The dogs have got to realize they have to play tough all 4 quarters. They were knocking Roswell out 21 to 7 in the semi finals last year at the half only to lose.

Lovington is a good team this year, so I want to give them some credit. Great O-line, with a solid RB and a 3-yr starting QB who is in the discussion for Mr. Football in NM. Now for Artesia, and some of the problems I see. The Bulldogs are a top 5 team in 5A and maybe peaking at the right time and getting things to bounce our way a bit, we may have a chance at the title. But I do think the overall program has slipped over the last couple years, where as Roswell and Los Lunas have revitalized their programs. And by the way, have you seen Goddards JV and freshman play? They are about to become a real big problem in 5A football for at least the next 4 years. Defense is a problem, big time. I can’t gripe too much about it, because I don’t know the solution. I won’t accept “we are young”, because that would indicate that last year we weren’t young on defense, and we were terrible then too. Our schemes against the power run teams are definitely questionable. I would rather see a Goddard QB catch us by surprise with a couple touchdown passes, rather than watching one guy run the same play over and over to the tune of 400 yards in one game. But that’s just me. The details is what I miss most, and to me is probably the source of our problems. Proper tackling, less procedure penalties, and special teams. Wow, where do I start with special teams? That used to be our biggest strength. We lack the details. Kickoff and return seem solid this year, but extra points are an embarrassment. Last year we literally had an all state punter, but was under siege every kick. This cost us the games in Hobbs and in Roswell. I have no doubt Artesia will continue to be a powerhouse, but I have a feeling the days of a state championship title every other year may have to wait awhile.

I agree Lovington is good they will win state in their class. I started in 5 or 6 games in 1974 my junior year defensive right end, until the coaches starting moving people around I was a back up the coaches put a senior in my place. Our defense that year only allowed 80-some points to be scored against us We went 13-0. My senior year in 1975 was my favorite year. we also had a tough defense

Great win for the Dog’s and an exciting game to watch. I knew they were the real deal. 52 points on us and 54 on Roswell is not a fluke. Some complain about our defense but go look at their stats against the defending state champs. Lovington will beat Goddard this week and remove all doubt about the quality of the team they are. Do we have room to get better? Yes. Are our Coaches frustrated a little? Yes. But bottom line is we won against a quality opponent. Expectations are always high in Artesia. Our district Is no doubt the toughest in the state. This week is our final pre-season game vs Ruidoso the next step in the road to #31. Roswell is loaded again this year. Goddard will be tough again this year. But, I believe we will rise to the occasion when the time comes. Keep the faith, quit nit-picking about what our Coaches do or don’t do and support the absolute best program in the State of New Mexico. Remember “ It’s great to be a Bulldog.” Go Dogs! Beat Ruidoso! Take State! We will be behind you all the way...
