Easter Football, not exactly Thanksgiving Football but I'll take it This has been a very unique football season for sure! Probably not one like it before.....unless you go back to seasons being cancelled because of WWII.......and probably won't see another one like it in the future. I'm sure that in the future.....when you look at the record books and look back at the 2020 season, there will be asterisks all over the place.

Ok, so here’s where I’m at on this.... I just moved to Artesia 5 years ago, but I am a New Mexico native. So of course I’ve heard the legend of Cooper Henderson (and obviously VERY deserving).... I’m sure after 25 years of consistently winning state titles, expectations are through the roof at all times. Including mine.... Seen a state championship in 2017 (under Rex), and for a few years, teams were very competitive and always had a chance to win it all. But since, Artesia seems to be struggling. I guess my question is.... do you all believe their is reason for concern with a decline in the program or are we just in a low point with talent? I have mentioned what I thought were obvious concerns for the defense. But others have countered with Artesia has always struggled on defense. So maybe allowing 169 points over 4 games is more common than I thought, and par for the course. But our recent results, I think even the most optimistic Bulldog fan would have to acknowledge as unusual..... 1 win vs Hobbs in the last 4 meetings, 1 win vs Carlsbad in the last 4 meetings, Haven’t won district since 2017...... and carry a 3-6 record vs District opponents in the last 3 years. Add in the obvious struggles of our current coaching staff vs former assistants. I understand this season is very uncommon..... but isn’t every team facing the same challenges? I’m just really hoping the end of a dynasty isn’t among us..... and if it is- how will Artesia respond? Will they watch the ship sink, or scramble to save it? Just wonder how others see it playing out....Also, any word on the future classes? How talented does the younger crop look?..

Excellent post Dog Warden it’s a Dead Dog shame that someone who has just lived here 5 years has to speak up. I too am very concerned with the direction this program is headed, this is not the program I grew up watching as a kid and playing in. Slowly but surely we are on a downward spiral that if changes aren’t made we can watch Artesia Bulldog football sink into mediocrity!!

Develop players to excel their Senior years. Games are won in the weight room.

Ok “Crispy”, so as a lifelong fan..... is this type of descent typical, and just a rough patch? Has it happened in the past? And do you think there are some on the hot seat? I’m pretty sure some former successful coaches are still in the community. I would think concern is spreading.

Excellent post.... thank you for giving me a little bit of insight of the past.
I do agree that the scores and outcomes of this seasons games validate that COVID has played a factor on everyone.
I too am not trying to step on anyone’s toes.... although I guess it’s inevitable if I’m questioning why our win total continues to decline.
Defense has baffled me over recent years, not so much the games where big 6A schools like Hobbs and/or Cleveland put up huge point totals. It’s the games where teams like Roswell, Goddard, and Carlsbad run the ball literally 99% of the time to the tune of 400 yards- sometimes with the same play, and yet we continue to keep two deep safety’s 15 yards off the ball. But like I said, I have spoke with several people who have advised me that run defense has been the Achilles heel of Artesia for decades. Offensively I think Rex is an extremely gifted play caller, and it really shows against teams that don’t play us on a regular basis. And of course teams like Roswell and Goddard will do better against us.... since we play very important games with them every year in district. What concerns me most on offense is recent success (or lack of) vs former assistant coaches. Coach Willingham was the defensive coordinator for many years, plus Hobbs has the Robinson boys (former Bulldog receivers) as assistants. Coach Maupin was a Bulldog offensive coach and player.... I don’t think it’s coincidence that these teams have had success slowing the Bulldogs offense as of late. For those games.... Are we changing our play call hand signals? Do our QB’s change their audible call signs? Have we mixed up the starburst? I don’t think we are.... Of course every team is putting together a game plan to slow down Artesia.... but teams with former assistants have a significant advantage, just by knowing the details of the Bulldog program. Especially if we’re not making adjustments depending on our opponent.

Guys I always get a queasy feeling when this topic is brought up on here. I have my own thoughts and opinions sure, I just feel it wouldn't be best served posted on here, but what's the point of a message board if you can't post thoughts or opinions. We all pretty much have a boss to report too in our daily job, if the program not deemed to be headed in the right direction that's the person that needs to make that judgement call. For the game, tickets sales are tomorrow at the athletic office from 7:30 to 4pm. Tickets will be sold at the gate for 1st time as well. $5 General admission. As for the game, yeah jekyll and hyde situation last 2 weeks, looked pretty good against Roswell, which we hold that program in high regard now, they took it to Goddard it appeared. Then we just look awful in Hobbs against 0-3 team, penalties seemed to shoot us in the foot on offense 1st half, this 1st game where I though defense underperformed their potential. Need another week of amnesia, like we had with the Goddard game, need to go out and drop the hammer on Alamo, remember the Alamo and that loss last year and play our best game and call it season and finish 2-1 in district. Then time for quick off season and regroup, see what the future holds.

Completely Understood! I know you would probably say that it wasn't necessary......but I went back and deleted 2 of my posts in this thread that might be considered "questionable". I left the other one that I thought no reasonable person could possibly take offense to. Sometimes I forget that what I......WE.........post on here can put you in an awkward situation. Seriously, I didn't mind deleting my posts. They were up long enough for the regulars on here to see them. So I got my message out....and now they are gone! I appreciate what you do here Randall.....you do a great job running this site. Thanks!

You didn't have to delete it crispy, I can always delete something if I think it's warranted or causes an issue. Just giving my 2cents on it, just don't think it's the best look if we eat our own on here. I want us to win as bad as anyone for obvious reasons, but even so if I didn't have a kid on the team, just a fan of the program, history and tradition like all of us here, I want to see us succeed. I'm hopeful we can turn the corner at any moment and the light goes on. I think Friday Night game part of it, Alamo 3-1 and beat us last year at home 28-22. They need to get after them, jump on em from the get go, if we play like we did against Roswell they won't have a chance. Fingers crossed. Graphic Mr. Evarts made for the game. I love his work.

I'm ready for tomorrow night too Rapid, you should get some pictures. I'm expecting us to play well, that's my hunch.
Unique we are playing on Good Friday, well obviously but I was expecting a saturday game at first, since it's a religious holiday and no school Friday. I like it though, High School was made for Friday Nights.

Will the game be broadcasted on KSVP TV? Or will the NMAA take over and make us subscribe to proviews?

Great win for the Dogs tonight! As for this season: Totally dominated a heavily favored Roswell team, 2 time defending state champs and snapped their 19 game winning streak. Also, took a 3-1 Alamogordo team to the woodshed! So....even despite 2 bad losses, I would call this season a SUCCESS!. Others may disagree, but I am happy with the outcome of this season.

Congrats Bulldogs- I loved how the coaches got everyone in the game, and even tried like hell to get some seniors the ball. Class act!!
