I could go on all night on things that need improvement, but I don’t want to write a book. It was a total team loss. Penalties looked like Week 1, and we had lots of problems substituting. These fall on the coaching staff. Defense has become a constant problem. This Roswell team isn’t half as good as last years Coyotes and we struggled bad. To me, you have to take some chances when you know you are outmatched. Stop trying to cover everything all the time, cause in reality nothing is being covered with that approach. I would commit more to run stopping and dare Roswell (and Goddard) to throw more. It only took me a quarter to figure out that Roswell moves #74 from side to side and run behind him 95% of the time. This should be fairly easy to scheme against and be able to know what they’re doing most of the time. I thought offense was bad too. They looked good early, but once Clay threw his third INT, I felt like he was reluctant to throw down field and made things easy for their defense. I think he was confused in their coverage schemes and had a difficult time looking past the first read. Too much to fix this late in the season. Very sloppy for an Artesia team in district play.

I thought we would have been better. Having two weeks to prepare. Same defensive woes and the offense couldn’t pull them through tonight. We weren’t going to beat the refs either.
Coyotes had a great defensive scheme. Their defense looked like they mimicked what Cleveland did in the second half against us. Gets me thinking about if we should be playing teams like Cleveland and expose ourselves.
Coyotes offense was about typical. It’s hard to judge when our secondary makes 95% of the tackles. They cut through the front 7 like a hot knife through butter. This really makes me wonder when things are going to change defensively or are we going to just waste another great offensive year trying to figure things out. We made very few noticeable changes at halftime. Coyotes came out ready to kill in the second half.
Another thing, how in the world do receivers jump offsides so much?? I be never seen so many penalties.

Too many penalties is a lack of discipline and it falls on the defensive coordinator lack of disciplining.

Some kids just don’t have the mentality to come up and stick hard and don’t think it can be taught once they are in junior high. The mindset of a lot of the kids is to dream about being part of the Bulldog high powered throwing high scoring teams; therefore they are geared and coached to achieve that. I’m not sure if there is much emphasis or value placed on putting people on their rear ends when playing defense, swarming to the ball, etc. The sophomore class has a great offense not sure of the defense as I haven’t watched them play. My friends and I grew up watching the late 70s and first 4 years of the 80s teams of whom would make stops, stick the crap out of people and swarm to the ball. Subsequently that is how we played we were really pumped I can still hear the band playing We got the Beat while we were in the defensive huddle and how it made us feel to stop offenses. The 9th grade class that I watched play Carlsbad don’t have the ability to stick and arm tackle everywhere. The 8th grade has a great offense and a hard hitting defense. I’m not so sure what can be done except letting players like Braxton McDonald go both ways or even letting Clay Houghtling go both ways, like Shaun Standard did my sophomore year and I think Shaun Smith did it. Last night’s game was 21 to 21 in the first half I guess the coaches and the players have to find a way to win. I mean Clay leads the state in TD throws hopefully they can turn it around next week and in the playoffs to play smarter, with more poise, with tradition and heart. For those of us that have played and been a part of a team to win a blue trophy, we have had our days. This is about those boys on the field and their coaches we shouldn’t be bitching about or blaming kids or coaches. Much less if you didn’t play for the dogs or aren’t even from T town. Just saying. Go Dogs never give up

I went to graduate school in San Antonio, Texas and my son played in the 5A state championships in the 90's agaisnt Odessa Permian. He played for John Marshall Rams. Odessa beat John Marshall although they were smaller than the Rams, how? I remember they had "the eye of the tiger". They tackled much better. Roswell is not as good as they were last year but their coaches have them playing good football. They will take state again.

“The Coyotes ran 74 plays and gained 549 yards, with 399 coming on the ground ~Current Argus
A team almost has to try to give up 400 yards rushing. Need some changes on the defensive side of the ball. Doing the same things over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. 🤦♂️

I was NOT that impressed with Roswell's playing, but less so with the Bulldog's efforts. This Roswell team Could not have beat last years Roswell team!! Roswell does have two great players in #74 who opened up truck sized holes for #2,,AND he did it enough times to allow #2 to beat us. I heard all week long, how the Bulldog defense was gonna have to play at their best in order to stop #2,,,,SO,,looks like somebody forgot to tell our coaches. Years before, you used to be able to see the obvious change of tactics at half time, not so this year we're still doing the same things in 4th quarter that we started with. The Bulldogs just do not seem to swarm to the ball and too many standing around while the ball is still in play. I'm afraid we are in for a drubbing against Goddard because they were there looking. I am willing to wager that the was the smallest crowd to attend a Roswell game, 36 miles from home,,,,Sure hoping there is still some "force" left that we can grab to make the playoffs, but, I ain't wagering on that. OK,,Im done,,,,,gonna go watch some college ball,,,,

Teams now know the way to beat Artesia is to run the ball. Don't have to pass That ain't no lie! And this years Roswell High team is NO where as good as the Roswell High teams from the late 1980s....1987 to be specific....that had Mickey Reeves in the backfield. Can you EVEN imagine how bad Mickey & Company would have gashed this Bulldog defense last night? They would have had 800 yds on the ground alone! There is no explaining just how good Mickey Reeves was unless you actually saw him play, so I will not even attempt to explain it. Just suffice it to say that he was a 6-3 225 lb wrecking machine of a RB who was probably the most talented football player in the history of NM High School Football. And NO, I am not forgetting about Landry Jones, Scott Runyan, and DonTrell Moore. Mickey was better! But his career fizzled after high school because of injuries. Anybody else remember Mickey Reeves? I sure as hell do! Just glad we didn't have to contend with him last night.

Have a friend that used to coach Timmy Smith in Junior high. Timmy was not that bright, so he used to tell the QB just give the ball to Timmy and let him run. No planned play, just give him the ball. Timmy would run over people.

Yeah, bdogfan and Crisptsdad,,,I too remember those years of Timmy Smith and Mickey Reeves,,,,but I also remember how one Friday night in Bulldog Bowl,,,how the great defense of that year shut down that highly vaunted running back from Hobbs America,,,! I don't remember exactly how "Few" yards Timmy finally got for the night, but the Daily Press stated "Bulldog DEFENSE shuts down Hobbs Running Game",,,,UMMmmm,,did I say DEFENSE,, Talking about the daily Press,,,when they went belly up a couple of weeks ago, I called The Roswell Record and The Current Argus for home delivery,,,but I changed my mind,,,cause I hate reading about how very bad we are getting outplayed this year. Something is very wrong in this year's organization and I sure hope Cooper sticks to his farewell statement when he handed over the reins,,"I'm going to keep my eye on the Bulldogs program, and if need be, I will not hesitate to step in to help. I think it's time, Cooper, I think it's time.

So, when you say the ADP went "belly up a couple of weeks ago," what exactly do you mean?
Has the paper gone out of business?

I have not been back home for over 20 years. I’m going to see the Dogs when they play Alamogordo, regardless of how they playing. On Timmy Smith we hold him to 34 yards. That was 1981 great game plan by Coach Harvey. Cover the tight end and recover one on one and keep 9 in the box.

Mexican, that is what coach Lynn of the Roswell coyotes did. He had a good game plan to stop the number 1 passer and number 2 receiver in New Mexico. That's good coaching. Good defensive plan.
