I just finished watching Friday Night Lights, the story of Odessa Permian years ago. Good movie. Odessa Permian is still one of the bes football program in Texas. They were small but they were hungry to win and had the "the eye of the Tiger". Go 'dogs ....

FNL is one of my favorite movies of all time. Probably in my top 5 overall, and definitely my #1 SPORTS movie. Strangely though, I never got into the FNL television series...in fact, I never even watched one episode. But the MOVIE, oh yeah!!!
I guess part of the reason I like the movie so much is because I have had the opportunity to see Permian play in person 2 or 3 times, and this was back in their glory days of the 80s and early 90s, so I totally "got it" as far as the movie was concerned.

I was offered the job of DB Coach and Head Baseball Coach at Permian and stayed in Artesia instead. If I had accepted my first year would have been the year the book and movie are about.

That book detailed the 1988 Permian football season. The following spring, March 1989, Permian played three games in the Artesia Invitational Baseball Tournament; there were a few football players on that baseball team, including pitcher Mike Winchell, who was the QB the previous fall and who is written about in the book.
He was in the all-tournament team group photo I shot after the championship game.
The Permian team manager, in the Brainard Park press box videotaping each game the Panthers played in the tournament, told me a bit of how other folks in Odessa, the Odessa High Bronchoes in particular, view Permian, its football fans and the Mojo thing. He said that according to them, Mojo really stands for Most Obnoxious Jerks in Odessa.
Several years ago, a former Permian athlete told me that Panther fans still refer to Friday Night Lights as "that damn book."

My dad, an Odessan, thought it was a brilliant work of fiction. Personally, I know Gary Gaines. The portrayal of him as a coach lacking in character and concern for his players was enough for me to know that it was horse poo. Gary Gaines is absolutely what every coach ought to aspire to be. I would imagine Charliedog knows him too and has a similar opinion of him. As for the opinions about Permian and everything about them, let me remind you guys of the what most northern schools think of us. Everyone wants to tear down anything that sparkles. They have their idiots, but Permian, and particularly the Permian of that era, was a model school.

Can Odessa Permian ever win a state title again?
I think they or another west texas team would need an absolute stud on the team, like Cedric Benson was at Midland Lee and they won 3 straight 98-2000.
Not a really a fan of Cedric, he was a bum for the Bears but the guy has major talent or he wouldn't be still hanging around the NFL.

I had a very pleasant 5 minute conversation with Coach Mayes at Bulldog Bowl in the early 1990s. It happened when we were hosting Permian for a 7-on-7 at Bulldog Bowl...I am thinking '92 or '93...I could be wrong on the year.
