Amarillo High is 5AD1 and ranked #246 in Texas. Not a good look when the #1 6A team in NM loses to a 5A TX team ranked #246. I’d like to see Artesia pick up a game against a quality TX 4A or 5A team to see where they stand. Perhaps Lubbock Estacado or Lubbock Cooper, or Graham or Seminole. Those teams aren’t ranked in the top 10 in TX, but they’d be a good challenge for Artesia. Canyon or Randall would be the best bet. Cooper or Coronado are hit and miss. They should schedule Permian so Artesia can beat them on the road. That would be pretty funny to see. Calpreps says that this is the year that could happen. How awesome would that be? Catch Permian on a down year and they get beat at home by a NEW MEXICO team. Mojo would never recover, lol........... neutral field [2023] Artesia (NM) 35 (60%), [2023] Permian (Odessa, TX) 31 (40%)

I think Artesia would probably run away with the game. The fans in Odessa would be very scared and confused to see a team from a New Mexico clobber them at home.

I have been a fan of Permian football since 1977....or at least been aware of them since then. 1977 was my second year of college in Abilene TX, and my college room-mate was a Permian grad. Went to Shotwell Stadium in Abilene in '77 and watched Permian play Abilene High Eagles. Permian ran away with that game. Also drove to Odessa in the early '90s.........1991 maybe......to watch Alamogordo play Permian. Permian beat Alamo 35-12, Alamo was the #1 ranked team in NM at that time. Seen the movie Friday Night Lights probably 20 times, my favorite football movie. I have kept up with Permian every year since the late 1970s. So yeah, I'm very familiar with the whole MOJO thing. Would be nice if we could schedule them and beat them on a "down year". But when MOJO was at their peak I would want NO PART of them. We actually did a home-and-home 7 on 7 with Permian back in the early '90s. We throttled them in Odessa in the first 7 on 7, then the following year they beat us in Bulldog Bowl.

Talking with my friend and historian Richard.
The Last time the Bulldogs played in Texas was in 2000 against El Paso Riverside a 40-35 Bulldog Win
The last Texas team we played was El Paso Cathedral in Bulldog Bowl in 2011 a 48-3 Bulldog Win.

Duncanville and DeSoto are both struggling to find games in first 3 games of season. Of course they are loaded with D-1 talent and are National Powerhouses

Those 2 are for sure out of our league.
I thought Denver City might be interesting to play not that far either, just down the road from Lovington.
The wildcats play them.
That year Lovington played us for Homecoming in 2021 the 68-56 game in which Jake Barerra set the single game rushing record. The game before Denver city beat Lovington 35-7, I would have love to seen that game film and how they held them down. THe Lovington team was loaded they had a few games where they got held down though just always wondered how.
Anyways. They couldn't be any worse than what Santa T and Belen are right now, and only an hour and half down the road.

Denver City, is definitely more realistic. Along with maybe a mid-tier El Paso school. Those are teams we could play with on a fairly even scale. Seminole would be fun too…. I would love a Seminole game, to replace Cleveland. Cleveland is just too much for Artesia (obviously- we’ve NEVER beat them). Seminole would be a better game against a consistently very good team that we would have a chance to beat on occasion. Seminole also travels well- would make for a great atmosphere. As far as the BIG Texas schools…..’Permian, El Paso Franklin, Midland Lee etc…. Artesia wouldn’t stand a chance. NM football isn’t in the same universe. Maybe at one time, this was realistic- but not anymore. Cleveland (the most dominate program in NM just lost to a mediocre Amarillo school) ; Roswell got a wild hair two years ago, and thought it would be a good idea to play Dumas. They got completely embarrassed. Yet the Coyotes were good enough to win our District that same year and secure a #3 seed in the playoffs. Unfortunately my point will be validated in a couple weeks vs Cleveland (a team that wouldn’t be ranked in the top 200 in TX). As much as we can hope for a different outcome- they are just significantly better than us every year. Bigger Stronger Faster… We have been highly praised for beating 3 terrible teams so far this season…. We are not ready for Cleveland. And in my opinion we have not improved at all offensively since the start of the season. Galindo has been the shining star so far. Estrada has to cut down on mistakes and find a way to get everyone on the same page. Receivers are not even close to previous years pass catchers as a whole. Route running is average at best (other than 3 and 4 routes)- those are pretty dang good. The “outs” are awful, everything is rounded - no angles what so ever…. Add in about a 10% drop rate, and it’s not hard to see the problems ahead. Route running will have to improve leaps and bounds for our receivers to get open against Cleveland’s athleticism. I agree we are a pretty dang good NM 5A football team, and probably always will be. We have the best coaching staff in the state!! Defense has been excellent, and deserves all the accolades they are getting to this point. Like I said Cleveland is just a different animal, and hard for us to match up. But we will have our way with the other teams on our schedule and throughout the playoffs, with the exception of Roswell. They are very good…. And hungry!! I hope our offense can meet the challenge- because they are a huge hurdle to get over for #32.
