They started off against four Texas teams. beat El Paso Burges (41-20), beat Monahans, Texas (40-6), beat El Paso Irvin (33-14), then beat El Paso Eastwood (34-7). One of the toughest teams running through one of the toughest schedules there was at that time. No team today in 2011 would want to play that schedule and Artesia blew through them all with ease. One of the best teams ever period. Artesia won title in 1966,1967,1968 and 1969

Roy, thanks for posting these reports on past Bulldog teams. I saw the 1969 squad, but wish I'd seen the '68 team, too. I heard more stories about that particular group than any other.

Roy, thanks for posting these reports on past Bulldog teams. I saw the 1969 squad, but wish I'd seen the '68 team, too. I heard more stories about that particular group than any other. You welcome 2003 Artesia Bulldogs 12-1 After losing to Onate (48-36) in the 2002 season, Artesia heading into the 2003 season poised to win back the state title trophy. They had won the title in 2001, lost to champ Onate in 2002 in the play-offs, and with a loaded team returning all eyes were on Artesia. Three quick wins over Lovington, Hobbs, and Rio Rancho had the Bulldogs in full stride. They were 5-0 heading into the Las Cruces game where they would suffer their first loss of the season in ugly fashion losing (42-20). The Bulldogs would rebound to win their next seven games in a row. They beat Moriarty to end the district season 65-0, then beat Kirtland Central (34-0) in the quarterfinals, and then beat St. Pius X (35-20) in the semifinals. Faced against 13-0 Silver City in the title game, Artesia dominated the southwestern giant winning (42-0).

That had to be rough on the seniors of the 2002 team. I don’t know which one would feel worse, losing 2 games to Roswell& Carlsbad, then winning out until the state game, to include thumping Lovington in district play only to tie them 0 to 0 in the state game. That tie game always hit me hard as a senior, I just wonder if it would have been easier to except a loss.

Was number 22 played free safety. We beat them in Lovington for district and coach Harvey met their coach in loco hills to flip a coin on when and where we would play for state. They won the flip and we played in Lovington on a Saturday at 1 in the afternoon. If we would have played Friday night at the Bulldog Bowl I feel we would have taken it , but that remains a wish of could’ve, should’ve, would’ve for many of us on the team I believe instead of the infamous “cochampionship. At least we beat Lovington earlier that year to win the state title in baseball under coach Mahan.

I forgot yes the game was in Lovington. You play with my mom nephew
