I just felt obligated to post this on here. I don't know how many of you on this board are familiar with the name, Owen Nichols. But all of us on here are Bulldog football fans, and if you are a Bulldog football fan and have been regularly attending home games at Bulldog Bowl for the past 20 years or so, you are probably very familiar with Owen Nichols. Even if you didn't know what his name was, I would be willing to bet that you probably ran into him at Bulldog Bowl and even had a pleasant word with him a time or two.
I am guessing that Owen was probably around 70 yrs old, give or take a year or two. Owen could always be found EVERY Friday night at Bulldog Bowl hanging out around the west end of the field house, right by the Bulldog Museum. From what I understand Owen was sort of a "security guard" during Friday night games at Bulldog Bowl. He always told me that he was "watching over the team buses" to make sure that nobody messed with them during games.....although I don't remember seeing him there last season because I think he was in very bad health. Owen proudly wore his gray hair very long, shoulder length or longer, and often in a pony-tail. He was also very proud of his LONG gray beard. Owen was "Duck Dynasty" before it was cool! Owen was also a very proud Vietnam Vet! You would always see him there by the field house every Friday night all decked out in his leather vest adorned with all kinds of pins.....POW pins....Vietnam era pins......and LOTS and LOTS of biker pins. Yes, Owen loved to ride his motorcycle! He loved riding his bike more than anything in life! But he also loved greeting Bulldog fans and shaking hands as the fans entered Bulldog Bowl before the game...and shaking hands with Bulldog fans as they filed out of Bulldog Bowl after the game was over.
Owen Nichols was the Uncle of one of my wife's best friends. Owen Nichols (Proud Vietnam Vet & Bulldog Fan) passed away Friday afternoon at his home in Artesia. My wife and I have known Owen for almost 30 years. Not only was he one of the Artesia Bulldog's biggest fans......he was also a very good friend of my wife and I for a very long time. I will miss talking to him at Bulldog home football games. No services are scheduled at this time.
