The boys and girls state basketball tournaments now take place simultaneously? When did the NMAA start scheduling it that way, and why?
Was there something wrong with the girls state tournament being played one week, followed by the boys state tourney the next week?

The tourney has been this way for at least 15 years or even longer. It works out great. The girls start on Tuesday and the boys on Wednesday. You have 96 teams playing the week of the tourney. There are more paying fans for the whole week than there was with the combined different weeks for the girls and boys. It is the main bread winner for NMAA. 3rd largest event in the state behind the balloon festival and the state fair. We will be up there on Wednesday and stay the whole week. Then we will go back up there for the Ty Murray invitational. We love PBR and are happy i comes to the Pit every year. Great place to watch PBR.

Wow! Been like that for a long time then. That change sure killed the chances of NMSU ever hosting a state basketball tournament again.
Thanks for the info.

Even if the boys and girls were split Las Cruces would never get to host. The NMAA lost big time money the last time it was there. The central location allows for easier access to games. The member schools voted almost unanimously to never have it again in Las Cruces. Playing in an empty Pan Am doesn't help either. Their was a referendum to drop the number of teams in the state tourney from 16 to 12. That got shot down quickly by the board of directors for the NMAA. It's all about making money.

Bulldogs #5 take on Espanola Valley #1 tomorrow at 6:30 on at Dreamstyle Arena (the Pit) in the semifinals. Tall order coming up here in a just a couple of hours! Dogs playing the #1 team in the state! EV has only had one loss, and that was to Rio Rancho. Dogs have to play a perfect game! Now I know how Belen felt coming into the title gane versus Artesia. We are most definitely the underdog. But it CAN be done! Win tonight vs EV, and the championship game should be a piece of cake! Well, not really.........NEVER take any opponent lightly........but you knew what I meant.

if we do win it will be Artesia and Belen again lol.
Tall task like you said, I think we can compete/hang but like you said we are the underdog.
Go Dogs!

Man I thought we had them with about 30-40 seconds left tie game and we had the ball, figured we would get the last shot, we tried but they knocked it away down low and then Espanola had a little time and they had a chance and missed a 3 and then to overtime and we fall 63-59. Man Willingham had a beast of a game, he was the best player on the court for that game.
Good team and they had a good run, District Champs, District Tourney Champs, Final 4 Team. That's a good accomplishment.
I think the basketball program is trending up, maybe we can get a title again soon. There will be some good talent coming.
Great job players and coaches.

How good is Espanola Valley? Will it win the state title?
I remember hearing "Espanola" jokes when I was in Artesia.

I just know they only lost 1 game all year to Rio Rancho, looks like Rio is an average 6A team. Funny they beat them by 18 the 1st time then lost the 2nd time. Maybe just a bad night. They will play belen for state, they crushed them 73-47 midway through the season. Other than the loss to Rio, Artesia is the only team that's given them a game this year, their schedule doesn't seem overly tough to me, I think they are a good team, but we were every bit as good as them though, I think they just excuted a little better yesterday. Espanola Scores and Schedule.

Well Belen upsets Espanola 73-65 to claim state in Basketball at least.
I was looking over their roster, I didn't see 1 guy from football team that plays basketball, interesting I thought.

I believe the big guy was a football player, but he was the only one. Artesia exposed espanola's weekness and Belen took it to them.

One of Belen's starting Defensive ends was on the team. Belen has about 6 or 7 mutlisport athletes on the basketball team. I wish Taylor Null would have been there on Saturday to pick up his scholar athlete award in person. They did this at Halftime of the 5A State Championship game.
It was a great time and a great showing for our kids and school. Our team made the Semifinals and had a shot to win it in regulation. Coach Cooper Henderson was honored at halftime of our game with Espanola as he was inducted to the NMAA hall of fame. Taylor Null was the receipient of a scholarship from the NMAA. There was a lot more orange in the stands than usual this year. We are respected in basketball state wide.
So I guess as times go on still the good things about Artesia stay the same.
