Happy Friday, graduation is upon us, football will be right around the corner again. Some football news, Bowl is getting new turf, I'm guessing this will probably get underway once graduation is done. Below is next years football schedule, pretty solid schedule once again, even upgraded from last year, with Santa Teresa for Ruidoso, and new district opponent Mayfield over Alamogordo.
Aug 19th vs Carlsbad Aug 26th @ Hobbs Sept 2nd vs Belen Sept 9th vs Deming Sept 16th @ Cleveland Sept 23rd @ Lovington Sept 30th vs Santa Teresa Oct 7th Open Week Oct 14th vs Roswell Oct 21st @ Goddard Oct 29th @ Mayfield Saturday game 1pm

Couple goals for next year, destroy carlsbad, win district, the rest will take care of itself.

What's the scheduling theory behind that?

I haven't really even noticed that Rick, but you are right, we end the season before Halloween. We all know in years past that holiday has been moved for a football game on Friday night.
Looking back at old schedules, looks like we are starting the football season a week sooner in New Mexico now, for what reason I don't know. For example 2005 Game 1 was Aug 27th, 2006 Aug 25th, 2007 was Aug 31st. Looks like it started after all the covid stuff, season bumped up a week.

I hated it when they start scheduling the season opener on the last Friday in August. This was back in the 1980s when they went to the 11-game varsity football schedules.
Football to me is a fall sport, not a summer sport, so the season should open in early September and then go as far into December as needed. I always liked the way New Mexico had most of its football state games on that first Saturday in December.
That gripe aside, I admit I always liked playing the last-Friday-in-August season opener in Ruidoso. The sun would go down, the air was cool and crisp -- it felt like fall.
Then, you'd return to Artesia and start sweating again in those 90-plus temps.

In 2016, my last year coaching NM high school football (no, not in Artesia) the NMAA stated they wanted to move up football season so it wouldn't run into basketball/wrestling seasons as long. I don't know what year it went into effect but the NMAA wanted it, they even said they'd like to eventually play the championship on Thanksgiving Day. I know for you guys wrestling isn't an issue and probably not basketball much either, but we had kids participating in both sports for up to a month. Was kind of a pain. Of course, as a football coach I didn't much care about the other sports and liked playing that championship game in December. But put it on the laundry list of things I disagree with the NMAA on. I feel like wrestling/basketball start dates were also supposed to get pushed back a week but I don't follow those sports to know.

Thanks for the intel. Championship games on Thanksgiving, I had no idea some where played on that day in the past until year or so ago talking to Ronnie Sowell. Not sure how I feel about that one, in some ways it would be cool in other ways maybe tough. If dogs are playing championship game on the road say Albuquerque or Las Cruces and have to tell the wife sorry I'm not going to be home for Thanksgiving lol. On a side note Wrestling has started here, but can't remember what I heard exactly, we aren't setup to compete in NMAA just yet, but it has started. www.maxpreps.com/nm/artesia/artesia-bulldogs/wrestling/roster/FYI as you can see, I've turned on guest posting again recently, I'll continue to leave it on until issues arise from it, be nice if we don't have any, if we do most likely during season

My memories of Thanksgiving Day as a young child were to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in the morning........have Thanksgiving dinner (lunch) with everybody........immediate family.....all 4 Grandparents (all 4 of them lived right here in Artesia)......and all of my aunts & uncles & cousins......probably close to 20 of us in all. THEN, after the Thanksgiving meal we would head to Morris Field....and later The Bowl....to watch the Bulldogs win another State Title. I just took it for granted that on Thanksgiving Day there was going to be a State Championship football game. Never even gave it a second thought, lol.

We play every 5A power/perineal playoff team (except for PV), Lovington and Cleveland are defending state champions, Hobbs is the biggest school in the state, and Carlsbad is a rivalry game. Wow! I’m surprised we chose to have a bye week 😂🤣

With a schedule like that, I'm just hoping the 'Dogs can stay healthy the whole season.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger right? lol.
I'd like to see Cleveland switched, give me Cruces or Clovis back, to me they just suit us better in several ways. Prefer Cruces, not sure what's up with Clovis at the moment.

Cleveland is a no win situation (as of now). Maybe things will change over time- but right now, it’s just try and get out of there without injuries. You could argue that losing Pacheco in last years match up cost us a state title.
Also: I heard speed times were measured today…… I was disappointed to say the least with most of the times I heard. Even kids I thought were real fast…… had very pedestrian 40 times. In fact, my oldest son would have literally been the fastest player on this team- and he was just above average on the 2017 team. I’m hoping that the Bulldogs use a very unreliable clock to measure speed times……. Or we could be in for a long year.
May have to come out of the locker room a couple minutes earlier, so we arrive to the game on time 😂🤣

We could have lost Luis Pando too that game, broke his thumb bad, luckily he's just a tough kid and kept on playing with the cast, believe it needed surgery to fix it after the season was done. Losing Pacheco hurt, deans filled in great, Dom just an emotional leader and leading tackler the past 2 years prior. Dom only 5'5 but another as tough as they get, seen him tackle guys 2x 3x his size all these years, love to seen him meet the los lunas qb in the hole, another intense player/runner but I don't bet against Dom to not bring him down. Injuries can happen any game, Cleveland just so much bigger faster stronger, what can you do ? Kudos to them that program just on another level right now, even the 6A big dogs can't hang with them. Wasn't the wind blowing bad today dogwarden? maybe we were running against it, Lets go with that for now

I remember when the 'Dogs would play Texas teams in Texas during pre-district, they often lost a player or two to leg or knee injury in that game, usually because Texas used the different blocking rules.

The first thing I do when the new varsity schedule comes out every year is check the schedule for Texas teams. And every year I am disappointed. From the looks of things you will continue to be disappointed. NM has pushed the start of the season up so far, the 2 states don't start district play anywhere near the same time. Also, as a Texas coach I'm not scheduling a NM team because 1 year it might be the 3rd game of the year, and the next year the 4th game of the year or some similar circumstance. The end result being you are out of a game because the schedules didn't stay lined up. We are going to start football practice on the first Monday in August, period. That never changes other than 5A and 6A can elect to start on the 2nd Monday in August if they choose to have spring football. The result of this being we can start game 1 as early as the 4th Thursday following the 4th Monday in August. NM starts before that, usually. That "usually", makes things unreliable for schedule setting. Everyone agrees to a home/home contract, meaning to play for 2 consecutive years. It looks to me like NM is trying to get football over with by Thanksgiving.

I heard they are now testing 40’s on the turf, not the track. Get a more realistic time, kinda like the NFL combines?
