While I agree greathouse was good to many fumbles to be classified as one the best in my book, he is not of the David Patterson/ Scott Poe types that hardly dropped any balls that were thrown anywhere near them. Those two guys were elite level slots and as far as slots go we have a couple of sophs that are gonna push any upperclassmen for playing time.

LB’s should be decent….. Wesson is a returning All State Middle Linebacker. Josiah Rodriguez is being moved down from safety / undersized but a great tackler and very aggressive. Grant Johnson is the new up and coming stud / Good size and great work ethic (Older brother was an animal a couple years ago at MLB). May be someone else to find as well… I’m hearing there might be a tweek in the defensive scheme. We lost all 4 starting D-Lineman; but Grantham will be an absolute nightmare for offensive linemen. New position coach here. DB’s will be the defensive strength- Jesse Armendariz, Jaron Watkins, David Hammond, Phillip Finley all have loads of experience and are proven players. New position coach here. O-Line has 3 very good returners, which is a great start. Ricky Armendariz will be dominate on the left side. But the other two spots might take a few weeks to figure out the best fit. New position coach here, trying to replace a legend (Bowden retired). LeRoch is a next level, tough as nails runner. He will shine as the feature back in 2023. Estrada at Quarterback is on pace to be a top 5 all time passer in school history. Saiz and Juan Diego Duran are proven serious threats to score at any time from the outside receiver spots. Very dangerous. Inside slot is the huge question mark. Not a single senior in the bunch. Couple kids looking for playing time that came up in the system playing at different positions are trying to learn at warp speed. My opinion this is the make/break spot for the 2023 season. Will the young bucks develop by playoff time? This is a very difficult position to pick up on the fly, and vital to the offenses’ success! Coach Olivas is taking a smaller role in the program (this year), for personal reasons. His intensity and what he does for the special teams unit is irreplaceable. Side Note: Class of 2024 notable losses…. Peyton Greathouse -(arguably one of the best receivers ever at Artesia)- moved to Tennessee this year. Chase Bogle- (D1 prospect at LB)- moved to Texas in 9th grade. Jaden Kennard - top receiver in the class through middle school, moved to Texas in 9th grade. Currently a receiver at Lubbock Cooper. Also 2 starting offensive linemen and 1 starting linebacker moved to Texas during the Covid shutdown so they could continue to play athletics. Never got any of them back, and all have found success elsewhere! Could have actually been one of the best Artesia teams ever! Josiah Rodriguez weighed 135 and 5 ft 7, he is faster now at 5 ft 9 and 162lbs, he’s wearing #22 like his old man instead of 43 this year

Definitely don’t disagree with your post…… I feel like I could name several slots to put against Greathouse (even recently: Braxton and Duff). But statistically- even an average year would have put him at the top of school career records.

Definitely has the most potential for a breakout season. But still young and unproven. Diego Lopez is a tough kid looking to make an impact. Definitely a football player mentality, but also young and unproven. Galindo and Isaac Casarez are both exceptional athletes working in from other positions. Both have a boat load of talent and ball skills- but it’s uncertain if they can pick up the position. Other than Quarterback- Slot is likely the most difficult position (mentally) in the Artesia offense. It’s a lot more than just knowing the plays and catching the ball. Bottom line: every other Bulldog team in recent memory has had a senior or two that was at least part of the rotation the previous year. Conn got a few snaps last year as a sophomore- but this is by far the most inexperienced group I can remember. I’m not saying they won’t get the job done (or even exceed all expectations)….. I just think that for us to get to #32 this year, someone from this position needs to emerge as an All-State type player.

By the way….. I’d bet on US every day of the week!! Go Dogs!! I surely hope a couple out of those 4 or a sophomore perhaps can come up to speed to have a productive offense. I played safety my whole football career and for TW Harvey, where we counted on a strong defense and a good ground game. I’m not to savy on the spread offense and the work that’s put into those positions such as the slot. As you said I hope they can improve under Maupin after losing PG.

.............Peyton Greathouse -(arguably one of the best receivers ever at Artesia)- moved to Tennessee this year............. SO.....I wonder which high school in Tennessee just hit the football jackpot with this guy? Would kinda like to follow him his senior year even though he is now out of state. Anybody know, or can anybody find out?

Correct…. He’ll find out real quick how he stacks up…., First game is against Oakland (Murfreesboro, TN). 3X defending state champions and #1 program in Tennessee over the last decade.

Thanks guys! Hopefully he will work his way into a starting position pretty quick, depending on how stiff the competition is for positions at Independence HS. Would really suck to transfer to a new school out of state your senior year and never see the field.

Good deal, looks like he's remaining in Artesia haven't seen his house for sale lol, hard to imagine him sitting around, he looks to be in great shape as always.
The NMMI 7 on 7 today.
Looks like we went up against Roswell the other day as well, anyone know how we performed against specifically Roswell High?

The sophomores also won their division beating St. Mikes, Artesia 2, Eunice and Robertson. Bulldog football is looking strong!
