2023 Artesia-Carlsbad Football History The Artesia Bulldogs come into the 2023 season having won their 31st State Championship last year with an 11-2 record. MaxPreps lists the Bulldogs as the 137th winningest football program in the country with a 711-354-33 record. That 711 win record dates from 1920, the Bulldogs started playing football in 1909. The record from 1909 is 724-374-45 which would put the Bulldogs at the 111th winningest football program. 630 of those wins have come since 1950 an average of 8.75 wins a season. The 37 seasons that were played between 1909 and 1949 they won 94 games for an average of only 2.54 wins a season. The Carlsbad Cavemen have another new head coach, Cale Sanders, the former Goddard and ENMU player. Carlsbad was 5-6 last season. They made the playoffs, but were defeated in the first round by Farmington. The first game played against Carlsbad was in 1913 a 32-0 win. There have been at least 112 games played in the Artesia-Carlsbad rivalry. Over the last twenty games Artesia has won 13 to Carlsbad’s 7 including the 30-27 come from behind win last year. For the 71 games played in the Eddy County War from 1950-2022, the record is almost dead even at 34-35-2. The Artesia-Carlsbad games usually have the largest crowds of the season. The 1970 game at Bulldog Bowl the crowd was estimated at 9,000, a 19-0 win for the Bulldogs. A 7-7 tie in 1958 in Carlsbad had an estimated attendance of 8,500. The 1950 game, a 14-7 loss in Carlsbad, the crowd was estimated at 10,000. Even Morris Field usually had 5-6000 people in attendance for the rivalry games. Many other games over the years had 5-8,000 fans. Overall Record Artesia: 48 wins, 52 losses, 10 ties (no scores were found for games in 1915 & 1916) Thanks to Richard Evarts for the Graphic and the History. Multiple construction projects? Heavens! Are they actually expanding the "visitors" side of the stadium?

IT'S CARLSBAD WEEK!!! So glad football is back on Friday nights and ready to head to Carlsbad to see our dogs chew them up and spit them out. 1st year head coach Cal Saunders is going to have his hands full with this fast and experienced defense. Our offense will do good yes, we do have some underclassmen in the slot, but Artesia always finds a way to move kids around and get this best of them. we did good things this summer in the passing games so hopefully that will continue losing Greathouse was a big blow (even with his fumbling problems and attitude), but that kid would of broke every receiving record in the book for us, but we have some young talent i would like to see what Ethan conn has to offer. Frankie Galindo in the slot as well we are definitely not lacking speed.
prediction: 35-14 BULLDOGS
WHAT ARE YALLS PREDICTIONS ON FRIDAY NIGHT???

I’m hoping our D-Line can handle the run. Offense will take a little bit of time to figure out who rises to the occasion and become dependable weapons. A little worried that we showed our hand so much during the summer work outs. Our 7v7 schedule saw 3 contests vs Carlsbad, 2 contests vs Lovington, 2 vs Hobbs, and 6 vs Roswell. Im not comfortable giving our opponents that big of a preview.

YES WITH CAL BEING AN OLD GODDARD ALUM HE'S USED TO RUNNING, RUNNING AND RUNNING BUT WE FACED CARLSBAD LAST YEAR AND THEY HAD SOME REALLY BIG RUNS ON US THAT WERE PRETTY COSTLY ONE THAT SHOULD HAVE SEALED THE GAME FOR CARLSBAD. ON ALL THE 7 ON 7'S WITH MOSTLY THE SOUTHEAST TEAMS ON OUR SCHEDULE IT COULD BE GOOD AND BAD I KNOW MAUP DIDNT SHOW TO MUCH HES PRETTY SMART ABOUT THAT AND OUR COACHING STAFF DOES THE BEST JOB AND ALWAYS HAVE ON MAKING ADJUSTMENTS IN GAME AND BEING SUCCESSFUL.

I don't expect much from Carlsbad, they've always had talent but never could keep a good coach. They may score a junk time TD. The dogs have really shut down the Goddard style run offense the past several years. I'm going with 42-7 Bulldogs.

No score from me, I like our chances but it's a rivalry game after all, anything can happen. Last year was proof.

If you look at the scrimmage from last wekk (Carlsbad/Lovington), they had one long run a 59 yard sweep from Mendoza ( good speed , not as fast as last years running back , but had about 600 yards rushing last year). They had some completions passing vs Lovingtons sub par pass defense compared to the Bulldogs D. The mendoza running back is not a big kid, if our D recogize their assignments, fill their gaps, etc. we should perform well. Carlsbad has around 8 or 10 seniors, they won’t stop Nye and his trio of WR’s Saiz,Galindo, Duran and Slots : Conn, Lopez, Beuagard. Plus Leroch running the rock, very often. I think the Cavemen will play with high emotions but I don’t think they’ll be there battling in the 2nd half. However; like Agent Orange eluded to it’s Carlsbad and this is their Championship. Ps: I think Carlsbad has taken the last 4 out of 5 last meetings with the Dogs. Let’s go Dogs

Not sure who you are talking about, but if there are any Bulldog players that have roots in Carlsbad it's because they decided that they would rather play for a team that has CLASS! Once they get a taste of the Glory that is Friday Night Lights in Artesia there is no going back. They know that NOTHING about Carlsbad football can compare.

Not sure which ones, but like I said, Carlsbad has always had talent. But they've never had a coach that's been good, or stuck around. I went to every home game in 2017 and was blown away by their raw talent but awful coaching.

I'm amazed you guys have no clue, I won't mention names but they are the studs on your team. Open Enrollment is a joke and abused in this state for athletic gain.
Crispydad save the holier than thou attitude you have in Artesia, enjoy your wins and titles with hired guns, just know those aren't Artesia kids. Has Carlsbad ever won a baseball title with an Artesia kid? hell no, we groom our own talent.

Say what you need to say captain cavemen, you can never comprehend it nor accept, it because you haven’t lived it. You are irrelevant to all this anyway

You win some you lose some, that’s life captain. The 3 years I played Varsity football and baseball for Artesia, we lost all 3 football games and withe the tournament s and doubleheaders we probably won 2 out of 10. However; we won state in baseball and football during those 3 years. We never held on to any animosity towards Carlsbad, we watched your cartoon every Saturday morning and our ace pitcher Mr Chavarria and I went to your prom with yall’s baseball manager s. Don’t sweat it 😎
