2023 Roswell-Artesia State Championship History

Artesia High School is believed to have played its first football game ever Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1909 against Roswell High School in
Artesia. Exactly 114 years later, Artesia and Roswell will play their first State Championship game against each other at Bulldog Bowl. This
will be only the third playoff game between the two teams. 2006 Quarterfinals: Artesia won 55-13 at Bulldog Bowl, 2018 Semifinals:
Roswell won 48-42 at Wool Bowl (Roswell won the State Championship).

The Artesia Bulldogs are making their third straight appearance and Head Coach Jeremy Maupin is making his fifth straight appearance in the 5A
State Championship game. Coach Maupin's first two state games in 2018 and 2019 were as head coach of Los Lunas against Roswell. Los Lunas lost
both games, 42-6 and 25-19.

The Roswell Coyotes enter the game at 12-0 having defeated Lovington (45-18), Santa Fe (58-6), Hobbs (34-6), Los Lunas (34-7), Carlsbad
(41-7), Clovis (49-0), Piedra Vista (44-0), Artesia (29-8), Mayfield (48-15), Goddard (38-6), Quarterfinals: Mayfield (50-0) and Semifinals:
Deming (45-0).

Roswell Playoff Record: 39 wins, 19 losses (11 State Championship appearances and 7 State Championships: 1953, 1955, 1987, 1988, 2000,
2018, 2019)

The Artesia Bulldogs are playing in their 38th State Championship game and are playing at home for the 22nd time. This is the first time in six
years a State Championship game will be played in Artesia, the Bulldogs defeated Belen 48-14 in that game. The Bulldogs won their 101st playoff
game in defeating Piedra Vista in the semifinal game 50-0.

I know they did to the last 2 games but I haven't heard on the state game yet. Judging by past history NFHS will keep the rights for the state game. I will post that info once it's known.

We can win this game! I’m sure our coaches & kids will be in the right mind set. I’ve mentioned all season, my concern on offense - but all that’s over. I’m sure everyone knows their roll…. They’ll just have to play their best game on Saturday, and step up and make plays!
Defense also has their work cut out for them. They did a great job limiting points last time, but there is definitely room for improvement. We gave up a ton of yardage. I know ALOT of the old timers HATE the 3 man front we’ve been running. And I do think stopping the run has to be the top priority, for us to win. We’ll probably have to take some chances. Commit to stopping the run in run situations and play coverage in pass situations. But if we continue to play a balanced defense trying to defend both, they will have the numbers and are good enough to be successful in both areas.

I am an old timer who believes you can stop the run with a 3-4 D. 3 guys up front have to not go heads up and get in gaps and cause chaos. 4 LB'ers must protect edge and pursuit to ball. Secondary must have Safties who come up fast and hard.

Roswell runs alot of play action pass plays, our safeties have to stay back and play pass first or the same thing will happen with Roswell s first long td pass in the first game this year. We will have to stop the run with 7. The corners and safeties have to have a pass 1st mentality or Roswell s receiver s will thrive.

Noondog what do uncovered linemen do on play action? If they fire out it will be run. If they drop back pass. Key on uncovered linemen

I have a feeling Roswell will be overconfident. We need to get them in more passing situations to force some turnovers. They threw a pick 6 last game. Also we need to get more creative in the Red zone. There was an opportunity for 4 TDs but couldn't convert. Estrada either needs get rid of the ball faster or tuck it and run. He's 50/50 when he's scrambling and throwing. It's either a bust or big play. I'm leaning towards the former against Roswell. Need to get Galindo more involved in the pass game as well. Spread the field and wear out the coyotes defense. I realize this is all easier said than done, but it boils down to a few things the dogs need to fix/change.

Yep that was the key that Coach Dickerson taught us to fo as safeties, but when you forget and peek into the backfield, you get yourself into trouble.

I agree. Stop the run and take your chances vs the pass. Roswell definitely fast defensively. Couldn’t believe they were able to man up our slots with LB’s last time. I feel like a lot of that has to do with routes that have disappeared in the Artesia offense over the last few years. Haven’t seen a “drag” in awhile. The “hair pin” hasn’t been ran since Rex left. Nor has “Tunnel” on the trips side, where you can get the ball to a (Slot or RB) in space. I think (this group) Roswell has focused on the few routes we have stuck with, and are hoping not to have to defend our entire arsenal anymore.
