2023 Artesia-Roswell Game History Artesia and Roswell renew the oldest football rivalry in New Mexico which dates back to 1909. This year, the old opponents are the #1 and #2 ranked teams according to MaxPreps regardless of classification. The two teams have played at least 123 games against each other and have played every year football has been played in New Mexico. Three other early era games appear to have been played, but no score or game stories could be found. Artesia and Roswell had been district opponents for 16 years prior to 2000. The last 23 seasons the teams have been district foes with the Bulldogs having a 19-3 record against the Coyotes. Since 1909, only two of the games played have been playoff games, the Bulldogs won a 2006 quarter final game 55-13 and lost a 2018 semi final game 48-42. Artesia's longest win streak is 19 games from 2001-2018. Roswell has won seven State Championships in football: 1953, 1955, 1987, 1988, 2000, 2018 and 2019. Before 1950, the Bulldogs won only five games against the Coyotes, but have won 45 games since 1950. (1909-1949) Artesia 5 wins, 42 losses, 1 tie; (1950-2022) Artesia 45 wins, 30 losses. Overall Record Artesia: 50 wins, 72 losses, 1 tie

Magnificent matchup: Artesia and Roswell — two unbeaten powerhouses — meet in Wool Bowl on Friday By James Yodice Albq Journal
Next on the docket, one of the season’s most hotly anticipated games: the colossal matchup at the Wool Bowl on Friday night between 5A’s top two, Artesia and Roswell.
Roswell coach Jeff Lynn threw this out to me the other day: He believes 8,000 to 10,000 will converge on the venerable venue in Roswell on Friday night.
“I think there are several weeks when your kids seem a little more focused than other weeks,” Artesia coach Jeremy Maupin said. He didn’t have to say more than this.
Yes, it counts only one. This is a district game, same as the ones against Goddard and Mayfield.
But this clearly is a different “one” than the others. Everyone can agree on this. And everyone’s embracing that reality along the 40-mile corridor of US 285 that separates Roswell from Artesia. Regular-season games like this one don’t come around all that often.
“The history with Artesia and the history with coach Maupin and I, it’s a little bit bigger of a game,” said Lynn. His Coyotes, like Maupin’s Bulldogs, are 7-0. “It’s a big game, and we’re not gonna run from that. This is why you coach.”
The MaxPreps.com rankings have Artesia and Roswell ranked 1 and 2 overall. Ahead of all the top 6A contenders, such as Cleveland, Centennial and La Cueva.
And these two know each other about as well as any two rivals.
Their schedules have been demanding. Roswell beat five 6A teams in a row this season and routed every one of them. Plus commanding victories over 4A power Lovington and 5A’s highly regarded Piedra Vista.
Artesia has beaten a trio of 6A teams, including Cleveland 36-34 in mid-September.
In perhaps no other football division in New Mexico have two teams so completely and utterly separated themselves from the field of challengers as Artesia and Roswell have done in 5A.
These are are not just the two best offenses in 5A, but probably the two top defenses in 5A.
“This is probably as good an Artesia defense I’ve seen since I’ve been here,” Lynn said.
The two teams have each won their seven games by an average of 37 points. How’s that for symmetry?
Nye Estrada of Artesia and Manny Fuentez of Roswell are two of the state’s elite quarterbacks; Lynn says these are probably the two best QBs in the state in this game. (Estrada will throw it a bit more than Fuentez on Friday.)
“They’re a solid group,” Maupin said of Roswell.
By the time Friday gets here, both teams will have gone 14 days since their last game. This one, they all realize, won’t be like the rest.
“They know what this game is about,” Lynn said. “They’ve been around the block.”
The line to get into Wool Bowl on Friday might be around the block, too.
HEAVY HEARTS: While many prep football fans have heard about Bulldog Bowl and understand its place as arguably New Mexico’s most famous football venue, most people don’t know that the field inside Artesia’s stadium is called Mack Chase Field.
Mack Chase died on Oct. 2. He was 92. His funeral was Friday, on Artesia’s bye week, which is perhaps how he would have wanted it, a service that didn’t overlap with his beloved Bulldogs. Fittingly, and properly, his funeral was held at Bulldog Bowl.
His white No. 36 jersey hung in his private box at Bulldog Bowl, where he sat “every game,” Maupin said.
A former player for Artesia, his contributions to the town and specifically the football program are legendary in Eddy County. He grew up without much money, Maupin said; later, he earned riches in the region’s oil industry.
Chase’s foundation, when Maupin was in school, gave two full-ride scholarships to a boy and girl from Artesia High School every year.
“After I graduated,” Maupin said, “he upped that to every single senior.”
Quite literally hundreds of Artesia graduates had assistance and support from Chase.
“There’s not a person who’s ever played at Artesia that Mack Chase hasn’t impacted,” Maupin said, admiringly.
“He gave a ton of financial support and love to this community,” Maupin added, “and we’re a better community because of Mack Chase for sure. He’ll be greatly missed.”

Not many comments but highly anticipated regular season game, I can't remember a regular season game with this much attention in some time. A lot of it is us and Roswell being the top 2 teams in the state on Maxpreps. I believe District Crown, #1 seed is most likely going to the winner. Wouldn't be the end of the world for either one of us to lose. I think most of us see this matchup again in the state title game. Which if that happens Roswell would owe Artesia. Expecting a good game, hopefully got a good crew to officiate the game. Yeah still salty about 2021

Ever since Jeff Lynn took over the program in Roswell the uptake in playing and drive has been great for Roswell high. Once they got that taste back of success in their mouth it has been all about the coyotes in roswell again. We have to remember for the better part of two decades the coyotes didn’t really have huge success. Some play off appearances where they had some wins before getting put out. It was only a matter of time before someone like Lynn could bring in a winning tradition. Does this game worry me you bet it does. But it also has me excited to see what the Bulldogs can do because after finally getting that Cleveland monkey off our back it will be ours to loose. So come Friday night I see lots of fans going to roswell to eat dinner and check out a great game. Hopefully without injury to either team. Going over the season to start out I had this in my head as a title game. This area is what championships go through most years. It’s rare to get them up north but it happens time to time. This year bulldogs are loaded with talent and some size. Roswell is too. So no one have expectations it’s gonna be a shoot out of sorts. My piece said. Being on the haters!!! Lol

Wow! That’s all I can say! We got out coached and out played. Our offensive side of the ball was not prepared at all.

Two weeks off hurt us bad. I wonder how many missed wide open receivers and dropped passes we had? Roswell has a good team. I hope we can play them for state in the Bowl.

29-8 Final.
Seem like what could go wrong did go wrong. Opening kickoff blasted off our guy and right back to Roswell, it was that kind of night.
Didn't get many calls, but we got outplayed too. We got punched in the face.
I'm confident we will bounce back and meet them again down the road. As bad as we played, a catch here, haul in an INT there, we could have been in it. Just need to be prepared for their physicality next time, they had us a little spooked on offense.

I agree. I feel like the opening kick off was a huge part of tonight simply with the tone being set. Of course credit to Roswell, but from the jump they were playing with a little house money and it’s easier to play and play call in those situations. We had that same advantage last year. We seemed scrambled on both sides of the ball, which makes only giving up 22 points kinda impressive. Offensively, tonight exposed what I have felt all year. I’ve never seen an Artesia team this good be so inconsistent against man free looks and I don’t feel we are aggressive enough inside the 15. Do we still run the out route?

This kid said it well they wanted to come in and be physical they were, feel they got us off the hitch on offense with the WR and just disrupted timing and disrupted us when we needed to make a tough catch.
I'm always the optimist, you can learn more from a loss than a win. I think we will.

We got our butts kicked in all 3 phases of the game!! Every weakness we have showed up tonight. We did a million things wrong, and there is enough blame to go around for everyone. But as I said at the beginning of the season, the coaches have their work cut out for them. I’ve never seen any team be able to man up Artesia receivers like Roswell did tonight. Slots locked down by linebackers is unheard of. So many 2024 athletes moved away (Greathouse, Kennard, Bogle); No one could see that coming. But that has now left our best athletes as defensive backs. I understand “next man up” for the receiver positions, but these are big shoes to fill for underclassmen. Like I said at the beginning of the year slots have no experience; one looks to be a potential star (next year), one has played quarterback his whole life, and the other has more drops than catches 7 games into the season- literally. Reliable hands are an ongoing problem, route running has not improved at all (I can’t believe an Artesia team hasn’t even perfected the “out” route). And our effort to go get the football in the air is very disappointing. In the grand scheme of things, I’m not sure how good of Quarterback Nye is compared to other Artesia greats, but most balls he throws are pretty dang close to the intended receiver and yet we haven’t won a challenged ball yet (all season). Why are we not going at getting the ball in the air (Like Roswell did on their first TD)? This isn’t Tom Brady throwing the ball, it’s not always going to drop perfectly in your hands undefended. Defense played good enough to win, but definitely need to improve there as well. They kept us off balance all night. Fortunately we got some big turnovers and they had a few penalties on offense. Roswell won the special teams battle tonight as well…

And one more thing, that I mentioned in the summer. Probably wasn’t a good idea to play Roswell 6 times in 7v7. Especially since they don’t even run their offense for that. It’s literally just to see what we do as much as possible.
I guess the good news is, according to the ol’ saying….. Never change a winning plan, Always change a losing one!! In the state championship, Roswell would be crazy to change anything- and we would be nuts to not completely change the game plan! Maybe advantage us??
