Imagine what those big boys can do, especially number 75 if they were fit and fast?

Roswell 42 Grants 6 Grants wasn't that good to me i don't see how they beat Belen 55-20 and Los Lunas beat them 13-6. I think the Bulldogs going beat Los Lunas pretty good with their passing game. Grants doesn't usually make the playoffs do they? Maybe it was inexperience and travel that got them down?

It was 1985. Pirate Shaun Lewis intercepted a Bulldog pass in the end zone during overtime to seal the win for Grants if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, Shaun passed away that spring in a drowning accident. It was an exciting game. Grants went on to beat St. Mikes the next week and eventually lose to Silver in another tight game in the semis. That was probably one of the best Grants' teams ever. The Pirates were led by probably their most successful coach to date Joe Burton who I believe has coached some in the south after he left. Hot Springs??? Alamogordo??

Angryjack...........Just wondering if maybe you remember a guy by the last name "Hilliard" that was on that 1985 Grants team? Pretty sure he may have been a RB, but I could be wrong.

Crispy -
Don't recall a "Hilliard" on the 85 team. The Pirates stud running back was Stacy Corley who went on to play at BYU. They did have another running back who I know is related to the Hilliards, Howard Lackey. I graduated with his younger brother. He was also a real good running back, but was #2 behind Corley. That was my first experience at the bowl, i believe I was in 8th grade - Awesome memories for sure.

Joe Burton was our OC in Deming back in 1996 when I first started. He was also the OC in Silver when Coach Henson took over in 1991. Then he became HC in 1992 when Henson left. Great man Coach Burton is.

I was working for Halliburton in Brownfield and I worked with a guy by the name of Jesse Hilliard. Jesse was from Grants. Jesse only worked with me for 1 year, and that was in 1985. Jesse told me that he had a little brother who was a RB for the Grants Pirates. I always assumed that his little brother's last name was Hilliard, but I guess they could have been half-brothers. It's been so long ago that I don't really remember if he ever said. But I DO know for a fact that his little brothers first name was Howard. The reason I remember that is because Howard is also MY first name. I thought it might have been Howard Hilliard. Wow, small world isn't it?

rapid - No I was not at the game, listened to it on the radio. Well most of it.
C-dog - Not the HC, but am also AngryJack, Coach Hooper stole my name. LOL I'm Coach Werth (usually just go by kwerth on here but since it was a Grants thread) from PV - Graduated with Coach Hooper and played with him at Grants.
Crispy - I believe they were cousins but probably referred to each other as brothers as I believe they even lived together.

kwerth - you don't have anything to be angry about - you have won 6 straight softball state championships. Can't you find a better name than that? Something like Simers Nemisis or Jades' Pain in the Butt, Faulkenberry's Worst Fear or something like that? One of these days, were gonna get ya!
