2023 Artesia-Hobbs Football History This will be the 86th game in the Artesia-Hobbs series. The two teams have played in all but eight years starting in 1931, but have met every season since 1978. Hobbs last season had one of its best teams in a number of years going 9-2 having lost a first round playoff game to Volcano Vista 35-31. They beat long time rival Clovis last week 41-13. They beat the Bulldogs in a shootout last year in Hobbs 69-48. Recent games between the two schools have tended to be high scoring. In the 22 games played since 2001, Artesia has averaged 41 points to 28 points for Hobbs. The Bulldogs home record against the Eagles over 43 games is 28-12-3. Since Bulldog Bowl opened in 1967, they have lost only five home games against the Eagles going 22-5-0. The last home loss against Hobbs was 56-49 in 2017. Overall Record Artesia: 50 wins, 32 losses, 3 ties As always thanks to Mr. Evarts for the game history. Been mentioned before but Hobbs is the biggest High School in terms of enrollment in the State and it's really not even close. A lot of kids to pull from, they got themselves a good head coach, this should be a good game Friday, hopefully we can pack the House and get another win but it's going to be a big step up in competition from last week.

Interesting interview with Hobbs coach. As usual it appears as if Hobbs has some large and fast kids. But do they have enough to take the hammering that Artesia bring to the table or will they wear down in the second half?

If I remember correctly, it seemed like turnovers had a huge impact on the game last year. Considering the dogs only through one pick on an errant pass early on against cbad, I have a good feeling about this game. It seemed like they had very few penalties against cbad too. It's hard with the different referee crews from week to week , but those are definitely good indicators.

Correct. I think it was 7 Turnovers (3 Ints & 4 fumbles). Coach Willingham preaches to tackle the football. Last years Hobbs team was really good and had athletes everywhere on both sides of the ball, but they lost 15 starters. You can always count on Hobbs being bigger than us up front but I’m hoping our athlete are going to be similar, if not ours a little better. I think this one’s going to come down to execution. I’ll take our coaches over anyone in the state, let’s hope the Dogs execute!
Also, Hobbs starting QB this year is a transfer from Carlsbad. He was the backup for the cavemen a year ago and even got playing time in last years E.C.W. after the starter got hurt. He threw the last interception to Josiah Rodriguez to seal it for the Dogs!

ITS ALMOST FRIDAY AND ITS ALMOST THE FIRST HOME GAME IN THE WORLD-FAMOUS BULLDOG BOWL. HOBBS (1-0) COMES IN YOUNG BUT HAVE REALLY GOOD SIZE BUT WHEN DONT THEY HAVE SIZE, THIS WILL BE A VERY INTERESTING GAME. LAST YEARS GAME WAS GIVEN TO THEM BECAUSE OF OUR TURNOVERS (7), WE TOOK CARE OF THE BALL LAST WEEK SO HOPEFULLY THAT CONTINUES. HOBBS OFFENSE IS VERY SIMILAR TO ARTESIA'S AND WE KNOW WHY THEY HAVE 2 COACHES FROM ARTESIA ON THAT SIDE OF THE BALL. ALSO, ANOTHER COACH ON DEFENSE RAN BY COACH WILLINGHAM SO LOTS OF SIMILARITIES GOING INTO THIS GAME. THE GAMES BETWEEN US ARE ALWAYS HIGH SCORING SO IT SHOULD BE A GOOD ONE BUT I DONT SEE THE EAGLES KEEPING UP WITH US LATE IN THE SECOND HALF.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: JAQUEZ #2 WR 5'8 BLACK #20 WR 5'6 ARMENDARIZ #23 RB 5'7 BROCK BEATY #13 QB 6'2 DAVIS #33 OLB 6'1 DAIZ-CASTRO #42 MLB 5'10
MY PREDICTION: DOGS 42- SHEGALS 28

CalPreps says Dogs win..........
neutral field [2023] Artesia (NM) 38 (65%), [2023] Hobbs (NM) 31 (35%)
CalPreps also says that this year's Dog team is better than the 2006 Dog team......the team that I always think of when the topic turns to the best Dog team ever, Landry's Sr year.
neutral field [2023] Artesia (NM) 35 (53%), [2006] Artesia (NM) 34 (47%)
Of course the way the algorithm at CalPreps works is that it figures past game scores into the mix......thus the 55-7 win over a very bad Carlsbad team was figured in....and CalPreps doesn't know just how bad Carlsbad is this year. So there's that! CalPreps always gets more accurate as the season progresses.

Looking forward to the Home game tomorrow night, cause the next 2 games are a good ways on down the road, Belen & Deming. I'm expecting a good game, 38-31 don't sound too bad Crispy. I like what mikevicksdog said, great name by the way lol. I think it comes down to who executes better tomorrow night. Bulldog Bowl gotta count for something too, old friend of mine once told me Bulldogs playing at home is at least good for an extra 7 points. So 31-31 +7 for being the home team. 38-31 Mikemoe said both Albq Journal sports reporters both picked Artesia, I kind of wish they didn't, Kiss of Death ha ha

Dogs win 42-6.
We looked very good out there, didn't expect us to run away with it. Good Job all the way around offense and defense.
The Hobbs Qb look like he was from Carlsbad, just not as polished throwing the ball, if he was more accurate they might have been able to hang in there more.
What else can you say, Bulldogs looking very sharp and it's early in the season. Keep it going on the road next 2 weeks.

Very happy with the outcome. Hobbs had a lot of turnovers and penalties that really hurt them. Galindo sure stepped up! Hopefully Leroch comes back next week and is okay. That duo will be hard for anybody to stop out of the backfield. Estrada looked good, another INT in the end zone. Defense was lights out. Gave up a couple big plays but I think that was more so the fact that Hobbs has such great speed. Secondary came away with a lot of picks for the second week in a row. Excited to see what next week brings.

Upset last night? maybe
Carlsbad 27-19 over Goddard. Obviously Cale Sanders very familiar with Goddard but still had Goddard pegged to win that game.
Got my eye on Cleveland 27-7 over La Cueva. Good win for them, they will be our next home game in 3 weeks.

Another impressive win! Dogs are firing on all cylinders early in. I figured Hobbs was going to be a little more of a challenge than Carlsbad. I knew their win last week didn’t tell their story as Clovis has really declined over the past dozen years or so. Keep humble and never underestimate your next opponent

Keep humble and never underestimate your next opponent My coworker was a coach at Clovis, the successor to roanhaus, Cal Fullerton, was forced to resign and all of the assistants and other coaches who came up under him quit or left as well. In case anyone was wondering. Theyll probably never be good again.
