So you have to look at it this way. What are basing your decision on? Your emotions or are you comparing player X to the rest of the talent in the states that you are recruiting and your taking the very best player you can take. That's how you keep your job as a coach, that's how you put food on the table for your family as a coach. Trust me when I say schools like NM State and New Mexico have talent, they just find themselves in the position of playing teams with more talent. If you don't win a conference game at the D1 level, you don't make the playoffs or go to a bowl game. It's not High School football in New Mexico. You get FIRED!
So if you are a coach, you are trying to find the very best talent you can for the needs of your team.
There are only 125 D1 schools in the USA so if you start on a Saturday at QB, you are one of only 125 guys starting at your position playing the very best of college football. They are not just handing out scholarships. The road is HARD if you a scholarship kid and if you are a walk its off the charts difficult. Count yourself lucky if you see a few reps in spring. And with all that being said, a walk can make it... odds are stacked against you and the road is difficult.
There are also 123 other D1 schools out there and if the 2 in state ones don't think you can play, shop yourself around to the other 123 or at least to the ones that you see fitting into.... how bad do you want to play D1 football? All to often kids in the state think the world is flat and falls off at the border of the state.... sometimes at the edge of town.
Josh Allen, QB for the Buffalo Bills had one scholarship offer, the University of Wyoming. And I would say he is pretty talented, but that shows you how hard it is and the talent that is out there.
