Granted I did not see much of the game but one thing really stood out to me. At the end of the first half the ‘Dogs made a nice drive to get in position to score and drive a stake through the Caveboys heart. However, penalty’s killed that drive and their left defensive end created havoc for Trent. I feel as if they had completed the drive with a TD the second half would have been a different story. Looks as if the’Dogs have the talent to be a really good team - need to quit making unforced errors (better known as penalties).

Rowlettdog, I agree. One loss to a 6A school will not make a season. Needs IMHO, the Sat morning coach and QB LOL sez, work on mistakes, reduce the penalties, work on catching those passes and my redhead fiesty wife who watched some of the game work on playing all 48 minutes of the game. It seems they fizzled out by the end of the first quarter.

Taking away on the positive note.... I was impressed overall with the defense. The dogs were totally out matched in the trench and got manhandled all game long. However they kept getting up to get back in the fight. I thought Coach Johnston did well. Sure we gave up almost 400yds rushing, but the defense only let them in the end zone 3 times. Plus there is only so much you can do, when each linemen is giving up 50 to 100 pounds.... I would have liked to see the Saftey’s get pulled up for run support once it Became clear that they were committed to running over us.... but that’s just my opinion.
Offensively, I’m not real concerned. We’ll correct the penalties and self inflicted wounds... I’d like to less drops for sure! This was a tough first game- remember we just faced a defensive coordinator that has been in our huddle for years and years.... Safe to say, he had a pretty good idea of what we are trying to do!

In 2001 we lost the first game of the season to Lovington by a score of 28-34. We capped off the season by beating St Pius in the State Title game. OH....and for what it's worth we also lost to Carlsbad that year 15-17. Just sayin'! I am sure there were other years that we lost the opener and ended up winning state.....but too lazy to look them up.
Lot's of people on here throwing in the towel already. Well, methinks they should pull their panties out of their buttcrack and grow a pair. We have been here before!

I was surprised to see the Cavemen had 6 players going both ways. I am sure their new DC told them this is a poor way to organize your program. Those players should have been too exhausted to score 28 unanswered points on us.

Olddog, I’m not saying I disagree with you. Heck Artesia has 30 state championships - safe to say whatever they’re doing works!! However I can’t say I disagree with how Carlsbad played the game... yes they did have kids playing on both sides of the ball- but sparingly. If they played full time on offense, they only came in for a few plays defensively- and vice versa. They obviously didn’t get worn down, and it’s hard to fault a team that puts their best players on the field in key situations. Just an example- I think putting a BIG BODY like Isaiah Farmer down on the D-line in those 4th and short situations might have gave us a better shot at stopping them... But that’s not how the Bulldogs do things! I’m cool with that too- cause I know we’ll still be playing football through November. GO DOGS!!

Some good posts in here, brings out the discussion.
olddogfan- couple things to your post, I think the no 2 way starters is more a Henderson philosophy than probably Coach Willingham. I have no real proof but I tend to think we are the minority in regards to 2 way players, most schools will do it.
I agree with hitparade, I wouldn't mind situational 2 way players, sometimes certain classes are lean in some areas why not help out in certain spots if you got a guy on the other side of the ball that could help at times. Like hitparade says though, it's not broke, what they have done works, like George Bush used to say "stay the course" lol.
I think our plan is to always wear out those 2 way players come the 4th quarter, there was no rhythm to this game though, penalty's every other play it seems, on both Artesia and Carlsbad. Always a stoppage. The only rhythm that came was in the late 2nd half when Carlsbad was able to keep running the ball, that about ended the game. To borrow another quote Mike Tyson "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth"
We just weren't able to execute our plan friday, willingham probably had a lot to do with throwing a monkey wrench in all that.
Crispy makes a good point, lost 1st game before and went on to win State, I remember in 97 we didn't lose the opener, but played Ruidoso and we were very sluggish, don't believe we pulled it out until late 2nd half, won 19-8. We faced Ruidoso again 1st round of the playoffs, blew them away 45-20 difference was night and day.
Next week won't be a cakewalk but a lot of time to make adjustments and get back on track for the long haul.

Well things didn’t pan like they do most times.
Size was one factor big kids and lots aggression to get a win I think pushed the cavemen.
Defensive coordinator that used to be ours here in Artesia another part of it would seem to be a bit of bad ju ju in my eyes.
Once the momentum changes would seem to stay in there corner.
Like was said to many penalties no aggression out sized and lack of keeping off the mistakes. Lessons learned. Seems like it will be a working year this year for sure. These first seven games will make the dogs improve and learn.
It’s never just given to the bulldogs although slot of tv sports programs like to make it seem that when they say stuff like “seems like every year there in the championship game” well the last four years they have been. Didn’t mean they will pick up where they left off. But it’s nice to think it would happen lol.
Next week we face a former bulldog in coach Gleghorn he knows about the tradition of bulldog football. He’s no stranger to it. All I can say is work hard watch film Buckle down and get ready for number two. Cause let’s face it this year is different just like every other year. That’s why we practice that’s why we study.
Tuff to swallow Friday night. But have you seen what las cruces did to Manzano and what centennial did to Rio Rancho. Cavemen will definitely have there luck cut out for them.
ITS GREAT TO BE A BULLDOG!!!!

And one more thing the schedule we are playing is loaded with teams that were in the playoffs last year. Granted the teams are not the same as last year but Artesia has not shied away from competition.
2010 at one point the dogs were 4-4 and people wrote them off. And holy cow what a state championship game that was. On paper Aztec should have beat us up and down the field. But it’s always been said over and over. It’s never the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog.
Never count out a team with desire and will to bring the fight every time your in the game. Call it blowing your own horn call it what you will but I am proud of the dogs when they win and even prouder of them when they loose. As dumb as that sounds.
Okay I’m finished till now he Hobbs post lol Go dogs

Sometimes a team is better than another one.
We reutrn a lot of experience. We have a large senior class with lots of experience.
In our scrimmage we performed well on both sides of the ball. La Cueva returns a lot on both sides of the ball from their state runner up team.
Carlsbad is huge up front. Their offense line has a player that was highly recruited and chose Oklahoma State to play for in college. They have some very strong athletic running backs.
I feel extremely confident that this team will have success. I think they are almost as good as last year's team.
This year Roswell High, Goddard and Los Lunas will provide us the most competition in our quest for number 31. I don't see any of them as big it physical in their lines.
I'd rather lose a few games to bigger schools and win a state title than playing a week schedule and struggling in the playoffs.
By the way I'm not a fan of two platooning. I like our best players in the game at all times. I don't think conditioning plays a part in this style. Especially when we don't do much conditioning during the season. Remember back when Manzano came to town. They had 9 two way starters and they ran a no huddle tempo offense and ran us out the bowl. 6a Championship programs in Texas have two way starters.
But having a two platooning system does keep the participation numbers up as kids know they have a shot to play. That's where I like the system. I also like that a kid can focus on his position his entire career.

Pre-season game with too many penalties. It’s a loss to C-Bad, first one in 5 years. The Dog’s will be fine. Get better every week and keep your eyes on the prize. I am confident that the road to the State Championship still runs through Bulldog Bowl. Go Dogs! Beat the Eagles!

I haven't been on here in forever but i think to many people are upset over losing. Artesia is loaded and will win state again. Carlsbad is better than they have been in years. Some of our baseball players came out for football this year which always helps. Just my thoughts on the game you win games in the trenches and Carlsbad won that battle.

I heard they will reschedule the 2nd half im not sure though. Total yards was probably 230 to 70 in favor of us we turned it over 3 times and twice inside the 10.
