I see a good varsity team if they continue to play together. Go dogs cream the coyotes I agree that when these kids are seniors they SHOULD be one of the best Bulldog teams in history! That should be the 2021 season, correct? If they stay together, and continue to play well together, they should be unstoppable. But this is the rub, you see......I see problems in their future........I guess you could say that I have reservations. Granted that they are one heck of a team right now with some real talent. What are they, undefeated at 7-0? But here is the problem as I see it. Hope I don't ruffle too many feathers but they are eventually going to encounter sub-par coaching at the high school level. Especially on the defensive side of the ball. It is NO secret that our defensive coaching staff on the varsity level has problems right now. I guess what I am trying to say is that I hope the high school coaching staff doesn't screw these kids up. And that brings up a question.......can a group of kids with excellent talent and work ethic over-come poor coaching and poor defensive schemes?

I don’t agree with your words at all. I played for coach Johnston and know the coach and motivator he is. Im glad that our defensive coaches families and loved ones don’t read these posts. Feel free to put an application in to Artesia public schools if you feel like you can do better. Go Bulldogs!!

Maybe some of these guys could start on defense against Roswell this Friday Some of the Sophs are already playing defense and have bee all year. That’s part of the problem, we are very young on defense.

If you are stacked with talent on offense but you’re having to start young and undersized boys on defense, wouldn’t common sense tell you to play some of the talented and athletic offensive players on defense?

If you are stacked with talent on offense but you’re having to start young and undersized boys on defense, wouldn’t common sense tell you to play some of the talented and athletic offensive players on defense? THAT would involve one HECK of a learning curve. Don't forget that these players have been platooning since they were in 7th grade. At least I assume that to be the case....I could very well be wrong. And that is where the learning curve comes into play. I don't care HOW gifted an offensive player is......QB...RB.....etc. You are not going to teach a QB...RB...or receiver how to play the LB or DB position over-night no matter how gifted of an offensive player they are. Especially if they have NEVER played on the defensive side of the football since they began playing organized football. NOW.....if they had been playing both sides of the ball since 7th grade it might be possible. Just an example.........Let's take the most talented player at his position in recent memory......Landry Jones. As great of a QB as he was, and he was a once in a life-time kind of player.......If Landry had been suddenly thrust into the role of playing DB in his senior year, he would have been burned on routes more times than you can imagine. Once again, not taking anything away from Landry as a QB.....that would be absolutely stupid. But it takes a few years to learn a new position, even for the most talented of athletes.

Says who?!? You have got to be kidding me. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the talent level of 5A New Mexico football is below average....and when you can take an athlete that can run , jump, open his hips, and do athletic things.... I would take them all day long over the kids that can't run, jump, move lateral, and open their hips.... And 2 years to learn a new position??? First I have heard of that... I have seen guys do it in a DAY at the highest levels of college football. You do have to be athletic though. Non athletes need not apply. Against good teams in crucial situations, there is no reason not to have your best athletes on the field. And a good QB like Landry knows more about what DB's do than most DB's and he is an ATHLETE. Artesia can get away with it some years when they have a LB or 2 and maybe a good pass rusher. But in the years where there are slim pickens and they play better teams, sometimes that offense can't score enough points.

Wanted to point out a couple things.
Cooper Henderson is the head jv coach, all the other coaches are helping coach these kids as well. sophs practiced early in the morning and varsity in the afternoon, same position coaches for both groups.
We had a unique schedule, out of 7 games we only played 2 homes games. So most games it was just Coach Henderson to call the offense and Coach Sanchez called the Defense. At our 2 home games all the coaches are there coaching them as well.
Once kids get to 10th they receive so much more coaching, I believe that was beneficial to us as well. Gotta give them all credit as well.
Yes they will be seniors 2021 football season, hopefully we will be celebrating then and sooner, thanks for all the good comments about them, trust me we haven't had many the last couple years. Gotta keep on working, see where they end up. This year was certainly encouraging, controlled the scrimmage with LaCueva, good wins over Centennial, Hobbs, Clovis. Gotta see how we do against Roswell and Goddard in the years to come, that's what will really matter.

A lot of upcoming talent. The Clovis JV is no pushover. Excited to see this bunch on variety next year.
