and are in charge of the off-season program and the summer program you do not get compensated for the promotion or the extra duties. If you question the compensation for the added duties then you are told that's the way it is. Loyalty should be a two way street.

Hmmm. Many programs would love to have that problem in order to be successful. I know I would.

The "Next Coach Up" mentality is what you must have in this situation but the reality is that this is a huge loss for Artesia Football. To let a coach of this caliber walk out the door for a lateral move to your enemy is unbelievable to me. The folks in Carlsbad got an early Christmas present - it's not everyday a coach of this caliber lands on your doorstep.

I deleted my original post on this topic. It was insensitive to Willingham and his situation. I overreacted upon reading the news. Hate to see him go(especially to Cbad).

Ditto on Cbad sentiment Skeezix. I am getting over my anger as well. Just want what's best for Artesia. IMO what's best for Artesia is finding a way to hold onto and get great people. I think that will involve being proactive. I want to be clear that I consider it very important that I want get and keep awesome teachers and professional personnel. It's not only about athletics. Merry Christmas

I have a friend that is an administrator who moved from Roswell to Chad. Why? The money was much better and opportunity for advancing. On the other hand too political. Then again that is NM

I will miss Coach Willingham and wish him good luck in the future. (Except for 1 week per year.) I reminded a friend of mine the other day that we have 30 State Championship in the last 60 years. Not one Coach has been there the whole time. We have been blessed with great head Coaches and assistant Coaches over the years. As Charliedog always says “ Tradition never graduates”. It applies to our Coaching staff as well.
As for the future, we have some very good younger Coaches moving up the ladder. Stephen Johnston who grew up a Bulldog under Cooper Henderson and Randy Dickerson appears to be the next man up on defense. I am confident he is up to the challenge. Things change but one thing will never change “its great to be a Bulldog! Let’s go get #31....
