"If Carlsbad was playing Russia in a marble match I'd be there with a Russian flag." TW Harvey, Pre-cold war quote
"If Carlsbad loses to Clovis tonight I'll be happier than a tick on a fat dog." TW Harvey, as we pass the Clovis bus going to Carlsbad on our way to Portales
Also on the previous quote about spitting was actually made by him with a different liquid bodily function, not spittin.

OK, here's one! Not sure why this one had slipped my mind until just now.......
The 2001 game that was played in Carlsbad. Kole McKamey was the QB and it was his senior year. Friday night at Caveman Stadium, although it was still very much daylight during pregame warm ups. During pregame the most dark, menacing, ugliest storm clouds that I have ever seen started rolling into the area. Lightning was flashing all around. Refs say "lightning delay" and send both teams to the locker room for what seemed like almost an hour. Finally, the "all clear" is given and they start the game. Not sure how long they played but I think it was less than a quarter, then ANOTHER lightening delay was issued and both teams head back to the locker room AGAIN. After what seemed like almost another hour they made the announcement that the game would NOT be played that night! Artesia was winning the game at that point, but not enough of the game had been played to make it official. They announced that the game would be played "tomorrow afternoon" which was a Saturday. I think it was to start at 1:00 or 2:00 Saturday afternoon. The following afternoon.....Saturday......it was SOOO freakin' HOT. There was not a breath of air to be found......it was dead calm......not a breeze anywhere.....and the sun was beating down relentlessly. It was probably mid to upper 90s as far as temperature goes....but it felt like 120. That Saturday afternoon in Carlsbad was probably the closest I have ever come to heat stroke. It was absolutely MISERABLE!!! OH, and we lost the game 15-17. Seems that I also remember a very questionable interception by Carlsbad that ended our last drive....then Carlsbad ran out the clock.
The only good thing about that game on Saturday afternoon was that they let anybody who showed up into the stadium free of charge. They made the announcement when they ended the game on Friday night that there would be no rain checks issued for the Saturday game........."no rain checks will be needed".........."just show up and we'll let you in for free".
Maybe I refreshed somebody's memory with that one. Anybody else remember that 2001 game?

Best bumper sticker ever. "Beat Carlsbad every chance you get". When I started coaching in Artesia in 87 that was one of the first things I was indoctrined with. The week we played Carlsbad 8th graders it was the only thing Coach Rex Robinson would say to the kids to get them fired up!!! Beat Carlsbad every chance you get!!

Cecil Marks now teaches American History at Mansfield High School Coach, when did he leave Artesia? My son, Ryan is working at Wilbanks, and this summer Cecil was still working there too. Battling cancer as I understand it.

Battling cancer as I understand it. Last I knew he was in Artesia working at Wilbanks. Did have some health problems, don't know what. I saw him at a restaurant sometime this summer. So if he is teaching must have started this year.

Cecil had been teaching at MHS for several years. I just checked the Teachers and he is not there now. He taught next door to my son for 5 years.

crispy, I remember the 2001 fiasco. I was actually living in Carlsbad at the time, about 300 yards from the stadium. Not a good weekend. Very ugly all around, the "very questionable" call that ended the 'Dog drive and eventually the game was an offensive pass interference call.

The more I think about it, you are probably correct about the "very questionable" call.......it has been a few years, and my memory is not what it once was, lol.

My father played in 1929-31. His senior year, Carlsbad had a dirty play designed to put him out of the game. It worked and he ended up in the hospital. My grandfather never forgave them and would not set foot in that town. So this has been going on a long time.
