I'm always ready for football. I think the season should be about 10 or 11 months long. I say give them half of December and January off and then get back to it.

I'm 100 miles away and I'm excited to see this bunch play. The only guys left are the die hards. That's the way it should be every year, IMO.

I was a little late but saw Onate score once. Don't know if we did or not. Had some bright spots both offense and defense, but think we need some work so hopefully we will be ready for kitty cats on Friday!

Our offense scored in 4 plays to start the scrimmage, after it was all said and done after a little over an hour. Onate had 2 scores to our 1.
Like Bulldogbooster45 said our numbers are way down, there was 10 sophs dressed out with the varsity for the scrimmage. As far as I can remember we've never had that, most sophs you would have on varsity was 2 or 3 at most. I feel they got a ways to go still but I'll be rooting for them.

Here's my breakdown fwiw. Offense needs reps. Receivers and Qbs looked like they need more "together" time. Coach H will get them lined out. The OL played well and the RBs are still a little timid (gets better with reps).
The defense on the other hand, I saw some excitement. They look a little green but I saw some good plays. The nose tackle and the MLB looked seasoned. Overall very very young! I counted 48 kids dressed out. I could have been off. I didn't catch the sophs I was still workin.
As fans and supporters, we need to rally around these guys. They are gonna be good. It's gonna take some time.

Bulldogbooster45 said he counted 48 kids dressed out with the varsity. Could be a few more, could be a few less.....but let's just assume that there will only be 48 dressed out on Friday nights. I went back and looked at some of the old rosters that Randall has put on here. I looked at the number of varsity players listed on the rosters from some of the greatest Bulldog teams of all time. ALL of these teams have been talked about on here, at one time or another, as possibly being the best Bulldog team ever. 1998.....record 13-0.....Championship game, beat Ruidoso 35-9......Number of kids on varsity was 68. 2006...Landry's junior year.....record 13-0....Championship game, beat Goddard 30-23.....Number of kids on varsity was 66. Granted, both the '98 and the '06 teams were 2 of the best ever in the history of Bulldog football, and they both had roughly 20 more kids on the roster than what has been speculated for THIS year. But you have to ask yourself, with that many kids on the roster, how many never saw the field on a REGULAR BASIS? Now lets go back a little farther in history and talk about some of the OTHER teams that have been talked about right along side of the 2 teams mentioned above. 1966.....record 12-0.....Championship game, beat Albq Highland 40-14......Number of kids on varsity was only 33. 1974.....This team has been talked about probably more that any other as being on the same level as the '98 and the '06 teams.....record 13-0.....Championship game, beat Deming 23-0.....Number of kids on varsity was only 40. 1975.....Rapid's senior year, and the year of "the catch".....record 11-1.....Championship game, beat St. Pius in the Albuquerque Sports Stadium 22-17.....Number of kids on varsity was only 41. The point I am trying to make is this...Some of the best and most dominant teams in Bulldog history have had fewer kids on the roster than what we will probably have this year. By the standards of the 1960s and 1970s this years roster will be huge! Besides, I have heard that numbers are down all over, it's not just Artesia. It seems to be a trend everywhere. I think things will balance out and we will be just fine!

Going thru school in what we kept hearing was the smallest Artesia class in decades, the class of 1985, the coaches always tried to encourage us by telling us that the 1969 team I believe it was went to battle with roughly 30 kids every Friday night and is also considered to be the best ever AHS team. Whether that's true or not I have no idea but they told us that.

Whether that's true or not I have no idea but they told us that. 1969 team had 29 kids on the roster. They went 12-1 and beat Hobbs 21-0 in the title game in Bulldog Bowl. I was at that championship game vs Hobbs, I was 11 yrs old and I will NEVER forget it. I think I remember reading in the Artesia paper that attendance at that game was close to 12,000. I use to love to go to the library and spend hours on a Saturday looking through rolls and rolls of OLD "Daily Press" micro-film. I researched that particular game quite a few years ago, and they said in the neighborhood of 12,000 from what I remember. Bulldog Bowl only seats 6500, but they didn't turn away anybody. What I vividly remember from that game is that there were almost as many people seated on the berms as there were in the stands.

That's a good point Crispy, you can win with low numbers, Goddard is proof of that. I counted 44 players on last years roster, 20 of which were sophs www.goddardrocketfootball.com/2012_Rocket_Roster.htmlThere stud players are of course playing both ways as well. The thing with Artesia is we traditionally have the numbers and don't need to play our guys on both sides of the ball, by the 4th quarter close game, you'd believe we were the team with fresher legs and we going to make that winning play when it counted. That's been our MO in the past it seems in my opinion, I wouldn't mind seeing this change if the kids don't come out like they used too, but that's for someone that knows more about the situation we face than me to decide lol.
