97 & 98 Ruidoso had some good teams. 1998 team beat them for state on their way to perfection 13-0 And that was the only time I ever attended a game in Ruidoso. JP Barta ran wild that afternoon! Ruidoso Police officers tried to get 1500 Bulldog fans to move from the home side to the Artesia side. Got to the game and the visitor's side.....Artesia's side was completely full, not even room for one more person.........SO, my 12 yr old son and I walked over and sat on the Ruidoso side with 1500......or so......other Bulldog fans. Probably 45 minutes before kick-off a couple of "Ruidoso's Finest" came and stood in front of where we were sitting, and told us that all Artesia fans had to move to the Artesia side.....with bullhorns! Like I said, Artesia's side....visitor's side.....was COMPLETELY full......no way 10 people would be able to find a seat over there, much less 1500. The cops must have stood down there on the track for a full 10 minutes telling us that we had to move! NOBODY budged.....we just laughed at them. I mean, what were they going to do......arrest all of us??? They finally gave up and left. Ruidoso stadium visitor side bleachers were absolutely PATHETIC!!! Seated 500-800 at most. WAY smaller than Lovington's visitor's side.

How crazy is it that Raton, Tucumcari, and Onate all used to be in the same class? Wow

We lost to them in the playoffs in 1986, however they may have lost to them in 1988 the year after TW Harvey left. I can’t remember that coaches name The coach you are thinking of was Barry Coffman. He was here for one disastrous year, then he was gone. He came to Artesia from Belen I believe. He wasn't prepped to coach big time football. Barry Coffman was a very capable coach. He coached Bloomfield to the state title game in the 70s. He was successful at Dumas TX. He was also successful at Aztec. Beat Artesia in the Quarterfinals of the 81 playoffs while coaching Aztec. That's why he was hired.
He tried to put in the wishbone here. Phipps had scrapped it at some point in his career after being highly successful. Coffman only stayed 1 year. He had a >500 season here with some talent. Cooper had an even worse season the next year. When you try and change the culture of a program it takes time no matter how talented the team may be. Had Coffman stuck it out I'm sure he would have done well also.
Barry is a Clovis guy who played for Eastern. His son is a defensive coordinator for a big school in Texas. Not sure which one. By the way I think he also won state at Hagerman.
Ruidoso has a small stadium. We know that. One of the best state game atmospheres and weekends ever was the 98 title game. Lots of Artesia fans in Ruidoso for the weekend. It was a great weekend getaway.

Roswell will have its way if Artesia defense doesn't get better.

Kind of glad my wife is sick. The defense is the worst in Artesia in a long time. This is Ruidoso we are playing and we cannot stop them. The schemes are the worst.
Goddard just dominating Lovington. Gonna be ugly the rest of the season for the Dogs.

Lovington maybe a little up and down, how they only beat Alamo 29-22 seemed odd to me. Still like them in 4A though, they got the talent, just need to be consistent week in and out, be easier against 4A comp I'm sure.

I’m totally numb as to how unmotivated and flawed our defense is. We will struggle through district. We better learn how to kick field goals. 6 points don’t add up to 7 if our defense isn’t going to hold. We have to score to win. That is a very dangerous place to be.

Clay will set tons of records this year or at least get close. We have to score to win.

we have.
82-0 against Taos in 2007. I was at that game. forgot about that one. It was so bad, a lineman threw a Touchdown for Artesia lol.

Defense at some point has to be addressed. This cannot be the acceptable standard.
