.......according to Sports Illustrated. sportsillustrated.cnn.com/magazine/features/si50/states/new_mexico/greatest/No, Landry is not on the list.......this list if from 1999. I just thought this might get some conversation going. There are some people on the list that I hadn't thought about in a very long time.....Shane Andrews from Carlsbad for example. I know that he was a baseball stud and went on to play MLB, but what I remember most about him is how he ripped us a new one on the football field in C-bad one night. Not sure of the year, but one night at Ralph Bowyer Caveman Stadium it seemed like every time he touched the ball he went into the endzone. On the ground AND through the air. That was a very long night, and I remember it like it was yesterday. I don't have any problems with the order of the list, not saying this guy should be higher than that guy or anything like that. That's not why I am posting this. Just thought it might be a conversation starter. However, I will say that I think there are people on the list that don't belong there. Hot air balloon pilots and a few others that I won't go into. Just one closing thought.........I had no idea that Carlsbad had sent so many to the NFL. Lots of former Cavemen played in the NFL. Quite a few of them on the list.

How would it be different if SI did it today? I think there would probably be some names added to the list... Landry.....probably not. Most on the list had pro careers. Hank Baskett...maybe Cody Ross...most definitely Any others?

How would it be different if SI did it today? Brian Urlacher is probably #1 or #2 on that list now, when all is said and done he should be a hall of famer. If Bobby Newcombe is #39 Landry would be on this list for sure, since he owns several passing records at OU. Likely to be a 1st Rounder too. Maybe Jeff Taylor at Vanderbilt makes the list now? his dad is there at #49 Couple baseball players you can probably add Blake Swihart from RR, drafted by Red Sox #26 overall in 2011 draft. Alex Bregman from Albq, signed with LSU.

He also was a good high school basketball player (point guard) and I believe was the backup QB on the LaCueva uber-teams of that era.

This guy would be on there for sure, I guess he would qualify, just played 1 season for albq high then went to UNM and after that had a 10 year NBA career Kenny Thomas.
Probably add Alan Branch too.

Agree 100% on Kenny Thomas. He is SEVERELY underrated even in Albuquerque, mainly because it became "the thing to do" in the local print media to trash the kid because he wasn't Superman.
Tommy McDonald is also WAY too low on that original list (college football and NFL Hall of Famer). I would put him and Urlacher in the Top 10 somewhere.

I thought Kenny Thomas was from El Paso. I know for a fact that he played for El Paso Austin HS for 2 or 3 years because I got to see him play a few games down there when we were living in EP. Or maybe y'all are talking about a different Kenny Thomas?

Just thought about Terrence Mathis from UNM but not sure he was from NM. Played receiver for NY Jets, I thought he was pretty good, even though he didn't get much publicity being with Jets at the time.

Terence Mathis was good bgp, he was from Detroit, I think most on this list were born in new mexico or at least played high school ball in nm.

Sorry Randall and BGP, but you are both wrong about Terrance Mathis. He was a teammate of mine at UNM for 3 years. He was originally recruited to UNM out of Stone Mountain Georgia as a QB. Our OC, Ben Griffin was from Georgia Southern and that is where the connection was. Shortly after arriving on campus as a freshman, Terrance was moved to WR where he went on to smash all of the UNM career recieving records. Terrance went on to play for the Jet, Falcons, and finshed up his last couple of years with the Steelers. He had a TD catch for the Falcons in their Super Bowl loss to the Broncos in what would turn our to be John Elway's last game. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terance_Mathis He was UNM's first concensus all american, FYI.
