Highland Outclassed 40-14
IT'S GREAT TO BE A BULLDOG!! Coach Henderson and his charges made believers out of the northern half of New Mexico with a convincing 40-14 walloping of the huge highland Hornets. The Hornets were favored by two touchdowns before the kickoff, but with probably the greatest team effort ever seen at Morris Field, our 2AA Champion Bulldogs proved to the northerners that you just can't keep a good Bulldog down.
John Gates broke loose early in the first quarter for a 62 yard trip down to the Highland 19-yard line. From that point, quarterback Mike Stout masterminded the Dogs to the three-yard line, where Wayne Mansell took the ball in for the first Artesia touchdown. Rex Gates kicked the pigskin through the uprights, bringing the score to 7-0.
The Bulldogs dominated the second quarter, scoring twice on the hapless Hornets Big Rex Gates powered his way into the Highland end zone from the eight yards out. His try for the PAT was wide, however, leaving the score at 13-0. Highland came fighting back, moving down the field on a series of passes. Their last pass was snatched by Bulldog Johnny Gates in his own end zone. Gates tried to get some running room, but was dumped on the four-yard line. Before the Highland head-hunters could bat an eye, Mike Stout took the ball from Tommy Walters and took off like a thing possessed straight through the middle on a quarterback sneak that covered 96 long yards to the goal line. While the trail that Stout made was still hot, Rex Gates added the extra point. The first half ended with the Bulldogs leading 20-0 as they left the field for a well deserved halftime rest.
The Bulldogs came out strong in the third period, holding the Hornets scoreless. Mike Stout scored again on a 47 yard sprint, out running the entire Highland team for the second time. Rex kicked his 3rd extra point to put the Bulldogs out in front 27-0. Highland just couldn't get into scoring range during the third quarter, which ended, showing them still scoreless.
Rex Gates drew first blood in the fourth quarter, when he out-ran and out-fought a couple of Highland defenders from the eleven yards out, scoring his second touchdown of the day. He put the icing on his own cake with his PAT.
The Hornets didn't give up just yet, however, they fought back with two touchdowns by Rex Martin. Pete Capelli added both of the extra points. With time running out, Stout moved his team swiftly down the field, trying for one last score to sweeten the now certain victory. Wayne Mansell hustled the ball across the Hornets goal line from fifteen yards out to end the scoring.
