Thursday Night Sandia 21, St. Pius X 13 Atrisco 37, Albuquerque 0 Valencia 68, Taos 18 Mayfield 28, Chapin 27 El Dorado 26, Las Cruces 23 OT Friday Night Cleveland 49, El Paso Bel Air 12Clovis 20, Alamo 19 Portales 26 Robertson 7 Goddard 33, Rio Rancho 25 F Artesia 35, Lovington 14 Franklin 54, Onate 14 F Santa Rosa 33, Estancia 14 Moriarty 35, Bernalillo 0 Hobbs 24, Gadsden 21 Grants 50, Capital 0 Farmington 48, Gallup 8 La Cueva 16, Volcano Vista 6 Socorro 35, West Las Vegas 8 F Mora 56, Wingate 6 Dulce 55, Tohatchi 0 Fort Sumner 32, NMMI 0 Menaul 58, Reserve 12 Tucumcari 21, Hatch Valley 7 St. Michael's 42, Bloomfeld 8 Wilcox AZ, 24, Lordsburg 6 Carlsbad 28, Roswell 24 Hot Springs 34, Tularosa 6 Aztec 40, Los Lunas 27 Raton 38, Clayton 25 Piedra Vista 66, Santa Fe 26 When I saw this score something just jumped out at me. I had a hunch about something so I checked it out at www.danfordsports.net/index.htmlI was right! Cleveland is the only Albuquerque area school in recent history to ever venture into the State of Texas. Cleveland is not technically in Albuquerque, that's why I said AREA. Last nights game was played in Rio Rancho, but LAST year Cleveland did travel to El Paso to face Bel Air. I know for a fact that Albuquerque schools NEVER play out of state. APS officials won't allow it. And Rio Rancho High School has never gone into Texas, I checked! APS officials not allowing Albuquerque schools to travel out of state is a shame. I think that La Cueva and Manzano and a few others would give some of the top teams in Lubbock and Amarillo a run for their money. Not sure how long the out-of-state ban has been in effect. I will have to do some checking on danford.com to see if there were any games between Albq schools and Texas schools back in the 50s and 60s. Just one more thing, are we absolutely sure about this score? Because MaxPreps says Bel Air 56, Cleveland 45. www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/DXCNCGaayU-xBLgLLHL3sw/cleveland-storm/football/schedule.htmTotally different outcome, and totally different score.

I was a little surprised by the Carlsbad-Roswell score. I knew Roswell had improved but I thought this was supposed to be a killer year for Carlsbad.
I was kinda surprised by Clovis 20, Alamogordo 19.
Of course, it is the first game of the year so you just never know what can happen.

Roswell had their chances, a fumble recovery that would had scored 6 but the officials blew an the whistle early, and Roswell did recover the ball. Missed twice inside the red zone. Once the TE missed on an option pass right threw his hands the second on a field goal try. Roswell shot themselves in the foot but had their chances to win.
CHS survives Coyote comeback in openerTurnovers, penalties prevent Cavemen from pulling away after tight first half By Dan Kukla Current-Argus Sports Editor Posted: 08/27/2011 12:59:21 AM MDT
Click photo to enlargeRunning back Eric Galindo plows forward through the Roswell defense during Friday s 28-24...«1»CARLSBAD - Carlsbad never trailed in Friday night's opener but they never felt comfortable either. Turnovers and Roswell quarterback James Singleton made sure of that.
The Cavemen needed an interception in their own territory on the Coyotes final drive of the game to seal a 28-24 victory over a team they beat 34-6 last season.
"On a positive note we won a football game," head coach Ron Arrington said. "It was way more dramatic than we wanted it to be."
Roswell took over on its own 23-yard line with just under a minute to play and a slim four-point deficit. A pass to Jacob Sedillo moved the Coyotes to the 43 and drew loud cheers from the Roswell crowd - so loud, in fact, that it seemed to negatively affect its own players on the field. As the band banged away on its drum and the fans roared all the more, miscommunication between Singleton and his center led to the ball being snapped when he wasn't even looking.
RHS recovered but moved all the way back to the 23. What looked to be a rally killing mistake, however, was quickly overcome when Singleton hit wide out Richard Medrano 35 yards down the field and into striking distance. Only an interception by Carlsbad's Kyle McInroy allowed the Cavemen to escape with a victory.
"A little bit too close for comfort," said CHS sophomore quarterback Rodney Holcomb, who could do nothing but watch everything unfold from the sideline.
"It was scary," added running back Eric Galindo. "I was nervous. I was just hoping
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Advertisement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- the defense would pull through for us and they did." Carlsbad's offense looked tight in the first quarter and did not play with the high tempo or efficiency it showed during preseason scrimmages. A plodding 12-play touchdown drive capped by a one-yard QB sneak was sandwiched by a triplet of three-and-outs.
Not until late in the second quarter - a possession after Roswell tied the game at 7-7 on a 23-yard pass to Medrano - did the typically dynamic attack finally hit its stride. Holcomb and running back Dillion Caddell each ripped off runs of 17 and 34 yards on consecutive third and longs to sustain the drive that ended with a 14-yard sweep into the end zone by Galindo.
"The line blocked beautifully on the stretch and there it was - a big ol' hole," Galindo said of the play.
CHS then stretched its lead to 14 with just 31 seconds left in the half when an out-route to receiver Jered Meek turned into a 51-yard sprint to the end zone.
Carlsbad began the second half with an onside kick attempt that nearly worked. But Roswell recovered and worked the short field into three points with a 25-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to 21-10.
Galindo broke off a 22-yard run and the Cavemen offense looked to be rolling along quite nicely when a fumble by Holcomb on a quarterback scramble brought everything to a screeching halt. The mistake started an unsettling trend the rest of the way for the Cavemen, who typically dominated the second halves of games last season.
Roswell drove nearly 80 yards on 11 plays after taking over possession but came up empty when a 38-yard field goal try missed wide right.
Once again Carlsbad started marching with gains of eight, seven and 13 but once again they were halted by a fumble, this time by Galindo.
"Each time we turned the ball over we were really rolling," Arrington said.
The Coyotes strung together another impressive and this time the drive ended in the end zone. A roughing-the-passer call against the Cavemen on third-and-10 kept the possession alive and put the ball on Carlsbad's 13-yard line. Singleton and the Coyotes took full advantage as the quarterback took it in himself from the goal line.
"To be honest I underestimated him but I picked up on his speed real quick," CHS safety Richard Hill said. "He's sneaky. That's pretty much it."
With their lead cut to 21-18, the Blue and White needed a spark and fast. Galindo was happy to oblige.
On Carlsbad's first play of its ensuring possession, the speedster took a screen pass 51 yards to pay dirt. The pass from Holcomb soared a tad high but after the leaping back landed with the ball it didn't take long for him to find space and eventually the end zone.
"Jered Meek and Marcus (Arrington) had great blocks," Galindo said. "I just took it up the middle and one thing led to another. I saw the left tackle block perfectly. I saw the linebacker coming and I just cut."
"Eric's awful fast but we had some people blocking," Arrington said. "It's not one on 11. Good execution."
The play probably gave Roswell flashbacks to last season when they held Galindo under the 100-yard mark on the ground but gave up a 76-yard swing pass, allowing him to finish the night with 140 yards on three catches.
This time around Carlsbad's burner didn't put his typically gaudy numbers but even on an off night Galindo still managed two scores and 128 total yards on 15 touches.
Roswell answered two drives later with a nine-play scoring drive capped by a six-yard touchdown pass to Medrano. Singleton rolled right and found his favorite target in the back corner of the end zone, keeping the senior signal caller involved in all three of the Coyotes touchdowns.
"Our game plan was to contain 11 (Singleton) and the hitch and go because they're awful good at that," Arrington said. "They were pretty patient. They threw and caught the ball extremely well on that hitch. We made them be patient and they really were."
"He threw the ball awful well. We weren't really able to get a lot of pressure on him. I think we're concerned about the pressure we're not getting. We have to do a better job of covering up people in the secondary."
The Coyote scoring drive was once again helped by a key Carlsbad penalty. CHS was whistled for pass interference on the 13, setting up Singleton and Co. inside the red zone.
Roswell missed the point after attempt, keeping them four points back and needed a touchdown instead of a field goal on their final possession.
With less than three minutes left in the game the visitors tried an onside kick. The ball bounced off a player and squirted dangerously into no-man's land behind Carlsbad's first line of defenders but the Cavemen pounced on it before Roswell could recover.
CHS failed to run out the clock with a three-and-out, giving the ball back to RHS for one final shot at the win. First, however, Richard Hill needed to get off a punt from midfield with full pressure coming at him.
"Coach A told me one step and get that ball off," said Hill, who boomed the kick all the way to the 23. The punter showed how strong his kicking leg is last season but also showed he is not perfect with a short 15-yarder earlier in the game. A result like that or worse could have been fatal so the strong boot came up clutch.
Roswell didn't go quietly into the night as Singleton's 35-yard connection with Medrano made the Cavemen faithful squirm just a few tense minute longer. But McInroy's pick staved off the danger as Carlsbad escaped with the win.
"I think we've got a lot of coaching to do," Arrington said. "We've got a lot of work to do in obvious areas and then there's probably some areas we didn't see. Turnovers are obviously something we can't have. We tell our guys every day there's tryouts every day at four o'clock. We're going to have to find some guys that know what's going on It's a win. We'll take it as that. We'll darn sure learn from our mistakes and we'll move on."
Holcomb commented that he thinks Carlsbad's timing was off on offense, as well as the overall tempo. Arrington agreed that the team needs to play faster when in possession of the ball.
More importantly, the Cavemen need to stay in possession of the ball.
"We didn't play as well as we usually do in the second half," Arrington said. "We had them on the ropes. One of the things about great football teams is they don't let up. We still have to finish strong. We put the ball on the carpet a few times. Can't do it."
Hill commented that the defense needs more motivation and they can't let anybody get that close. According to Arrington, the Cavemen starters will get all the motivation they need this week in practice.
"We've got some good kids that want to be good," the coach said. "We've got some guys that are ready to step up and be competitors and take other people's place if they don't want to do it. This week we'll have a lot of competition as we always do."

Looking forward to seeing them in the bowl next week.

I figured Hobbs would put Gadsen away easy, looks like it was a pretty good game. Looking forward to seeing them in the bowl next week. I really like Cleveland in 5A crispy, I think they are the real deal. You know what surprises me about Cleveland, and what is really difficult for me to understand? Cleveland is a brand new school! They have only been around for 2 years. In 2008 Cleveland High School did not exist. Generally speaking, it has always been a rule of thumb that it takes a new school a while to get a football program up and running. Yet in 2009 (their very 1st year) they went 5-5. Last year, 2010 (only their 2nd year in existence) they went 9-2 and made the playoffs. THIS year, their 3rd year, depending on who you talk to they are one of the favorites to win it all! I would be interested in understanding what the dynamics are surrounding the Cleveland football program that have allowed it to become so VERY successful so QUICKLY. Why hasn't Cleveland had to go through the "growing pains" that other brand new schools have had to go through? In 1991 there was a brand new AAAAA school that was formed in El Paso TX. That school was Montwood High School. That very same year (1991) EP Montwood came to Bulldog Bowl in their 1st year of existence to face the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs destroyed Montwood 35-6. It took EP Montwood almost a DECADE to get their football program on track! So what is the deal with Cleveland's success? Anybody have any ideas? Any former coaches? Charliedog? I know that you have been out of coaching for a long time, but maybe you have some ideas. What can cause a brand new program to become so successful so quickly?

Cleveland had the benefit if getting half of rio ranchos students. It not like these kids have neve played ball before, and they have a seasoned coach who has won some games before. The school may be new, but it didn't take long to mesh. I attribute that to the coach. They also hired head coaches at least a year in advance for most of their sports. This gave them some time to set things up, scout etc...

Thanks CHS! Thanks Charliedog! I was aware that Coach Potter was at Cleveland and I was aware that he is a very successful and experienced coach. I guess I just thought that it would take more than an experienced staff to get a new program up and running since there are so many other factors involved. I guess getting half of Rio Ranch's students and experienced players didn't hurt either.
