Thinking about this game some. I was out there somewhere 7 years old Boy, the details I remember about this game! I was there and I was only 29 yrs old. Ended in a 0-0 tie. Lovington honored Eric Fitz during pregame, he was the Lovington QB that started the season as their starting QB, only to suffer a traumatic brain injury earlier in the season, collapsed on the sideline was in a coma for at least a week and almost freakin' DIED! Eric was at this 1987 state title game on the sidelines in a wheelchair. Another thing I remember about this game......I got there late and the visitor's side was filled to the max with Bulldog fans.....looked and looked for a seat but there was nothing! So I made my way over to the Lovington side to sit with the multitude of Bulldog fans that were already seated in the south end of the Lovington side bleachers. I was making my way up the aisle all decked out in Bulldog gear. On my way up the aisle I encountered a Lovington fan and his wife who were seated right next to the aisle. They couldn't have been more that 30 yrs old......about my age actually. Anyway, as I am making my way up the aisle so sit with the other Dog fans who were already sitting on the Lovington side.....this dude reaches out and grabs my arm really firmly, and says......"Bulldog fans sit on the other side, we don't want you here" or something to that effect. Wouldn't have pissed me off so bad except for the fact that he grabbed my arm! He actually had the balls to put his hands on me! So I looked him dead in the eye, and said while pointing to his significant other the whole time..........."Don't make me embarrass you in front of your MOM! Well, that REALLY set him off, and I could tell it hurt her feelings too.........he called me every name in the book........"That's my WIFE you sorry MF'er!" You know how women hate it when somebody thinks they are older than they really are, lol. Felt kind of bad dragging his significant other into the whole thing, but did I apologize? NOPE! I figured that's what he gets for being a "d!ck". And that's what SHE gets for being married to an A-HOLE like him, lol. Am I confused, or did an Artesia fan pass away in the bleachers at this game?

Offense did their thing last night…… athletes were athletic. Ball security still a bit of an issue. But we sure looked fast!!
Defense was most impressive. Playing without multiple starters in a slightly new look. Really stepped up when they had their backs against the wall. Really like the sophmore #59. Hell of a motor…… works well with our 2 animals inside (#41/#34).

My son #43 Josiah Rodriguez made his pops smile after this hit HIT

No, you are not confused. It was Frank Eberle, he and his wife Ruth lived just right around the corner from my wife and I at 1507 S 17th. I was shocked, did not find about it until the next day. He was retired from the post office. Ruth has since passed away....don't remember when.

I always find this game fascinating. I wonder if you asked kids that are playing now if they knew artesia tied with Lovington for a state title in 87 I bet they have no idea, at least that's my hunch.

Yeah. If I remember right, back then, NMAA rules said that if a state-championship football game ended in a tie, even a scoreless tie like this one, there would be NO overtime -- the teams would be declared co-state champs. Which meant no red (runner-up) trophy would be presented -- NMAA brass would present the blue trophy to one team, then take it back and present it to the other team.
This had not been a problem for years, apparently, since a state football game in New Mexico ending in a tie was extremely rare.
The OT rule (four shots from the 10-yard line) had recently been installed but only was used for district games. Needless to say, N.M. prep football coaches, because of this 1987 game, pressured the NMAA to put the OT rule in for state-title games as well.
At the time, I wondered why NM didn't do what Texas prep teams did -- use penetrations as the first tie-breaker, first downs as the second tie-breaker, or total yardage (I think) as the third. I was told that Texas UIL rules were different from NM rules.

Dogs played good. Not many mistakes, penalties or otherwise. One fumble early on, stuff happens. Defense looked solid. What gets me is that Lovington has a halfway decent offense but doesn't play them both ways. Seems odd for a 4A school. Oh well, we'll see how they do against portales.

Greathouse had 285 receiving yards in the game, that's good enough for 2nd most in a game. David Patterson #1 with 329 against Hobbs in 93

I am sure the coaches are emphasizing those things this week. Offensively I think we did a great job getting the ball out fast and letting our athletes go to work. Still a few issues on reading coverages that should get cleaned up in the next few weeks. Our QB seems smart and will get it down with more experience. Defensively we got hit in the mouth early but responded well. Great adjustments by the defensive staff switching up coverages and fronts frequently. I love it when an air raid offense like Lovington can’t get comfortable. It will be interesting to see how we come out first quarter against Santa Teresa.
