Hi everyone, I came across this forum while searching for history on the Artesia Bulldog mascot. I am working on a project that involves the bulldog and need any info I can get on him such as does he have a name, has he always been the mascot, since when? And any other relevant information anyone can think of. Also can anyone give me the words to the Alma Mater? I have the fight song words. Thank you to all for any help or info you can give.

Charliedog owned an unofficial mascot.
From memory as best I can remember: Here's to the our Alma mater, We pledge our loyalty. Our love and true devotion, will ever follow thee. (might be honor rather than follow) Long reign in royal splendor, Our hearts will be thy throne, Artesia High forever... shall reign all alone.

As far as live mascot, aka a real dog, I believe Winston has been the only actual recognized mascot. I'm speaking for the last 20yrs here. And yes I'm biased. Winston was requested by Coach for pics, games, etc. It definitely grew into something bigger. He was even recognized by Mr Phipps and the School Board. For those that may be wondering, Winston is now 10.5yrs old, retired, and living the good life in Las Cruces, NM.

I take that to mean that you are Winston's owner.....sorry if I am wrong. I am SO happy to hear that Winston is still with us! I figured that he had probably waddled across the Rainbow Bridge a few years ago. 10 1/2 years is pretty old for a Bulldog. Google search "Rainbow Bridge Poem" if you don't know what I am talking about. Anyway, just so happy to hear that he is doing well. Give him an extra treat tonight and tell him that it's from Crispysdad. My son use to get such a kick out of watching him run onto the field and retrieve the kicking tee. Winston is a legend here in Artesia and we miss him! You should bring him back to an Artesia homecoming game sometime.....walk him out onto the field during halftime and make a big deal out of it, maybe even present him with some kind of award! I can guarantee you that Winston would receive a standing ovation!

Crispysdad
I don't know that anybody owns Winston. He does allow us to share a couch with him though. And every time we come home to Artesia, people insist on seeing him. Forgive the cliche' but I think he may belong just a bit to every Artesia fan, coach, and player.
He's definitely aged, but pretty well we think. Some arthritis, some glaucoma, and pretty hard of hearing. But still full of life and personality.
We are humbled by the loyalty Coach has shown him & us. His pic is still up in Coach's office. And Coach always asks about him. Don't forget the tee-fetching thing was his idea. Lol.

Wow Mcgrubbs it's been a long time. I'm with Crispy I didn't think Winston was still with us, last I heard from you he was having health issues and had retired from tee fetching, Crispy idea is pretty awesome too, they need to honor him in his old age lol. One of the coolest things I've seen on the football field, he's a legend.

This is wonderful mcgrubbs! Can you maybe send a picture of him fetching the tee? What years did he participate as the tee fetching dog? We are installing a bronze Bulldog statue on Main St and would love to put Winstons picture on the plaque!Charliedog you too! Have there been anymore through out the years? We would like to memorialize them too. When did AHS decide they were the Bulldogs? What year was the glory year that put the Bulldogs on the HS football map? If you were to see a giant Bulldog statue on Main Street what would you like to see on the plaque on his podium he will be on? Thank you for all of your help! This is fantastic stuff so far

There is a Bulldog Statue in the Hall of Champions, I think it's just a statue, not memoralizing any of the former mascots though. There also was a man who raised and breed Bulldogs, His name was Cruz, don't remember his last name, but he would bring them to the games, he usually brought 2 of them and keeped them on the sidelines. Anybody remember that?

Anybody remember that? I remember that like it was yesterday! His last name was Acosta......Cruz Acosta....I know that for a FACT! He use to run the Artesia Rec Center before Louie Reyes took it over. I use to talk to him about his bulldogs all the time. Pretty sure Cruz still lives here.

That's it, thanks Crispy. I used to work with Cruz a long time ago, right after I got out of High School.
Cruz did it for awhile, he told me eventually he had to just quit it, he said he would get so attached to the dogs that when he lost one it was like losing a close member of the family, it was just too much.
I haven't ran into Cruz in a long time, but gobigorange you should definitely look him up if he is here in town.
