Man, I just watched the intro to the 1980 game. Some darn good Bulldogs have passed away from that team. Some of them have been gone for a while. RIP Mr. Pitch..........who besides Keef Kimble, if you don't mind? I knew about Keef, he was killed in a drive-by shooting.....a case of mistaken identity.....some idiot gangsters shot up the wrong house, tragic to say the least. I don't know of any others besides Keef.

That's what I hate about the way he died, people hear how he died and they automatically jump to the wrong conclusions.

That 1978 state game was the first one I ever covered in Artesia. I remember it was played on a Sunday afternoon because it got snowed out from its regular Friday-night slot, and the field wasn't yet playable for a Saturday afternoon or night game. They had to wait one more day.
Barry Coffman was Bloomfield's head coach that year. The Bobcats had come to town earlier that same season for a non-district game, coming in undefeated and ranked first in the state in the AP poll. Artesia put it on 'em, 30-0, then got the Bobcats here for the state game.
Pretty amazing hair back then, players and coaches alike.

Wasn't 1976 the year of the infamous Artesia-Carlsbad Snow Game? Artesia and Carlsbad didn't play each other in 1976. That game was cancelled because of the huge brawl......RIOT......that happened the year before in the 1975 game. That was my senior year at AHS....the 1975 football season.......I graduated in 1976, but the '75 football season was my senior year. It gets confusing, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

The reason the 1976 game was cancelled is because of what happened the year before in Carlsbad........during the 1975 season. After the 1975 Artesia vs Carlsbad game.........a HUGE fight broke out on the field after the game was over. There was not an Artesia Bulldog or a Carlsbad Caveman that was not involved! Bulldog fans and Caveman fans were even fighting......literally FIGHTING........in the stands at the conclusion of the game. I was there and it was really ugly! Artesia fans and Carlsbad fans were even fighting in the parking lot after the game. If you were not there, consider yourself blessed.........because I WAS there.....and there is no way I can describe it to you if you weren't there.

I heard so many stories about that 1975 game in Carlsbad. Caveman head coach Dave Perini had his players "bowing" to the Artesia players afterward, and I think the Daily Press ran a photo of Perini and T.W. yelling at each other.
The 1976 rematch in Artesia -- which Bulldog players and fans were drooling over in anticipation -- wasn't played because of -- allegedly -- a snowstorm, and Carlsbad apparently didn't want to risk driving up and back on icy 285. Gee, I wonder why?
That's when I first learned of the intense . . . uh . . . feelings involved in this rivalry.
John Gunderson had a field day with a few cartoons back then.

Rick I had to sit next to TW that entire Friday Night and weekend. The expletives I heard in that period may still be a record. After this game the bumper stickers BEAT CARLSBAD EVERY CHANCE YOU GET came out. Meaning if they show up beat them.

And I bet he didn't use terms like Oh, my gracious goodness or Heavens to Betsy, either.
And I saw many of those bumper stickers, even long after the game. Didn't know they were spawned by the 1975 contest.

I have a cap that commemorates the 1975 game between Artesia and Carlsbad. I bought it a few years ago at Rugged Trade here in Artesia. Don't know if they still have any. They had probably 50....or more.....of these Eddy County War caps. And every single one of them were 1975. No other years were available, so I think it's safe to say that whoever made these caps did it to specifically pay tribute to the 1975 ECW and the events that happened at the conclusion of that game. Otherwise, there would have been other years available.

I bought me 4 caps of different color, told the lady I play in the 1975 game she even gave a free t-shirt thank you Crispy for telling me about the cap.

I played early 80s. The Carlsbad game meant more to my parents than it did for me. We beat them in 80 and it was just another win for me.
I guess cause it wasn't for district or state it didn't have the same meaning to me as the district and playoff games. My parents would lose their minds if they even heard the name Carlsbad.
Today I go to those games and still feel like it's just another game.
Everyone focuses on us. We use the season to get better and ready for district. Then we use district to prepare for a playoff run. We don't focus on one game like other teams do.

I would have to look at it again, but I believe I saw Troy Brown(61) in that picture, as well as Marcelino Sosa(41). All great people and a credit to their home town. I will look again and make sure I'm not leaving anyone out. There is also a chance that others have passed, of whom I'm not aware. Ironically, I believe my dad is the only coach in that reel that is no longer with us.
