From Carlsbad Current Argus. www.currentargus.com/story/sports/2018/08/19/carlsbad-cavemen-artesia-bulldogs-senior-sound-off/1027210002/he overall record of the Eddy County War may be close, but for more than a decade the Artesia Bulldogs have dominated the show down. Currently riding a four-game winning streak in the rivalry, Artesia is 13-2 in the last 15 years and hasn’t lost consecutive Eddy County War games since 2001 and 2002. Artesia’s current crop of seniors have never lost to Carlsbad and are looking to extend that winning streak to five games. With a shortened preseason this year and the Eddy County War being the first game on the schedule for both Cavemen and Bulldogs for just the third time in its history, the play calling may be a little more basic, but the passion that comes with a rivalry game will still be there. Carlsbad Carlsbad wants to end the Bulldogs winning streak and start a new one of its own. With a group of 21 seniors on the Cavemen’s team, Carlsbad believes this is their year. “They’re going to come out strong and we’re going to come out strong,” Carlsbad senior Tate Collins said. “That’s how it’s always been. We have a lot of seniors this year. They’re good leaders on the field.” Last year Artesia started out strong against the Cavemen and never let up, ending the game with a shutout victory. “They just came out and hit us in the mouth before we could hit them,” Carlsbad senior Wyatt Hotter said. “We weren’t ready and just weren’t expecting such a big hit at the beginning of the game.” The Cavemen will attempt to control the line of scrimmage on both sides to keep Artesia's scoring down early on and to secure a good chance at a victory. “Our most important thing is our pass rushers on the outside,” Carlsbad senior Taylor Miterko said. “We need penetration on the D-Line. We need to stop the screen. Most importantly we just need pass rushers to get back to that quarterback and make him make a mistake.” The first game of the season, a win or loss will not save or end either team’s season, but both are looking for a win to help set the season's tone. “It’s our first game of the season,” Carlsbad senior Kyle Daniell said. “Obviously, it’s important because it comes first. With this a rivalry game, it’s always exciting.” Artesia Colin Flood, a senior middle linebacker for Artesia, knows the importance of starting out the season strong, rivalry game or not. “A lot of people look at it like it’s this big game that we’ve got to focus on anytime,” Flood said. “I think it’s just another game where we have to go out and beat the team. We can’t just look at this as one of the big, big games of the season. Every single game we go out we should be thinking that this is the biggest game of the season.” Even with that mindset, Flood said he doesn’t want to see the Bulldog's winning streak broken by Carlsbad. “If everybody does their jobs, we’ll be perfectly fine on defense,” he said. “We lost a few starters, but the guys filling in for those starters are doing great. They’re filling in perfect. We didn’t lose a step at all on defense. I think we’re going to do what we did last season.” Artesia senior and the new starting quarterback Trent Taylor is looking forward to the Eddy County War but isn’t thinking of it in terms of a rivalry game. “We’ve played these guys since eighth grade,” Taylor said. “I wouldn’t necessarily call it a rivalry game. I would call it a fun game because the Eddy County War is always fun. I think this is a good chance to play a really good team.” Taylor said the challenge of facing off against a team a higher class means the Bulldogs have a chance to test themselves. “They’re (Carlsbad) going to make us better,” Taylor said. “We go into every game looking to always get better. If we can come away with the win that’ll be a nice 6A win. That’s always nice. We want to play some good competition, which Carlsbad brings because they always play their best against us. We’re excited. They’re excited.”

As I drift to sleep in my lumpy cheap mattress watching deathly hallows part 2 I know that tomarrow evening the new season game one will roll into Artesia. A lot of bulldog supporters will expect a lot from these kids. And for the most part the dogs will deliver. We will hear the cheers from fans and some of the more hardcore fans will yell at the kids and refs when they screw up but remember, it’s a game. Yes it’s the war of eddy county that’s why I put A7X this means war song on there lol.
Tomarrow will drag on forever cause that’s what first games do. Makes the day seem like it will never end. But then that drive to the bowl the parking lot fills, that long walk to the front gate. The smell of popcorn and you see old friends all over. That anticipation builds like a volcano.
Are you ready? Lol I know I am. “ITS GREAT TO BE A BULLDOG!”

Artesia was outcoached and outplayed. The boys were scared and didn’t play with passion.

Cavemen win 28-14
Tough one to swallow tonight, started off great but fizzled out after the 1st quarter.
Anyone that throws in the towel after 1 game come on, knee jerk reaction. We will bounce back. Just a warning I don’t want to see any players or coach called out it will be deleted. Discuss the game but don’t throw anyone under the bus. Think before you post all I ask.

I don't know who that is? I have a feeling he is trolling. Maybe not....but the dogs won't finish 0 and 10. They will bounce back.

Don't think he's trolling, been here for awhile, made his 2nd post 0-10, I'm assuming he means we lose every game on the schedule
City/Program doesn't get 30 titles and give up after 1 loss, especially 1st game to start the year.
maybe just frustrated post but come on man, you can be better than that. Get on board, buckle up, week 2 won't be any easier, but time to dig in and go for it again next Friday.

Offense just didn't have the same pop and the defense really didn't play that badly. In years past the offense forced other teams to abandon the run due to the high point total. The Carlsbad defensive stops built up their confidence levels and they were able to stick to simple run plays. I think this will be repeated if we're not able to crank up the offensive fire power again. Our track record says one way or another we'll get that offense rolling again.
