Clay is not walk on material. I don't know man. UNM thought that Landry was walk-on material.....remember? They wanted Landry to walk on at UNM, wasn't until the BIG TIME offers started rolling in that the Lobos decided to offer him late.

Talking to My cousin yesterday and his short time at nmsu, he was pwo at nmsu in 98, he went, a few scholarship guys quit the team, he asked if he could be moved to a scholarship player, they just flat out said no, no explanation, just said no. Different regime of course back then, he ended up breaking his wrist there, things just didn't work out, he left after 1 semester and went to Eastern on a scholarship and played 4 years.
I think Clay worthy of a scholarship too, my assumption is I think they can get in state kids like that and have them depend on lottery scholarship and other scholarship to pay for their education saves them a scholarship to hand out? just a guess

A walk on is a walk on is a walk on... all the fancy adjectives they put with it don't mean squat. They just don't let anyone come out so the non scholarship kids that are out there are all preferred, its not High School.

He told Rocky he was going to OU. Heck even Tech didn't offer him because Landry told them he was going to OU even if he had to walk on. Landry listed UNM as his second choice because he liked them a lot but never ever had any intention of going there and Rocky Long knew that.
Clay gets to prove himself. I know it's not a scholarship but he still has a shot to make it happen. If he works and studies the game then he has a shot. Patience will be a huge virtue.

Long road. Might have to fight just to get reps on the scout team and there won't be any protective jersey. He won't get reps in the fall and will be lucky to get reps even in spring ball. I only say this because he will find out real quick "He isn't in Kansas anymore"... Wizard of Oz reference.

I don't think Clay has decided yet, just announced he was offered to walk on, I've heard he may have some other options.

I know a kid from Carlsbad (2019 graduate) who Is at NMSU as a PWO in baseball..... Even his first semester (in the fall) he was put in the baseball team dorms (and baseball is a spring sport) So obviously he had yet to “walk on..... “. I think PWO does carry some weight....

Baseball might as well be D2 or 1AA football which is totally a different beast...Under NCAA rules, a Division 1 baseball team’s 11.7 scholarships can be divided between a maximum of 27 players on a 35-player roster, with all players on athletic scholarship having to receive a minimum of a 25 percent scholarship. That leaves room for eight walk-ons. My guess also is that any regular kid on campus could potentially be in the baseball dorm so I am not sure what a benefit that is. ALL D! football scholarships are full rides. It is either a full ride or nothing. They don't split the scholarships up like 1AA and D2 football has too either... the only weight that "preferred" carries is that they won't cut you the first year. And you don't just get to "walk on", if they don't want you there , you won't be there. So everybody that is a walk on is preferred. The preferred part is for the incoming Freshman that aren't there yet to I guess make them feel better about not getting a scholarship. I will repeat myself. If they want you, they will give you a scholarship. The "preferred" kid will get "zero, zip, nada" ... because it would be illegal by NCAA D! rules if they did. The only thing they get is the adjective "preferred"

I was under the impression for pwo, kind of going back to my cousin if a scholarship becomes available, you should be one of the guys at the front of the line to receive it. obviously wasn't true in his case I think it was in another thread but Foley Rio Rancho kid at NMSU is headed to UNM now.

Well,I put a lot of faith in Mr Nobody's statements as he has walked the walk. I just wish it was otherwise. I'm sure everybody here knows a certain ball player who they believe should of received a scholarship as Artesia has produced several who might of qualified for such. Unfortunately them dang recruiters and scouts can't see what we see,,,? LOL. I also firmly believe all in-state colleges that receive funding from in-state generated taxes should be required to award a certain percentage of their scholarships to in-state athletes.
