I watch classics football of the bulldogs. That is how I relax. I recently watched them play in the 1998 game against Ruidoso Warriors on proview and noticed defensive end number 77 for the 'dogs. Huge player who had two guys blocking him. I'd like to know who the young person was, does anyone know?

A Marc West Story,
We were issuing equipment at Artesia JHS, when I got a call from Larry Ray, who was the Director of Student Services at the time. He told me to come down to the office and meet a new 9th grader who was registering and wanted to play football. I walked down to the office and here is this BIG, good looking kid, Marc. I asked if he had played football before, and he said, "I was too big, they wouldn't let me." !!!! I told him that I thought he could play for us.
We went back to the equipment room, and I tried to find a helmet for him...couldn't get one on because of his haircut. (kind of a behive). I told him that he would have to get a haircut in order to get a helmet on...next day he showed up, and we got him in equipment. We started him at defensive tackle, and the first day of pads, ran 432 at him, whoever our starting guard was blew him up. We ran that play a few more times that day, and he learned quick. (Side note, Coach Chaney was drooling when he saw Marc the first time, and I think I popped Tommy's baloon when I told him that Marc was going to play Offense. I was kidding, but Chaney didn't appreciate the humor). I told Coach Henderson about Marc, saying we might have a player....Cooper came to one of our games, and said something about not many 9th graders fillling a uniform like Marc. He was a lot of fun to coach.
Coach Chaney, any comments?

Kid could go! Don't know a thing about him but I thought he had to be Reggie Whites offspring. Wondered if Chambers had hired Reggie to preach somewhere. Oh, and, He could throw a shot put a little bit too.

Too big to play football? Now that make any sense? I wonder what he is doing now? Offense? I am glad he played defense. He reminds me of the kid who played in the movie Blind Side.

A trivia question about #77..........
Not a question about Marc West, but a question about the history of the #77 in general.
Who was the biggest Bulldog to ever wear #77? I thought I knew the answer to that question, but I was wrong! I had thought that the biggest guy to wear #77 for the Dogs played on the 1974 team. That would have been Johnny Miller. Johnny Miller was just 1 year older that me. I graduated in '76 and Johnny graduated in '75. Back when we were in school Johnny Miller was the largest human being I had ever laid eyes on. A real monster. He went on to play for Wyoming for a few years.
Well, I was looking through the old rosters and I found a Bulldog who wore #77 who was even bigger than Johnny. And it didn't take long either, it was the first roster I clicked on! I stopped right there. Didn't even look at any more rosters, so there could be one bigger than the one I found. I may look later.
So the trivia question is.......who was the biggest Bulldog to ever put on the #77. And Charliedog, it WASN'T Johnny Miller. Yeah, I was surprised too.

If I had wore 77 it would have been me, oh you mean biggest not fattest lol.
I'll guess Edward Martinez 2005 listed at 6"3 283 although he was not listed near as big in 04, he was starting left tackle before my brother. McCaleb was 6'6 246 in 07.
I'd say it's gotta be one of them although I didn't go through all the years.

Actually, the one I found was on the 2008 roster........Kevin Willard...6-2....300.
Johnny Miller on the 1974 team WAS a big guy. I should know, I went to school with him, but I think his size has been greatly exaggerated over the years......and even exaggerated by some people on this site. I have heard him described as 6-7, 290. No way he was that big! The 1974 roster (Johnny's senior year) lists his weight at 252, and it doesn't give a height. I have an old newspaper article from the daily press that was done the week before the '74 State Championship game against Deming. In that article Johnny Miller is listed as 6-3, 255. I think what part of the deal is with the exaggerations is that up to that point he was probably the biggest Bulldog ever. THAT, and it has been 37 years. Time always adds inches and pounds. Legends always grow in stature over time. None of this is meant to diminish his abilities as an athlete. After all, he did play D-1 football for a few years. Just saying that he wasn't as big as people like to think he was. Still a big dude though!
Off on a side note......I couldn't help but notice that all of the sub-boards are gone. To tell you the truth I wouldn't mind seeing the OLD football board disappear, as long as the "Hall Of Fame" remained. The HOF is where all the good stuff from the old football board is anyway. But people were posting on the OLD football board in addition to THIS one. One football board is enough. Made it kind of confusing trying to follow 2 football boards........but I sure do wish that the baseball, basketball, track, and especially the Hall Of Fame would remain. I will miss those if they disappear.

If I had wore 77 it would have been me, oh you mean biggest not fattest lol....... Randall, I just ran through all of the rosters. Didn't take that long really, and guess what. You weren't even the biggest to wear your own #73. That would have been Andres Aguilar on the 2006 team. He beat you by 1 inch......and 1 pound. But there ARE a few rosters missing. Funny thing, that is based on his weight during his Jr. year. His Sr. year in 2007 he is listed 9 lbs lighter. Guess he lost some weight the summer before his Sr. year. But yes, you were the biggest SENIOR to wear #73.
