Boys put away Chaparral the other day, they will play Carlsbad again Friday. Worth noting Lovington defeated Carlsbad the other day, Lovington has some good talent as well, that maybe our main comp for District this year.

Boys get the win against Carlsbad tonight in Carlsbad 57-51 in Overtime. That's a good win for us.

Boys 4-0 in District Play.
Portales on Tuesday and Goddard on Friday in Artesia. Try to sweep district play and the district title.
9th Grade boys play for the border conference championship today in Artesia, the current junior class won it a few years back first ever to do so if I recall correctly, got some basketball talent in the ranks. Be nice to get a state title again.

So the Bulldog Boys have sweep the competition in Regular season district play. They will play Lovington today in Artesia at 6pm for the District Tournament Championship. If they win should be looking at a top seed.
Girls basketball went winless in district play and the tournament, they go 9-17 on the year, 16 teams make the playoffs but I'm not sure if they will get in or not. I'll keep you posted.

Lovington upsets us at home in the district tournament championship, 53-46. Wildcats have went on the road and beat all 3 district teams at their home gym to claim the tournament.
Might knock us out of top 4 seed. See what happens tomorrow with the seeding at 6pm. No matter what Bulldogs will have a home playoff game next Saturday though.

How bad is NM basketball when Carlsbad doesn't win a conference game and lost in the first round of the conference tourney and they still make the playoffs....yikes

16 teams make the playoffs that’s too many in my opinion in this state, so bound to have some teams in that you would think wouldn’t qualify. 12 seems better to me, have 3 games to open the tourney on each side of the bracket.

I've never cared for the seeding format the NMAA went to. Always thought there was nothing wrong with the district champ and runner-up being the lone teams going from each district. You just needed a pre-playoff round (featuring nothing but district runner-ups) to thin it down to the final eight teams.

The schools set the playoff format and the schools set the criteria. The NMAA enforces those policies. The NMAA makes a ton of money off the state basketball tourney. Thus 16 teams. You have 96 teams in Albuquerque next week. It is a huge event.
The criteria leaves no doubt for who makes it. The old district champ and runner up sucks because some districts are loaded and some just plain suck. You want the best teams playing. The old way left great teams out and ok teams in. The state tourney has become where 12 seeds have won. It has made the state tourney even more popular cause of the Cinderella Story type teams. Having this type of seeding would have helped Artesia back in the late 70s and beyond. I can remember the 82 team having to play that BS preplayoff in Tohatchi. Should have never been played. Should have been played in Albuquerque. Then I think the next year we got runner up and a rotating BS playoff system left us out. Or something like that in those year. After that there has been Artesia teams that should have been in the playoffs and could have gotten hot and made a run.
This year Artesia has a shot at doing something great. If they can get by Grants then anything can happen.
By the way this year the 95 State Championship team will be honored at the State Tournament at halftime of the 4a state title game. They will hold a reunion also. kind of bittersweet is Bubba Jennings may not be able to make it. His team is one of the top teams in Texas and if they make their state tourney he won't be able to make it. His school is a 3a school in Texas. It was 25 years ago that this team won Artesia's first state title in basketball. My wife and I will be there. We love going to the state toutney and this year will be a treat watching how these young men look after 25 years of winning the state title. It feels like just yesterday we were there to watch that magical run. First coming from 10pts down with 52 seconds left in the game to beat Grants. Never forget the Grants fans cheering we want Academy then us beating them. Then Beating an Academy team that had James Borrego as their star. He is currently the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets. They had a run of state titles until we beat them that year. We did it again 2 years later.

Where is Jennings coaching these days? Bubba is at Peaster. My cousins son plays for him and I will watch them play Friday in Lubbock. Peaster was in Lubbock this summer for the Tech camp and I got to talk to Bubba a little bit.

Wasn't this the game they referred to as "The Magic Minute"

Yeah pulled out the win when it seemed to be game over. unbelievable comeback. Them and the group that followed, I always remember they loved the game of basketball, didn't just play when it was basketball season, they played year round, pickup games all the time around the neighborhood, open gym, gus mackers, it never stopped. The old gym, games just seemed full and loud intense. Ah memories It was magic alright.
