Pretty much what I expected to see, unfortunately. Defense is a problem. It was last year and is again this year. Awful. And worse is, it’s becoming common place to get ran over.
I was actually surprised how out of sync the offense was. Especially for Artesia. Bad snaps, careless passes and penalties galore. We are usually more crisp offensively (even in game one).

Artesia did score 35 points. Not bad for game 1, however. Carlsbad is a mediocre team. Is Artesia going the way of Odessa Permian? Well maybe they will improve for next game? Did Hobbs beat Clovis?

Sad to say but the program is headed in the wrong direction. Since Rex has taken over the kids moral has not been the same. Help needed before a complete crash of a once dominate program

Team Loss. 150 yards of penalties, bad snaps and a young defense. Quit looking for blame and get better. Saw some bright spots but we have a long way to go. Go Dogs!

fix the ankle biting on D and start hitting and wrapping up. Everything I saw is fixable. Kids played soft on D. Got to get a bit nasty and mean and take it personal they are driving the ball down your throat every drive. Quit tackling low on the ankles. Just some fundamental changes and they can compete

I wonder if the D Coordinator is aware of your observations?

I am sure he is and I am sure he will work on those things I certainly hope you are right. I want nothing more than my Dogs to stay on top. But I’m quickly losing faith defensively. This season picked up where last season ended. The Bulldogs getting ran over.

I’ll remind everyone that we won state in ‘96 with arguably the worst defense in school history (I believe even still holds the record for most points allowed in a season...and a Coach Worley defense I might add). That team had a good quarterback and some really good receivers much like this year’s team. The offensive mental mistakes are easily fixable. This offense is going to shine, no doubt. As for the defense, buckle up folks for some high scoring games. Not enough talent and aggressiveness to turn that ship around in any significant way.
The only permanent fix that I see to the defensive problems is playing more kids both ways. Been in Texas now over a decade and we play a lot our boys both ways, regardless of classification. You really have to put your 11 best athletes on the field if you wanna compete with the big boys, especially if you are a smaller school.

The defense definitely needs some improvements. They are chronically undersized. It wasn't hard for Carlsbad to push them off the ball and surge forward everytime. They running back was in the secondary most runs before anyone even touched him. I agree that some of the better players on offense need to play both ways. Especially in the secondary. There's no way some of the undersized and inexperienced players can hang with the likes of Hobbs and Cleveland. Any team that can throw the ball is going to torch some of the cornerbacks. Especially the one that is only 5'2". My two cents anyways. Hopefully they can turn things around.

As hard as pull to swallow loosing a football game is I know no body in this town likes loosing them. Especially to Carlsbad. But let’s not forget that when the numbers are greater for a school the talent level is going to elevate. Carlsbad has grown tremendously in the last few years population wise and artesia hasn’t. Talent pool is not as great. But that’s still not a excuse. Many years artesia has been out sized out talented out coached and still found ways to win. Don’t give up just yet. Coach’s are doing good. Stop being the negative nelly and just know that there is 6 more games to go before district. There will be time to improve. Don’t let this turn into Friday night lights the movie. Why gains must go! Why gains must stay! Just relax there will be contenders for the crown. Can’t make a omelet without breaking a few eggs boys. Hold on it’s gonna be bumpy ride this year. Looking forward to it. GO BULLDOGS!
