I'm an OU grad, from an OU family (six OU degrees between the four of us), so I'm glad Landry played for OU. My folks also go to OU women's games, and my dad actually met Landry at one of them. His in-laws (the Hand family) sit near where my folks have season tickets. My dad had a copy of an Albuquerque Journal story that he was going to give to the Hand family so they could get it to Landry, then he saw Landry was sitting 10 feet away.
Anyway, my dad, who's also a former OU walk-on from the early 50's, introduced himself and gave Landry the newspaper. He said Landry was really nice and appreciative (and that one of Landry's aunts, who was nearby, was really overjoyed that my dad had that article and wanted Landry to have it).
Sorry if I've told that story more than once. But I thought it might be appreciated again.
Landry was a good fit in OU's offense. He probably set most of the career passing records out of sight for anyone in the immediate future at least. I honestly believe that the fan sentiment on Landry, among the OU "nation," is probably 90/10 positive. It's just the stupid 10% of "bashers" who embarrass us all. I post regularly on three different OU boards, too, and I listen to KREF out of Norman at work. They also get lots of past OU football greats who think Landry is a great kid and a great player.
I've been told that the OU Club of New Mexico is working on having Landry come to the Sooner Caravan in Albuquerque later in the spring. If so, I will share the details. I would also challenge anyone who believes the negative-nellies are the majority to come to Albuquerque and meet some of our alumni group. The alumni are also usually more rational than the bandwagon-jumpers would be anyway.
P.S. - I'm so glad that Landry also disappointed former KOAT-TV sports guy John Salazar. He got on the radio back in '07 and gushed about how great it would have been to see "Landry Jones running the Air Raid" at New Mexico State. It would have been a tremendous waste of talent, in my book. Landry won 50 games as a starter at OU; and while he would have improved Mumme's team some, it would have still been a losing proposition on the scoreboard at NMSU.
And, UNM would have been a bad fit just because of the style of offense. That's not to say that Rocky Long wouldn't have considered changing it, but his track record was more about ball-control offense. Kole McKamey was a better fit at UNM because of that.
