news-bulletin.com/los-lunas-tigers-dominate-belen-eagles-in-74th-annual-valencia-bowl/quote from belen coach, from the game with Los Lunas. Belen head coach Peña pointed to the skill of the Tigers and the size of their roster. “When you got 22 guys who play on the field and we’ve got 13 guys, you better be better than us,” Peña said Belen may utilize a lot of 2 way players. Pena took over the program this past year, previous coach took the job at Clovis. Pena has been around the Belen program for a long time so maybe they will have some stability there again. Peña is the fifth head coach for Belen football since 2019

There's nothing like that 1st win James Yodice, Albuquerque Journal, N.M
The Eagles gave their new head coach the game ball on Thursday night after Belen whipped Manzano 52-0. They dumped some cold water on his 57-year-old head.
This bath was a long time coming.
He played at football at Belen and graduated in 1983. His children were Belen High athletes. He was an assistant football coach with the Eagles for 23 years before he finally earned his shot to make this program his own.
And on Thursday, through nearly 40 years of close ties to Belen and to Valencia County as an athlete and coach, Peña finally won his first game. It wasn't like any of the others, earned by men 15 to 20 years more junior.
And it most definitely didn't carry the same weight, either.
"You know, it was surreal," Peña said. "You can always say that you want to be a head coach, and you want to get that first win, but until you're in that position. ... "
It had been many years since a homegrown Belen guy won a varsity football game as head coach, going back to Kevin Benavidez (whose last season was 2007).
The Eagles have had a few coaches since then. John Lerma, Ty House, Greg Henington, Andrew McCraw.
"I learned a lot from every coach I coached under," Peña said. "I took traits from every single one of them."
And now Peña, whose love for Belen — the program, the school, the community at large — runs deep.
"It didn't hit me until then," Peña said of the long time between wins by a Belen native. "It didn't hit me until I walked off the field (at Wilson Stadium)."
The Eagles lost their opener, 45-0 to rival Los Lunas. Their next game takes them to Bulldog Bowl in Artesia, on Friday night.
But as with the other, aforementioned men, there can only be one first victory.
"I shared it with the kids I love, that I've watched grow up. I've coached their parents," Peña said. "Belen, to me, means everything. I want to be here for the long haul."

..........The Eagles gave their new head coach the game ball on Thursday night after Belen whipped Manzano 52-0......... I know this topic is about Belen.........but WOW, how Manzano's program has fallen! Artesia is 0-4 vs Manzano. If you remember.....not all that long ago.......we played Manzano 4 yrs in a row, 2008-2011. And they gutted us every single game. Gutted us ugly!

I saw the you tube video (from Scott Hood) - Belen v Manzano. Wow……. Manzano looked like they had never practiced a day of football prior to the game. Defense jumped off sides 2 or 3 times on the first drive- Plus offense was unbelievable. Literally looked like they were playing hot potato with the football while Belen chased them (11 guys unblocked, every play)

Organ Mountain had a lot of emotions riding on this game. It was dedicated to a player #22 Abe Romero who was injured last week and remains hospitalized. Although still I was at the game due to my daughter and Mayfield seemed off offensively. They didn’t look imposing and if you got them to throw it wasn’t good. Maybe it’s just early in the season but Artesia should do well I think. shocker tonight. Organ Mountain 28 Mayfield 0

I mentioned in another thread about a week ago that I was looking forward to this game.........
Cleveland Storm..........47 Amarillo High Sandies....30
Game was played last night in Amarillo TX. Impressive to me because Amarillo High is usually one of the stronger teams in the Texas Panhandle. Not sure about them this year though.

Big shout out to that Bulldog DEFENSE!! I was the first to criticize giving up over 350 yds rushing in each of the first 2 games- I want to be the first to give praise in last nights shut out. Nice seeing how we held up to a team more our size. Very pleased with how the coaches and players responded over the last week. Go Dogs!!
